It's not fair to compare PC Engine with Sega Master System. Master System was a older machine, and although both have 8 bit CPU, PC-Engine/Turbografx had far superior sound engine and 16 bit graphics processor. Even it was marketed at USA and Europe as a 16 bit machine. Also, Out Run for Master System was ported in 1987 just in the first years of the machine, and Out Run for PC-Engine was ported in 1990...

The procesor was 8 bit Zilog Z80, however the sound chip was a Yamaha 16 bit, the only one version of msx that had 16 bit instructions was the TurboR with the Z800 chip but it came in 1990, a few years later after the master system.

An "Arcade-perfect" port of this was a pipe dream back in those old times, although the PCE version was pretty neat. Still, the Mega Drive port was solid and playlable, same with C=64 port. Biggest let down has to be the Amiga port though.

I can remember when I bought Sega Ages on the Saturn on a bit of a whim from a secondhand shop back in the late 90's. The world (and I) had moved on to polygon racers by that time, but the first time I fired up Outrun and the realisation dawned on me that I finally owned a more-or-less arcdae perfect port of the game... well I was pretty blown away.

While I'm 100% sure that the Master System could do better, you have to acknowledge the fact that even though the PC Engine has an 8-bit CPU, it also possesses a 16-bit GPU. That's like if you stacked the Dreamcast against the likes of the 3DO, 32X, Saturn, or PlayStation because they all have 32-bit CPUs. Great video by the way!

this is true but the real downer is the the PC Engine version is smoother and plays better than the Mega Drive version. I'm a massive MD fan so it's sad to see something liek Out Run being better on a lesser system.

I love the Mega Drive/Genesis too, but I'd say I'm a bigger Saturn fan (if my username is anything to go by). I feel you though. Why is there lag in Sonic Jam? The Saturn should be more than capable of handling Genesis games. Oh, and my one major gripe with MD OutRun is the layout. I strongly prefer Overseas.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 10 лет назад
SaturnVDP1 I'm using the Japanese game so I'm guessing that's why the MD Out Run was the japanese layout or is the Genesis and Euro MD game like this as well? Saturn, my No.1 game console of all time and I own a lot of different consoles and games.

I'm currently play again Outrun 2006 with the fanmade patch FXT, which give the custom rumble of Xbox controller and force feedback wheels for arcade lovers on PC and some new features, a HD HUD is still in development.

The PC-Engine version is smoother than the one on Genesis, but it suffers from a problem that loads of the ports had -- it can't do the split roads right, either mid stage or on the branches. Genesis has more accurate track layouts than a lot of the other versions as a result (also, that flicker on the stage branches was always awful). It's actually fairly impressive on the Genesis for that reason, the arcade version had dedicated hardware to do that. I've got a pretty big soft spot for the Genesis version, even when I can fire up the arcade release or 3DS version at any time these days. It's a bit choppy, but it's just satisfying. Always liked the music more than on PCE too. could just be that the first time I reached all the endings was on Genesis, haha It's a damn shame you're running MD Outrun at 50hz, I can't think of any Sega developed game on the system that was actually 50hz optimized. It's a game that's already kind of choppy at 60hz, but now it's running only 5/6ths as fast. Bleh. but yeah, there's a fair few Sega arcade ports that are oddly better on PC-Engine (After Burner comes to mind immediately, and then Space Harrier got a solid port to PCE and didn't make it to the MD for whatever reason) like, I'm pretty sure that was a case of one hand not talking to the other when Sega's arcade division was giving out conversion licenses I really wish the PS2 version handled properly. Sega really botched all of the 3D Sega Ages remakes pretty bad. Like, I'm still mad about Virtua Racing, since it means that to this day that the best home version in terms of handling is still the 32X one. Kind of surprised they never went back to it and did an "OutRun Complete Collection" Sega Ages release like they did for Space Harrier, but I guess it doesn't matter at this point anymore.

That Amstrad CPC version is an embarrassment. If you look carefully in the footage you can even see points where it does not even look like the lines in the road are moving, parts where the road is suddenly offset compared to where it was and other moments where the other cars are off the road completely.

Boo! Wanted to edit and ended up deleting my comment :C Here it goes again: "Why would they do that?" I think if anyone from Sega's department answers that question, it would be like this: "It's OutRun, made by us, in the Dreamcast, made by Sega, which casually happens to be us, so we can do whatever we want with it" As for the licensing, sponsors and such, I think they're used to gather funds to develop games on third party consoles. That's why certain logos might get replaced on any other console ports. Just like the Daytona licensing issue in the 720p port of Daytona USA, but they got it back in the 360/PS3 port. Or like, the AMD logos in OutRun 2006. Why the MegaDrive version wasn't as much as good as AfterBurner 2's port on it escapes to my reasons, tho... PS: Whatever did Amiga consume back then, I want some too. WTF WITH THAT INTRO!?

Found this now ^^; As I said elsewhere, my favorite for "remembering the arcade" is the Sat version, but when it comes to spend hours on it and beat it to death I always go with PC Engine, the gameplay is really perfectly balanced for an home "I don't want to rip quarters out of your pockets" experience. From the look of it the PS2 version "seems" very playable, but I am one of those bothered by the polygon based graphics ^^; P.S And I have to say again there are no better "let's compare" videos on the net, excellent job!

I'll have to give the PCE version a little more time and go for all the endings to see just how it differes from the Saturn version.
@davereen5103

You will certainly have a blast doing so ^_^ As you know an accident would jeopardize the possibility of finishing the course (specially down the line, where you will need every single second) and hitting the breaks too much (thus losing many precious seconds) is not advisable either, but in the conceited last laps you some times find yourself in "high traffic" scenarios, often in the middle of a difficult series of turns, so what I like to do is to decelerate by just releasing the accelerator button (or by gently using the breaks) standing just a nose behind the car in front of me (while keep "racing", not losing much speed as I keep that car speed at least) correct my trajectory and blaze past it. Some other times during long turns as you drift toward the right or left, you can dodge cars thanks to very tight controls that allow you to calibrate your drift as to even pass between two cars without accidents or getting out of bounds. On the PCE I "feel" this kind of control (also quick "last second" corrections yield good results most of the time) while on the Sat (specially the Japanese 60FPS mode) I always end up flying in the sky o_O. My guess is that the Sat version is probably Arcade perfect and just as unforgiving (in the end losing there meant more money for the Arcade owner :D ) while NEC balanced the gameplay for a less frustrating "home" experience. My impression at least :)

Probe has done better than this. When watching the Amiga & ST versions in this video, I couldn't believe Probe had a thing to do with them. Subcontracting? That explains it. Their Amiga ports of Roadblasters & Super Monaco GP are actually decent- neither one has the arcade's smoothness, but they're playable. Their versions of T2: The Arcade Game on SNES, MD, & Amiga are good. On the MD version you get a soundtrack by Matt Furniss, which IMO is better than the arcade's. The HK boss & Cyberdyne Lab raid themes are epic.

I had the CPC game when I was young, on disk. It came with an audio cassette you could play at the same time that had all the music from the game on it - so instead of having it coming from the machine, it was arcade-perfect from your tape player. Of course, what actually happened is that the tape found its way into my parents' car so I could sit in the front seat and pretend I was in California ...

Regarding Amiga and Atari ports, this was the time when Amiga games were mostly direct Atari ports and Amiga ports suffered from this as Amiga's superior hardware was not put in use at all. Very sad as Amiga was capable of doing much better than this. It was just lazyass job made by the developers.

The PCE version might ran smoother. But the Coconut Beach surfer are missing. The Mega Drive version looks more like the arcade. In this case I'll stick with the Mega Drive. Plus although the music might not been original, it was decent. Way back then I played outrun a lot. Then I bought the Master System with that game. Boy was I disappointed. At least later they brought out a 3D version of that game. The car was smaller but the graphics where nicer. I preferred that. Even though the busier graphics made the whole game slower. More later the modern Outrun cam to the Xbox. With the original game hidden inside it. Good version. Besides, the there's a nice PSP version you want to check out.

Apparently, Sega and M2 are bringing over OutRun to the 3DS as the next entry in their 3D Remaster Project series which is great. I'm sure M2 will feature both Japan and Overseas tracks, and hopefully the odd billboard changes from the DC port won't be present either. The obvious question is the whether they'll use the Ferrari again, having been replaced by a stand-in car in that version. On the other hand, 3D After Burner II formally credited Northrop Gruman (who designed the F-14 Tomcat fighter) on its title screen.

PC Engine and Master System are indeed both 8-bit consoles, but it doesn't make them the same in sheer power. SMS is not nearly the same as PCE in that regard, not even close. PCE's CPU was variation of NES CPU, but on insane steroids (7 MHz vs 1,7 MHz and mighty features like internal bank switching, RAM regions movement, bit operations, and much more) and graphical capabilities were from completely different leagues. So it's not fair to compare them like that.

The 2015 remake is a PC version designed to look and play like a true CPC version as faifthully as possible. Now somebody needs to convert that so it works on an actual CPC. That would be awesome. Retro Core The biggest selling point for the 3DS version for me were the 2 new songs composed using the same arcade hardware sound front and the native 16:9 resolution. There is something just a tad off with the 60fps though, which is most noticeable if you compare it to the Saturn version.

The Genesis version is way better than the TG-16, the TG-16 sound is tinny and there is no digitized audio, no "Check Point" and "Congratulations" and where is the split in the road where you decide which path to take. The Colors are better on the Genesis even if the TG-16 has a slightly sharper image, I prefer the warmer colors over slightly sharper image with less warm colors. I think Out Run is The Best 16-Bit Console racing game, better than anything on SNES.

So the AGES PS2 series only has the 3D versions and no arcarde original port included? I think my brother bought the Alien Syndrome thinking he'll get a pixel perfect arcarde port with just a 3D version as a side thing. I believe he said it had only a 3D remake disappointed and sold it.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 8 лет назад
Yep, that's right. All you get is the 3D remake. The best way to play out run at home is on the Saturn. Arcade perfect plus a 60fps mode which is even smoother than the arcade machine. Also, the Japanese version has some fantastic remixed music as well as the original tracks.

@RetroCore
@RetroCore 9 лет назад
Jason Lee It could have been a lot better than it was. It all came down to memory size of the cartridges back then. It was expensive so a lot of games were cut back. The Mega Drive hardware is pretty good when you see what can be done with it when there's no limit on cartridge size.

The Pony Canyon version is a MSX2, although it barely uses the MSX2 enhanced features. The Probe version is a slower version of the ZX Spectrum port where the music starts over again everytime you crash into something.

Great comparisons here. I had this on the C64 and it was ugly as hell but pretty speedy. I thought the SID renditions could’ve been much better though. It seemed like the musician just went for something that could be easily ported across all of the European computer platforms. Beyond that, the Saturn version was clearly the best home offering. I liked the clean, vibrant approach of the MD game, but felt the PCE version was better. I actually laughed out loud at the music in the MS DOS version and for funny looks in the canteen at work where I’m watching this now! 😂 I know these are old, but if I may, my only gripe with this video was that you kept using the same tune in nearly all your playthroughs. Why not vary it up?
@RetroCore

Thank for watching, inphanta. The reason fir using the same tune was so people could compare them against each other. I guess if the clips of each version were mire tightly edited it may not have been so bad.

Please tell me you didn't just compare the PC Engine and Master System as the same class of system... are you kidding me? The PC Engine's CPU is 8 bit yes, but it's graphics processor is 16 bit and was actually more powerful than the Megadrive. Just compare the PC Engine CD games to the Genesis or Sega CD and you'll easily see this. It was obviously part of the 16 bit generation and meant to compete with the other 16 bit systems. You can't possibly expect a Master System port to keep up with the likes of the PC Engine...
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 6 лет назад
PC Engine is 8 bit. It was released before the Mega Drive too. Why its concidered a 16 bit system these days is a mystery. It was a very powerful 8 bit console. The MSX2 computer is also 8bit but can easily out do a Master System. No 16 bit gpu in that machine.
@skins4thewin
@skins4thewin 6 лет назад
The CPU is indeed 8 bit, but the reason it's considered to be 16 bit is because its Graphics chip is 16 bit. It is in a whole nother league compared to the Master System. Seems kind of strange to compare the two, as if they were on equal footing or something. While it did come first, the PC Engine was part of the same console generation as the SNES and Genesis. It's Graphics chip is very respectable, specially with the expanded RAM.

In defence of the game gear version. Although technically more powerful than a master system. It has a bigger color palette than even the Mega Drive. The resolution of the game gear is very low, so you either compromise like outrun and have less detail, or crop in heavily like Sonic 2 and have it completely unplayable. I had the game gear version of outrun and it was easily one of the most played games I had on it. It was a product of its time like all game gear games were, they are all unplayable now.

The Amiga version is nowhere near as good as it should ahve been. What we have is a very lazy port of the Atari ST version with some upgrade on the sound. The Amiga was more than capable of doing something close to the arcade if not a spot-on conversion. The Speccy version however makes the Amiga version look like a work of high art. Incredibly slow to the point of unplayable.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 10 лет назад
Most Amiga arcade ports are pethetic because they were made in short time periods by people who didn't have the skill most of the time. There are some amazing ports but most released by the likes of US Gold, Ocean or Elite are pretty awful IMO. The Amiga does have great games however most seem to be original titles.
@TheKayliedGamerChannel-YouTube
Retro Core Yeah, Amiga was a decent home computer for its time, with some great original games. Like you say for Arcade Quality 16bit games the newer 16bit consoles were more adept /powerful tools to work with :-) Even the old 8bit/16bit Hybrid Microscopic sized PC Engine HuCard version kills the home computer versions - lol

@RetroCore

Dude, the PC Engine has always been classed as an 8bit system even back in 1988. All magazines back then classed it as an 8bit system including those in Japan. Yes, it has a It had a 16 bit gpu, but just an 8 bit cpu. Please don't tell me that the 100s of magazine articles from back in the day were all wrong because the GPU was 16bit. The "bit wars" was based upon the CPU so in this case it is classed as an 8bit console. Anyway, the whole bit thing means nothing. Just look at the crap the Jaguar put out. that was 2x 32bit cpus. The Mega Drive and SFC were both 16bit but most would argue that the SFC / SNES was the most powerful system. The master System and NES were 8bit yet the Master System was far more powerful (It didn't have the games mind you)
@Mac3Media
@Mac3Media 7 лет назад
Retro Core it has a dual 8 bit cpu to push the 16 bit gpu...was designed like that to keep the architecture the same as the NES...was actually submitted to Nintendo to be the NES successor and was rejected...I'll say it again...its a 16 bit console...as far as a Master System...that thing is trash...and 90% of the games run in slow motion...I know I have 79 games for it
@armornick
@armornick 7 лет назад
A dual core 8-bit CPU is not the same as a 16-bit CPU. Your opinion on whether it was the superior console doesn't change the fact that it is classed as an 8-bit console. The fact that it is an 8-bit console doesn't automatically mean that it was worse than a 16-bit console either.
