I started VAN LIFE because i was tired of the day to day routine of doing the same thing, same job, same drive to work, same mornings, same nights...everything was the same day after day. Van Life has been just an awesome experience since day one. This full time for me. I am in this for the long haul. I Love Van life. Its been the best choice i have ever made. I started Van life with my English bulldog names Disco. He is my hommie and my heater lol. I Built my van build is simple to show everyone that you can start Van Life with just the basics and build your van as you go. That you don't need a big fancy build to get started. VAN LIFE is closer then you think. just grab the basics you need and get started. You will figure out what you need after you are in the van. I don't have solar or battery banks, a sink or an electric fridge. I didn't need that stuff to get started. I am sure in the future at some point when i feel the need for those things i will get them. But so far i have everything i need without all the fuss and stress of Solar panel, deep cycle batteries, and a full van build. One day maybe but right now i feel at home in my van with everything i need.
I have dedicated my life right now to doing youtube full-time, i have fallen in love with the creative aspect of filming and editing. I am still learning and and grinding to make this a full time gig for me. I would love to earn enough through youtube and Patreon to be able to travel and film for you and the world everyday. To share my journeys from my prospective and to inspire and uplift my viewers to be themselves and life the life they want. To be who they are truly meant to be. YOU.
Thank you for being here on this great Van Life adventure with me.

Makes sense that the Mr Buddy heats much faster... 9,000 BTU's on HI compared to 3,000 BTU's on the Wave 3. Great review/discussion... thanks!

Chrome, you're all hearts, so generous! You could have kept the Mr. Buddy for a quick blast of heat in the cold mornings, but you chose to give it away to help someone else in need. Bless your heart!

The buddy heater is the only heater that will make it out in my ice shanty. You can also heat food up on it to by putting a pan handle under the buddy handle. That puts the bottom of the pan right over the top of the burner.

I have had the Big Buddy for I don't know how many years. Probably run 25 - 30 20lbs tanks through it. It still works great.

Yeah, I ran into the same overheat issue with the Mr. Buddy. What I would do is keep the front windows open a little and then turn on my roof vent fan. That seemed to regulate the heat pretty well. It also seemed to keep the moisture from gathering. I'm sure it made it safer also since you have so much fresh air coming in. That said, it seemed like a lot of wasted heat. It would be nice if it had a lower setting. Even nicer if the thing would just turn itself on and off via a thermostat.

I’m glad you took the blame for your Mr. Heater propane heater. I have several Big Buddy stoves, and I’ve put them through pure hell. The “build quality” of the Big Buddy is awesome, and I’ve been using the same one for eight years.

That was really useful. I already have already owned a Mr Heater for about 5 years. The trouble is I am a trucker with a condo all to myself - a high roof situation. I have an 07 Freightliner Century ex fleet truck and it was ordered with virtually zero insulation. The end result ( demonstrated last night) is that the combination of high roof and piss poor insulation makes it damn difficult to heat or cool. The Mr Heater on HIGH isn't enough. AND YET!! It isn't always freezing cold. Sometimes you just want to warm it up a bit and what you said about the Mr Heater is absolutely true. That bad boy will fry you! So my solution is going to be an additional Wave heater but not a 3. I think I need a 6 or even 8. I can always turn it down. For really cold situations I can get a T and run them both.

Thanks for the review, I love how you don't bash on either one and how you are fair and honest about your experience with both. Have a great day both you and disco. P.S. I'd like to get in on the heater give away, I've always got my notification on because your videos are very entertaining and informative, they're helping me by putting my mind at ease by showing me that the van life is a possibility for me. Have a good one.

as a person who has lived in Trailers and Rv's for decades I've had almost every type of thing to use.... out of the two heaters the "Olympian Wave" brand are much better than "Buddy" but neither are great.. the best is "Propex". it needs battery to run the fan but it is 10 times better than "Buddy" or Olympian Wave". it uses less propane, it keeps the temperature you like constantly and does not have any of the propane fumes in your 'home' it sucks air from outside to burn propane and blows the fumes out too..

I have used a Big Buddy heater in my living room for the past 5 or 6 years. I use it with a 20lb tank and use the medium setting, 9000 BTU's. My house is 120 years old & air gets in through the windows & doors, so there is some air flow. Makes it so my oil burner doesn't run so much in evening when watching TV.

Ive been using the Buddy heater for 8 yrs now, I just got a Wave 3, I like that I can control the heat better with the Wave 3. The buddy heats up fast but the Wave 3 keeps me warm without having to jump up every 10 mins to turn it off then back on 20 mins later. My first Buddy lasted 5 yrs, the 2nd one is going on 3 yrs. My teeny tiny van was too small for the Buddy, they do have problems, I use the hose that doesnt need a filter. Both great products.

I use my mr heater in my 28' airstream constantly in the winter and it gets cold in north wisconsin. I average one 20 lb tank every three- four days when its -17 below zero. Ive had mine for 6 years with no problems however i have had to clean out the jets inside the unit on a few occasions.

Great review, Chrome, been watching your videos for a few years now. You forgot to mention one more BIG difference between the two - Mr Buddy can run on one or 2 one lb. propane bottles. The Olympian requires a 20 lb. propane tank and the directions say NOT to put a 20lb propane tank in your van because it's not safe. Having said that I had a Big Buddy when my central air was inop and 0 degrees outside one winter. I put it in my small living room and got a headache from the fumes. Returned it back to Walmart and got another one thinking it was a factory defect but the same thing happened with the other one. So I stopped using it until I could afford to get my central heating unit replaced.

I’ve had mine close to 20 years as well! It’s the black one. Mine has the oxygen sensor in it. I use it every winter for ice fishing. The old ones are built better for sure but I’ve always thought they could be built better. I ran mine off a 20lb tank for a long time while hearing the tent for hunting. I’ve only had to clean the lines once. I have never used a filter. I must have got lucky lol. Love my Mr Heater. Think of all those old ones that probably got thrown away because people didn’t know how or were too lazy to clean the lines 😔 😢

I have to tell you with all due respect my man, I have had a buddy heater for close to 9 years now. I originally bought it for use in a coachman E series camper van with a high top I owned and used during the hunting season here in Ohio. As you point out it is very efficient at creating fast and plentiful heat and served quite well in that old high top van. I did this for about 3 years. Time has moved on now and I have now started New van project which I now intend on using the the Olympian in. Not because of any problems with buddy unit, I now use it in my 18' x 26' garage with an 8' ceiling and maintain a temperature of about 70 on a daily routine. It runs about 80hrs. on a 20lb tank in it's low setting and been doing that now for 6yrs. I do value your opinion and truly hope the Olympian will preform as well as my buddy.(I am choosing the Olympian this time based on opinions of others and size)

Make sure you cover the Olymbian Wave 3. Dust kills the platinum. Also, it's designed to be used all night. Crack the windows open by half an inch, keep the area round it clear, and set the temp. you want. Mr. Buddy heats too quickly, which can cause you to turn it off and on, so not good for keeping it on overnight. Also it causes major condensation and mold.
@casagrande31
@casagrande31 5 лет назад
That was a pod review. We have used the Buddy in our 20 ft trailer for 2 seasons. Warm it up night and again in the morning. I see no need to run almost any heater all night in a van unless your way north and in cold cold weathers. Ours produces no fumes. As for condensation, crack a window a very little bit.

We have a Mr Heater and I got it at a estate auction for $20. We have a decent size garage about 20x30. Idk the exact dimensions but its around there. I use that heater on low under the Trucks, cars, or even out in the open but on high. Its been a hell of a good heater and i use it on one of the little Camp propane bottles. I give it a 10 out of 10 for the price, even though i didn't get it at retail price. But either way id pay the full price again if something ever happened to it. Its been running strong for 2 years to.

Exactly....or just use your stove top with a foil done over the burners for quick heat and the camco after 5 minutes. Just use a carbon monoxide alarm to be safe. People cook with their burners on all the time for long periods of time so burners are safe as long as you have a carbon monoxide tester

Man... Use em both. Buddy for quick heat and use for 15mins until the Wave 3 kicks in... If your doing winter sports the Wave 3 will also help dry out your clothes... My parents had a Wave 3 in a 30ft pull behind and even in neg degrees it kept the whole camper warm. - Just need to keep area vented and a carbon monoxide detector (or multiple) in the camper., especially if sleeping with it on.

I'm still collecting heat supplements and as a new owner of the mr buddy I turn off my propane tank let that run out then turn off the mr buddy. That way it burns off any heavy sediment so it font clog. It heats up fast. Now I have purchased my cubic mini stove the grizzly from Canada for my rv off grid buyout. I will save up for an Olympian as well. I need more solar as well. I'm in the cold northern state so its neat to test it. Nice video

The Mr. Buddy heater on amazon reads "4,000- to 9,000-BTU radiant heater for spaces up to 225 square feet." The Wave 3 is only 3000 BTU this is not an accurate comparison. Wave 6 has 6000 BTU and the Wave 8 8000 BTU. You would need to purchase a Wave 8 to even come close to the BTUs of the Mr. Buddy heater in the video. No wonder the Wave 3 can not warm the van as fast as Mr. Buddy it doesn't have anywhere near the BTUs!

I swear, I just wanted to jump on Amazon and buy one of each of these heaters. I didn't, of course, but I bet the sales of these items jumps after viewing this video. I literally felt as though you were talking directly to me. It's no wonder that you have so many subscribers so quickly. I have a Mr Buddy for ice fishing for the exact reasons that you covered. But, alas, I love your videos, and subscribed due to the way your videos make me feel. I've always been a bit weird, a doer, not following the lines, but always savoring my choices in life. It depends on what Your looking for Myself I like the Cabela's cooker/heater It has the Ceramic Catalyst but Its Not straight out of the box If want to use In a like a van It need modifications It burns too hot so have to take off the pressure regulator and valve and replace It with another valve and put a pressure regulator on the tank and Its Not tip over safe so It has to be mounted down and a cage has to be put around It.

Let me add to your research. I use a Chev. step van for beach, snow, and just hanging out when I'd like to get away. I bought and installed the Olympian wave three 18 inches from the floor on the side wall of my Van. And yes, my Van is studded, insulated, interior paneled, and electrified. I live in Southern Cal. so the coldest its been on one of my 'outings' has been about 44 Deg. F. (6.6 deg. C) The interior of my step van measures 6.5' wide x 6.5' high x 14' long for a total of 609 cubic feet inside. Here's what I've found, the Olympian wave 3 will only raise the interior temperature 17-19 deg. F. above the outside temperature. Yep, that's it. And thats with all windows and overhead vents blocked of with insulated material and a thick felt floor to ceiling barrier three separate baffles both for and aft spaced 3 to 6 inches apart for dead air space and additional insulation. The Olympian wave 3 works great for VW and other 'standard' vans but for step van or equal size your going to need 2 to 3 times the max. 3,000 btu capability of the Olympian wave 3 to keep warm. So you're looking at least a 4,000 to 9,000 and possible + btu output. Btw....yes, the Olympian wave 3 is very, very nice,.....just not enough for anything larger than a standard size van.

i bought one and after a year stopped working. I did everything by the book and i even kept it covered during the summer to protect it from dust etc. so since that one crocked, i went and got another one. it would work with small can but not with the hose so took it back , got another one. the other one worked with the hose but not with the can. After the 3rd trip Walmart wanted to give me one for "free" but i had enough of that. i need something reliable when it is cold outside. so still shopping around for something better quality. waves seem better made and not so many bad reviews about it.

Great review of both heaters Chrome! When it is cold, I have always looked for a company that lets me use shore power and use an electric space heater to run during the night. When it is -40C I rent a room. I plan on getting another heater so I don't need to plug in for heat. Also I have started looking at kerosene heaters and wonder if anyone learned anything about these. I always look forward to watching your videos Chrome! Thanks for all that you do to brighten everyones day!!!

I saw a wave3 mounted on a tv swivel arm inside a van was awesome because he could swing it back out of the way when not using, and out into the open when using. FYI

My electric portable heater was on QVC before the Christmas holiday season. I paid about $60 for it and it has two settings, plus one that doesn't throw heat , but shows the yule log burning. I usually use the low setting, unless it's unusually cold outside and windy, with drafts that come in through the framework of the windows. It's called an electric fireplace model and has 750 and 1500 watts. My bedroom is about twice the size in square footage as your van, so my heater would probably be very efficient in a van. I couldn't find a name on it, and don't know where I put the paperwork, but you could google electric portable fireplace model heater if you ever want to learn more about it. I know you don't need one but maybe in the future, as it is cheaper than yours and I've had this one going on three years and have no complaints. I do so enjoy your videos and hope you have a happy journey in your van.

Is that the only heat in your house ?
@patsycav
@patsycav 5 лет назад
@@davidelo5843 No. I use the gas heat from the furnace when I'm in the kitchen and living room during the day. I only use the portable heater in my room on extra cold nights when I don't need to use the gas heat in the rest of the house. I just close my bedroom door and keep the electric heater on low. It gets warm and I usually have to open the door in the early morning hours.

Celsius... the only thing I can remember is 0°C is water freezing & 100°C is how hot it takes it for water to boil, so when they say the Death Valley NP ranger station is 127°in July I know that better be in Fahrenheit. 🙄

I agree, if you need fast heat, the buddy heater, and the off brand of the same heater, will put out some heat. Installing on the door is a really bad idea. Ask me how I know! ! Ok, I'll tell you. The insides of the heater are fragile, as are the burners. Even if the heater just fall over, that shock is enough to cause damage, especially if a propane bottle is attached. I had the movable connection, between the bottle and the aluminum line that fed the propane to the heater crack. It was just a matter of time before the seal failed and I had a flame up. There are two vids that show heaters that also had fires, so NO, don't install on a door where the heater will be subject to vibration of slamming door. BAD BAD BAD idea. I don't recommend the buddy type heater being used without supervision because of the flame up possibilty because you don't know if the fragile aluminum is damaged inside or not.
