I remember being so angry when I read Just Mercy. It's crazy that this is still happening in our country. The nerve of us to expect justice from our justice system. Good grief!
I really enjoyed Just Mercy. It's definitely heartbreaking. We discuss the Innocence Project in my Forensics class. I may look into the YA version to share with my students. I also DNF'd The Push. It was just repulsive to me. I like kids well enough and didn't have shingles when listening to the audio. So, I feel you are absolutely justified! Glad you are on the mend from shingles!
Awe dang lol the push is one of my favorite books 😂😂 It gave very much bad seed energy which is one of my favorite old time movies so that’s why it worked for me but I so get the critiques
I geared up just hearing you talk about the Just Mercy & remembering watching the movie which made me sob. Kudos to the people who are day in and day out fighting the injustices that are our “justice” system. I agree that it’s a case by case situation, because some people really cannot be helped while others just had shit luck. Obviously I will never understand as a white woman. I’m glad that more people are talking about the people who get so disgustingly treated by our judicial & prison system.
Oh Jess! I cried with you during this journey. I hope that makes it better in some way. Glad you are feeling better and recovering from shingles. You also have convinced me that I should never give The Push a try. 🤣🤣
We're over two months into the shingles journey and I still have mid-level nerve pain days. Apparently it can last for months afterwards. The joys of being old :P I'm glad I'm not the only one who cried! And yeah The Push was not it.
I read Just Mercy and I feel the author was specifically speaking about the people he was trying to fight for as far as feeling the prison and justice system is broken but I totally agree it’s a case by case basis.
I appreciate you adding some clarifying thoughts on Just Mercy because your initial feelings felt like you were missing the point of the book. I don’t understand how anyone can read that book and not be emotionally impacted by the weight of the injustice in its pages, regardless of your feelings on the death penalty. I think this is why reading nonfiction is so important. It gives you knowledge you might never otherwise encounter in your own corner of the world and can slightly shift your worldview.
Yeah I've never felt like our prison system is the answer and I know I have a pretty cold feeling towards the truly bad people. But sometimes things just don't come out right when explaining. The way the book reads it's like Mr. Stevenson doesn't agree with incarceration for anyone because everyone can be rehabilitated and I just don't believe that. Sometimes evil is just evil. This is why I love non-fiction though! I just typically don't read it to rate for something like this.
