Can we all take a minute to appreciate how good the main Bomberman theme is? Yeah, it debuted back in the NES game, but it really came to life here with the addition of the second verse. I'd honestly argue it's up there with the main Mario, Zelda, Bubble Bobble and Tetris themes as one of the most iconic and timeless tunes in gaming.

Finally, the Amiga got a respectable port of a Japanese console game. And I seem to remember it came bundled with a serial adapter to allow 4 joysticks to be connected. But lots of love for Hudsonsoft from us Amiga owners. Both Bonk (BC Kid)! And Yo! Joe! were awesome too.

@iwanttocomplain
@iwanttocomplain 21 день назад
@@SimianScience today is all about Bomberman 94 for me. And let me tell you, Hudson gimped the smd port. I would say they were developed concurrently, giving minimal effort to the smd port, evidenced by the jerky moving static object on otherwise static screens. Slowing down with like 5 things happening is not good programming. But what is most obvious is in the colour. The PC Engine game is one of the nicest looking 16bit games I've ever seen. All the way through it's a feast for the eyes from stage 1's lovely leaves throughout. On the smd version you are met with pretty much just a single coloured brown for the first 20 minutes. You are killed cruelly on the second stage, unlike the PCE original. After 20 minutes you are onto white (snow - the most boring and challenging to make not look just white theme in gaming). Then at 35 minutes you are met with _some_ nice violet colours. Then green-brown, then white again for the rest of the game. That is gimping on an epic scale. Then there is the SNES port. Not giving them a version, they got a basic single screen game with bad music. Then a few months later they put Bomberman Panic Bomber W falling block game with far superior music. So they are gimping all the other versions of this game, other than the original Japanese only PCE version.
@iwanttocomplain
@iwanttocomplain 21 день назад
PS if you're reading this, Mark, I found out how to get low res smd games work at 1:1 pixel / 8:7 aspect. You get 'Gens/GS' and turn off 'Stretch' in the Graphics menu.

@@diskyboy1990 The c64 GS was just a scheme to get rid of some old commodore 64 motherboards they had in a warehouse and couldn't sell. The CDTV was just a massive boondoggle. They thought they could get in on multimedia long before anyone else but the public wasn't interested in or ready for it yet. As for the CD 32 it was actually a pretty solid success at launch but a patent dispute over blinking cursors held up the North American launch and by the time that was resolved commodore was out of money.

@iwanttocomplain
@iwanttocomplain 20 дней назад
@@TheDumontShow PCE ('87) has a cpu which is a 6502 8bit core, just like the snes ('90). The 16bit register (mode on snes) has no use. it has a 16bit graphics unit (I think!). But the bus speed of the PCE is likely 7.1MB/s as opposed to 2.5MB/s. The external bus was changed to 8bit (like the snes) at the last minute, halving the available vram and wram. So the bitness of the PCE is roughly equal to the snes, but the performance is like 3-4 times greater.

I've been way too excited waiting for this show. This game is the gold standard of Bomberman, the game that all future entries in the series need to live up to. my favorite is still the original PC Engine version, it still looks and sounds great now. Sharp X68000 comes in second, a near perfect port, but it looks a little stretched, don't you think? As for the western home computer ports, it would seem they were developed by a one off studio named Actionamics, this is the only game they've ever done. I'm guessing they were just the result of some collaboration between Hudson Soft and Ubisoft? Anyway, the Amiga port is great, I'd go as far as to say it's got one up on the PC Engine in the music department. MS-DOS is there, it does the job, but the Atari ST is comically bad. There's no reason it should look that much worse than the Amiga. It's almost like Commodore slipped Hudson and Ubisoft some fat checks with the agreement they'd purposely botch up the ST port. It would also seem an Atari LYNX port was in-development back in the day. It has the same Dyna Blaster name as the computer ports, and so far, only has it's title screen available online and it looks a bit rough have to say. I'm sure the LYNX could do this type of game well, in fact it can, Bombercats, a homebrew based on Bomberman, manages to fit as much on screen as the official ports while somehow not looking like complete turd. It always surprised me what the LYNX can do. I'd argue it's the only Atari system that is worth owning, as much as saying that might piss some off, but sorry, the 2600 is to put it bluntly, outdated, the 5200 was just bad, the 7800 had potential, and nowadays has a striving homebrew scene, but back in the day was a laughing joke compared to the Famicom or Master System, and the ST is just a worse Amiga, oh and the Jaguar, outside of Rayman, it's got nothing good. Never understood why there are so many passionate Jag fans who will defend the system like their life depends on it.

The PC Engine was designed in 1983-5 by HudsonSoft and spent a further 3+ years in development with NEC. Hudson designed the system themselves and it's well over 4 times the power of the snes. Among the European computer ports, which soundtrack do you prefer? The Amiga port's direct arrangements of the original tracks, or the Atari ST's new tracks? EDIT: I didn't expect you'd say the DOS port sounds better than the Atari ST. The DOS port's soundtrack still consists of arrangements of the PC Engine version, and it's MUCH worse off than the Amiga. Like, zero redeeming tracks here, and they don't even play in the right worlds. For example, World 1 uses Stage BGM2 instead of BGM1, and World 2 uses the latter. I never knew there was a ST version. Shame it's such a bad port, the ST could do way better.

The Sharp X68000 and the PC Engine versions are very good! As for the European versions, there is one port I had to choose. And that's the Amiga port! Even though it only uses one fire button, and space as another, it runs very smooth like in a console game! The MS DOS version is okay, but I might have to say that the Atari ST is the worst port, because I knew it was going to be a stinker over the Amiga! It's not completely the worst, but the jerky movement is a pain in the bootie.

The Playstation version was decent - the main reason to own a multitap IMO!
