Battle of the Bulge - Northern shoulder December 20-24 - Kampfgruppe Peiper 

At 14:30 you state that "more than one hundred civilians were murdered in the garden of one of the Stavelot houses". This is obviously incorrect: the murders in the garden of the Legaye house cost the lives of 23 civilians. Also, though the bodies were discovered in the afternoon of the 22nd, the massacre took place on the 19th at 20.00hrs. I think you somehow mixed up this one massacre with the bodycount of the combined massacres, of which the killings in Parfondruy on the 19th (26 murdered civilians), the Legrand Farm (19th - 17 civilans) and Trois-Ponts (19th - 7 civilians) were the other main crimes.

My grandfather was in the 504th C company 82nd airborne and was wounded by shrapnel at Cheneux and was the end of the war fot him, he would never talk about it other than he lost many of his buddies and was a miracle he was one of the few that made it out, this is a great description of the battle compared to some I've seen and I've seen pretty much every documentary that exist of this battle,, great detail of the unit's involved in the fighting great work sir.

I just wanted to mention to, 'The AceDestroyer that the added footage, that I'm assuming you shot yourself, of the areas referred to in this documentary are a great asset for the viewer. Not only to give us a better idea of the battle areas in question but, also to give we viewers an idea of what it looks like today. You forgot one IMPORTANT American combat unit - at Rochelinval on January 7th 1944 - the Lost Battalion ( 551st Parachute Battalion ( the “Goya’s” ) temporarily attached to the 82nd Airborne ) won a bitter battle where 514 of 643 men were killed or wounded; including there outstanding commanding officer - Lt. Colonel Joerg. Within 30 days because of the casualties the 551st was disbanded and disappeared from the US Army history. On February 25th 2001 their bravery was finally acknowledged by receiving the Presidential Unit Citation - the highest honor that can be given by the US Army. My father 1st Lieutenant John “Milt” Hill was one of the few brave survivors. James K Hill

WOW! I've been to many of the locations you talk about. It is still astounding. The 101st and wind US Airborne fought tough against the overwhelming odds. But the bad weather Hitler wanted he got! But it slowed down Kampfgruppe Peiper. I'm glad you mentioned Hansen. Please do Clervaux next. Nobody covers that area of the Ardennes. If it fell on the first day, the battle may have turned out differently.

Great job!!! This film in combination with the Duel in the mist books gives a complete overview of the battle on the Northern shoulder. Living in the La Gleize area I consider myself lucky to have the Ardennes battle field in my back garden but it is films like this that can help you pinpoint the exact places. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for this! I went on a short trip here by chance a few days ago, and i had picked up a bit of history from the museum thats behind the King tiger 213 seen in this video. But your maps really put it all together for me. I suddenly realised i had been to these places and driven through them multiple times without realizing i was literally camping on a former Battle of the Bulge front line

AceDestroyer, is there a chance you could do a whole piece on Joachim Peiper please? Apart from his phenomenal war record I think people would be interested in his post war life and death, brave to the last.

I am currently re-reading A BLOOD DIMMED TIDE remembering one of my heroes Uncle Oscar with the 106th. He would hardly talk about it. He was wounded in the thigh and spent the remainder of the battle in wonderful Belgiun family's attick. Yet I am curious to see Baraque de Fraiture. Thank you for all your hard work. Someone should think about a movie about Erick Fisher Wood.

To great books on the 551st: “Messenger of The Lost Battalion by Gregory Orfalea ( he also has a cool You Tube video ) and “Left Corner of My Heart” by Dan Morgan. Americans like us need to never forget those who fought and died to keep us safe....

This German army was a shadow of it's former self. All the best and most experienced were dead or holding the Red Army back. A few experienced officers with new recruits and even kids. It's not surprising there were going to be innocent civilians murdered. As German cities burned. They should have never been sent on such a suicidal attack. Relying on captured fuel dumps to keep their untrained tank crews moving. Good docu though.

Very special kind of history and your take was right on. For the future, try to take your location shots at the same time of the year that the events occurred. Show the location today, in the good weather and then cut to photos of the locations in the winter. Just a thought.

Outstanding maps

My Pop Pop was with the 120th Company G 30th Inf. Fought along the Ambleve and received his first Silver Star on Christmas Eve in Parfondruy. He spoke of the massacre that happened there. He said the fighting in Thirmont shortly after was incredible intense.

According to Mark felton, the king tigers 221 and 213 scored several hits against the shermans and killed more than one tank before the remaining of the 15 shermans damaged both panzers.

Please don’t forget my father’s 551st Parachute Battalion ( attached to the 82nd Airborne ) courage and loss on January 7th 1945 at Rochelinval Belgium in the last Battle of the Bulge effort. Only 110 members of the original 684 Battalion walked away…

Only thing which stopped this attack was the lack of gasoline :/ If germans could get that gasoline fast enough, they would have driven allies back to the normandy.

Basically, I do not believe that I can form an opinion about this war without having understood the First World War and its consequences. The Treaty of Versailles and its inhumane exploitation of the French Still unparalleled today!

Not correct with the massacre , and not correct with the retried of Piper. Piper run out of gasoline, amo and food was plenty left. When Patton approached Piper to surrende, surrender is not an option and they can hold of the Americans quiet some time. The Waffen SS was furious with Hitlers failure in the Ardenne and just a half day away from the Coast they knew the war is lost. Piper told Patton they have some unfinished business with the Russians which will reach the Secret Weapon manufacturing in middle East of Germany if they can’t stop the advance in Hungary. Piper was allowed to negotiate (approved from the SS, not Hitler) to offer to keep the tanks back and full functional but he can retried with all of his men , around 1,100, and cross the river Rhein to attack the Russians in Hungary . The SS will stop fighting against Patton and hold of the Russians so Patton can reach the side of the Wunderwaffen before the Russian arrive. This was done, Piper left with his 1.SS Panzer(without Panzer) and got equipped with new Panzer to stay in February 1945 operation Spring Awaking three Russian guard devisions and hold them off for Patton to get hands on the secret weapons. My father was there and he got wounded in March 1945 fighting with his panther against Russian tanks, taking out 11 T 34 in 15 minutes and two IS II . An third one was his end and hit his panther in the side. He survived he war and worked with the US after the war to equip and train an German Division at Flensburg und US Flag…..non of this is very well known and Patton had have an freaky accident…..however, Dad was there and the rest is bad history ….
