A DALES HIGH WAY is a trail that travels 90 miles through the North Yorkshire Dales starting in Saltaire and finishing in Appleby in Westmoreland. Whilst the Dales Way travels about 80 miles stating in Illkley and finishing near the shores of Lake Windermere. In this video we provide a lot more detail to help you choose which trail to follow and to help you succeed in the successful completion.

Great timing! I have been eyeing up both as the starting points are in my back yard. The Highway is trumping it so far due to the moorland (my happy place) and the fact that you pass The Angel at Hetton (it's a right treat!). Thanks Nigel 😊

Not having a car, we've relied on those buses between Bowness and Windermere quite a lot. They're fairly frequent in our experience - definitely possible to factor them in. Thanks for a really interesting comparison video.

Yes a combination of the two hikes would be a good choice, but either are enjoyable. Thanks for watching and I appreciate you sharing your experience. Cheers

Having walked both of these trails, I much preferred the Dales High Way, which I think has more variety of scenery (especially over the first 4 days). I would easily walk the Dales High Way again, but would be very reluctant to walk the Dales Way a second time. Also, ending in Bowness on the Dales Way gave me crowd-shock coming out of the countryside into a densely populated area - not the way I like to end a long distance walk. A small point, but the Dales High Way doesn't actually go through Ilkley, but across nearby Ilkley moor. Overall gut-feeling ratings: Dales Way 5/10, Dales High Way 8/10.

Thanks Ryk for sharing your thoughts. Must admit, I can’t quite understand why Dales Way is so popular in comparison to Dales High Way. I don’t understand why the Dales Way turns into Cumbria, it’s not a great part of the Lakes. Hopefully, the review and the videos of the Dales High Way will provide more of a choice to those considering the Dales Way. Thanks for your comments really appreciate you sharing your experience. Cheers, Nigel

It certainly seems easier to start the Dales Way in the Lake District, from a transport perspective, at least for me. Two trains, via Manchester Piccadilly, instead of four (or three and a final bus journey from Leeds to Ilkley), and that would need to include a stay overnight in Leeds, when starting at Ilkley.

Yep, totally understand. And interestingly, this info not always well published re the particular trail. Agree, if I was to do the Dales Way again, I would certainly start at WIndermere. Appreciate the comment and thought. Cheers

There are trains that run from Leeds to Ilkley every 30 mins - the bus takes a absolute age... (I'm a local!)

After doing (some) of the Welsh Costal Path, starting at Aberystwyth & Carrying on to the Pembrokeshire Costal Path to Milford Haven. I'm now doing The Dales Way, From Winderemere. I have to say I'm finding it a much more pleasant experience, I think the scenery is far more interesting than the coastal path, gentler on the knees as well! But some of the stiles, wow, lethal! and easy to miss when the steps are built into the actual wall, perfectly disguised.

@AmblingTrails Год назад
Yes, those stiles are certainly a challenge at times. Feels like you're having quite an adventure, from coastal path to the fells. Definitely, think you're doing the Dales Way the right way round. Enjoy!

From a dog walkers perspective, is either or both trails dog friendly, not wanting to try to pick up a 40 kilo Boxer dog over styles Nigel?
@AmblingTrails
@AmblingTrails Год назад
Hi Peter, most of the styles are the slit kind in the walls or the stone steps sticking out of the walls with little gates on top. There are some wooden ones but not to many. This description applies equally to both trails. In each of the specific videos for each trail, I do show examples of the styles and gates that I come across, hopefully that would help as well. However, what you have done with this question is sparked the thought that I should add another chapter to my trail reviews ‘how dog friendly is the trail’ so thanks for asking and commenting. Nigel
