For me the best thing about the Megadrive is the 3-button control scheme. Having a dedicated run button makes it so much easier to do the dash moves, and more fun for me

Yeah the run button actually really changes how I play the MD version, it’s quite nice how it gives that version a unique feel. You have to wonder considering the SNES has 3 more buttons available why they didn’t include it on there as well! 😅 In fairness you can turn on the option to manually dash but you have to double tap a direction for it which isn’t as good.

At a time when many arcade ports were significant downgrades, the SNES and Genesis versions of these games stood out as excellent versions with awesome sound and gameplay. Easily some of the best beat-em-ups of the era only rivaled (in my opinion) by Streets of Rage. I think Hyperstone Heist really utilizes the Genesis chip well and is one of the absolute best soundtracks on the system.

Even though the SFC version has less frames of animation and looks compromised from the arcade version, I preferred the SFC version because the gameplay mechanics seemed tighter in terms of being able to pull off the “throw enemy through the screen” and the “slam enemy back and forth” moves. The arcade version felt more unforgiving and felt like it was made to take more of your money. It was a special time for the SFC/SNES because we got Street Fighter II and this in what felt like a short timespan. Great times!

Turtles in Time is hands down truly the best TMNT game ever and one of the best beat em up along with Streets of Rage 2 and also one of the best video games about time travel along with Chrono Trigger. The soundtrack is just iconic and I really love how Konami did excellent job converting it to both SNES and Mega Drive. Despite not being arcade perfect, SNES port is pretty much better game than the Arcade version due to the port being much more balanced and the changes and new features make the overall game more interesting. Shredder sending the turtles back in time in Technodrome makes more sense than in sewer, at least in my opinion. Animations and voice samples being missing from SNES port can be expected. Konami did impressive job by having most of their SNES games on 8-megabit cartridges, yet larger SNES cartridge sizes weren't enough for Capcom. I'm definitely going to get Turtles in Time for my SNES. The only TMNT game I have is TMNT: Tournament Fighters for SNES. The Hyperstone Heist is very good TMNT game for Mega Drive and counterpart of Turtles in Time. I like the expanded intro featured in The Hyperstone Heist. I have heard rumors about The Hyperstone Heist originally being planned as a port of 1989 TMNT Arcade game, which might be reason why Baxter Stockman appears as human rather as a mutated fly, or a game based on 1990 TMNT movie, which could explain why Tatsu is one of the bosses. Maybe Konami decided to combine both of the planned game ideas with gameplay and story elements from Turtles in time in order to create unique TMNT game for Mega Drive. I find the altered unlockable version included in TMNT 3: Mutant Nightmare and the demake by Ubisoft just bland. Pizza Power is only positive thing from The Coming Out of Their Shells and truly deserved to be included in Turtles in Time. Yes, I have seen both Nostalgia Critic and AVGN's crossover review and Phelous' review of it.

Personally I'm only familiar with the Genesis and SNES ports, I haven't played the arcade original or the PS2/Xbox 360 ports of it. I definitely think the layout of the levels was much better in the SNES Turtles in Time than in Hyperstone Heist, where it seems like only half the effort was placed. I'm actually amazed at how close the SNES graphics matched the arcade, unless you look at them side by side the difference isn't that obvious. Unfortunately, the same can't be said of the Genesis, since the sparse color palette once again rears its ugly head. However, if there's one thing I like better about Hyperstone Heist, it's the music. The SNES port sounds more staccato, almost like it can't play as many notes at once, whereas the Genesis port is more faithful to the arcade but with even superior bass. It even has the orchestral hits, something Konami felt was too much for the Genesis port of Sunset Riders to handle. The PS2 port looks poorly optimized, it struggles to run at the arcade's framerate, and seems to have some forced interpolation blur that makes it look kinda dull, and to make it even more dull they added generic-sounding music. The Xbox 360 remake seems alright but it definitely has the look of a budget game, and once again they couldn't be bothered to use the arcade's soundtrack. Overall I'd say the SNES version is the one to get, but they're all a fun time.

I was just thinking about this game a few days ago. By the time Turtles in Time came out in arcades, I had lost interest in the Turtles. That's why I didn't play the game when I saw the cabinet at a movie theater when it was new. I played Sega's Spider-Man instead, as I found Marvel more appealing than TMNT by the end of 1991. I always did like that Sega game, and still do, so I have no regrets. I actually didn't like Turtles in Time arcade at first when I finally did play it. The auto run was initially very annoying. I also found the jump attacks irritating, as there are four different ones as I recall, which I thought was too much. But I did eventually come to like it after getting used to those things. And I prefer the arcade Neon Night Riders stage because it's action packed. The mode 7 on the SNES version is cool, but I don't like having a laid back bonus stage at that point in the game. I think it was a good call to include Hyperstone Heist. While it is a different game, it's clear that it uses SNES Turtles in Time as its starting point. I've extensively compared the arcade, SNES, and MD/Genesis versions, especially for the music. Regarding the music, I vastly prefer the FM sound on the MD, and it's really close in quality to the arcade. I saw that you really prefer the SNES music. Over the years, I've seen that it's a toss up as both versions have their fans. I don't dislike the SNES music, but the abrupt nature of the notes doesn't appeal to me as much. I do agree that the unique elements added to the SNES port more than make up for what is lost. It's funny that I didn't like auto running at first, but switched back to it on the SNES due to finding the double tap not as reliable as in other games. I really like the run button on the MD. It helps add to the faster pace. I've always loved the feel of the game play most in Hyperstone Heist and never really had issues other people had when it came to the stage layouts or length, but those are valid criticisms. A couple of other things worth mentioning. The MD version has more frames of animation in certain spots, but the SNES version counters by having more unique enemies. And some may be surprised, if they're not familiar with the arcade game, that the turtles are not very different, though they have significant differences in the home ports. Anyway, this was an especially fun episode. Thank you.

I can remember being in the 4th grade and my classmates would rave about how much fun the SNES version was but I didn't own the system at the time. Then one day I was reading either a gaming magazine or X-Men comic book that advertised about Hyperstone Heist so I immediately rented it when I saw it at the rental store over and over again beating it several times. The same thing happened with Sunset Riders lol. I grew up only playing the Genesis version and I didn't even know the game started in the Arcade until one day I saw that it was available in MAME which blew my mind. I'm just glad that Konami at the time showed the Genesis owners like me some love with the ports as well as bringing exclusives like Rocket Knight Adventures and Castlevania: Bloodlines.

Gotta digress. Sunset Riders in Genesis sucks. I used to love it back then but after comparing it on arcades, this is a case I preffer the Snes version over Genesis. All music is there, almost all of the stages are there (i'd say 80%), despite its censoring too, manages to stay arcade-perfect, which i preffer that over whatever they tried to do on Genesis/MD. It is a good game on its own, buy shouldn't have been a Sunset Riders port.

Music rights are notoriously idiotic. Getting the rights for a song costs a bloated fortune and that's even if they grant you the rights. There hasn't been an Inspector Gadget cartoon since the original that used the iconic theme. Yet the crap live action movie did because it had Disney money. I even once read about how a collector's Sesame Street DVD set didn't even have THEIR theme song either. As for TMNT, 4Kids was their producer and licensing agent at the time (Mirage still owned all the other rights, and had licensing agents for the original series), so I wouldn't doubt they could throw that much money around for song rights.
@JohnDoe-wq5eu

@@mightyfilm I think it's less about them not being able to get the rights and more about them not willing to pay the price they were asked to for it. 4kids seems like the kind of jerks that would low-ball something like that in a heartbeat. And they probably just said you know what screw it we'll just do a sound to like we don't need to pay that ridiculous price. I mean from what I've seen with musicians and "the industry" as a whole they are incredibly litigious. They will sue the crap out of people just because they know they can. I wouldn't be surprised if a sound alike didn't sound different enough than the original they would still try to sue. But well, in any cases, for being Konami's first games on a Sega console alongside Sunset Riders, both are solid and underrated. I really both like the SNES and Megadrive versions and the SNES version is aaaaaallmooooosssttt the best version. However I just can't accept how easy the home ports are. Max 4 enemies on screen even on hardest, and not being able to play 3 or 4 player coop. Sorry but that alone makes the arcade version hands down the best, despite the Megadrive and SNES having slightly better level design/3D effects and overall feel.

The 360/PS3 one you can attack in 8 directions instead of 2, which really makes it awkward for a while. At least it's 4 player, and I'd use a PS2 to USB adaptor which work on PS3. PC USB joysticks also work. My friends and I would switch between this and Scott Pilgrim 😀. Also the options in the SFC version are awesome, being able to change the pallette to comic mode and switching manual/auto run! Auto run on hard made the Technodrome level hard to beat the white tonfa soldiers, manual made it a breeze.

The missing screen throw is the most unfortunate thing about the Genesis version for me. It takes out a much needed additional combat element for combat that is a bit shallow to begin with. I don't quite see why the screen throw couldn't be done on the Genesis version to be honest. Surely they could have figured out a way to do it. I mean even on the SFC version it appears to only be using a few frames.

I just known this game by its name but never played it. Many thanks for this one that let me discover a very nice game. What is interesting is to see how Konami considered this game as a simple commercial product. Megadrive and SNES ports seem to have been designed to respect the system constraints and consumer awaits. Need to break all the level design, change musics, modify gameplay? No problem here. PS2 version is just puzzling. Why didn't they choose to directly emulate this game better than converting it quickly for the joke in another game, resulting in a crap and without soul work? we'll probably never know? XBox 360 is a different approach, born in these years when publishers was thinking players wanted old 2D games of their childhood converted using 3D elements to modernize them (maybe expecting they will interest young players). Nevertheless, you made me want to get my hands on this game asap. But if understand well, only arcade emulation will permit me to play it in its original form?

Good to see Hyperstone/Return getting in on the comparison. I did suggest it a few years back but you said it was too different! 😉 Overall I like the SNES version best, it improves on the arcade game with the extra level, new bosses and the Mode 7 bonus stage. Plus Super Shredder is a cooler final boss than regular Shredder and overall the game is less of a cheap coin muncher. Next best is probably the Return of the Shredder. While it’s not as pretty as the SNES version the controls are good and it’s not as cheap as the arcade game. I do find it a bit repetitive though with the game often sending the same wave of enemies at you again right after beating the last lot. Megadrive owners really did get the shitty end of the stick when it came to bosses though, instead of Tokka and Rahzar we got Master Tatsu and later in the game we just got lazy palette swaps of earlier bosses. 😡 I honestly wouldn’t want to touch the 360 game with a barge pole. I tried the demo back in the day and all the colourful graphics of the original were gone and the gameplay was compromised by making it “3D” so suddenly you had to be right in front of an enemy to hit them. Classic 2D belt fighters always gave you a bit of leeway on the y-axis making them much more fun and much less tedious.

Not really, it took very talented developers to make the MD soundchip sing, mind you in Japan there were guys like Yuzo Koshiro and Hitoshi Sakimoto that could make you sit there and actually enjoy the music of a Genesis game. But the SFC was untouchable in the right hands, listen to Tim Follins work on Plok for SNES, that games opening piece is absolutely amazing sounding, the Genesis could get nothing even close to that. But in the end, it all comes down to what you grew up with, those who grew up on Genesis tend to favor the Genesis, those who grew up on SNES take the side of the SNES. Myself I own both consoles, but owned an SNES first (my first Genesis was purchased 7 years after, I wanted the chance to play more games I couldn't play on my SNES, I have since grown both collections totaling between them 368 games, 188 SNES/SFC, 180 Gen/MD), but had friends who owned Genesis consoles for a short time before almost all of them traded the thing in and got an SNES.

And while I might be in the minority here, I also find the music on the Genesis version to be better. Sure, the samples in the SNES game are OK, but the slight delay/fade-in at the start of those samples always bugged me. The Genesis tunes don't suffer from that, and the synths used for Hyperstone Heist's music fit really well (I like the grittier feel to them). After seeing this video, wanted to compare each games' speed from one to another, and no, the snes version isn't slower than the megadrive one, in fact, the megadrive one feels a little bit more "heavy", and just by having a couple of stages that resemblances the arcade, that doesn't make it a port, more like an unnoficial hack.The ship level on the megadrive (and others), look almost like an 8bit game, far from the arcade or the snes. The arcade one is more fluent (obviously) and that's why it feels a little bit faster, and the foot soldiers sometimes run, taking that away, the speed is practically the same. See ya.

Both reshelled and the one included with mutant nightmare on PS2 were clearly already about exploiting nostalgia. The problem was there was issues apparently with various things with Konami so I guess they couldn't use all the music and stuff (which if you know anything about copyright law and Japan and music rights stuff it's pretty scary stuff) anyway they decided they would basically do "a version" of these classic well-loved games. The changed arcade game was bad enough but apparently the cartoon at the time (which I'm pretty sure was either over or close to it) had enough going for it that they thought they could squeeze/fart out one more game. Excellent video,as always, Mark. Turtles in Time is one of those games that really pulled everyone in to see and play it thanks to the amazing (and extra loud) attract modes just like Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II as well as Konami's other licensed beat-em-ups like The Simpsons, X-Men, and, of course, the original TMNT arcade game. A new mall had went up (semi-) locally the year before with a large, upstairs open-floor arcade, and they put in a couple of Turtles in Time machines as soon as they were available. You just had to play it the first time you heard that version of "Pizza Power" blasting. A couple of friends and two of my cousins and I were all enamored with TMNT, from the comics to the cartoon to the games, so of course we played this new cabinet anytime we had a chance. One friend got the SNES Turtles in Time port right around when it came out, which we had a lot of fun with it. I got Hyperstone Heist later on, and we had tons of fun with it as well. Neither game is as good as the arcade, but both are great fun, especially with a friend. And, of course, I bought Turtles in Time on SNES (as well as Tournament Fighters) a couple of years later when I finally picked up the system. I can't really choose my favorite between SNES Turtles in Time or Genesis Hyperstone Heist because I love them both, though I probably ultimately played the Genesis game more just because I had it earlier. Also, I agree that it'd be nice to have had a larger cart space for more of the samples, but I'd have really loved to have had a later re-release on a large 32 or 48 Megabit cart just to include "Pizza Power", even if it meant a high price, since it's such an iconic part of the arcade game. Anyway, if you throw the arcade games into the mix, I'll choose the arcade versions TMNT or TMNT: Tutles in Time any time. They were just amazing for their time, and it's a real shame that the original arcade game didn't get a Genesis port. I love the NES port (let's not even talk about the home computer versions of that game), but it really needed more powerful hardware and 15/16-color tiles to do it justice. And, it's a crying shame that The Simpsons and X-Men never got 16-bit console ports either. On Tutles in Time Re-shelled on the 360/PS3: it's not amazing, but that didn't stop me and some friends from having fun with it. I wish the game was backwards compatible with the XBox One (and Series consoles), but gamers always get screwed in the long run with licensing issues... So, Turtles in Time (and the original TMNT arcade beat-em-up) is one of my favorite belt-scrollers of all time, though I have to admit that TMNT III: The Manhattan Project on NES is actually my favorite of the Konami TMNT beat-em-up series: I love toss move, it looks great for the NES, and it has one of my favorite soundtracks from Konami. Still, Turtles in Time is a pretty close second. It's just too bad we couldn't get a home port back in the day with 4-player multitap support, though I'm pretty sure that would be asking too much out of the 16-bit systems. Also, I don't see why they couldn't have included the "at screen toss" in Hyperstone Heist...it's' not using mode 7 or anything on the SNES, just a two-frame animation in one of the background layers...they could have overwritten tiles in plane A on the Genesis or used sprites (maybe at the cost of flickering when the animation occurred if using sprites)...it's too bad the Genesis didn't have the sprite zoom function of the Master System and Game Gear's VDP, since that would have been perfect for the screen-toss...

I'm going to have to say the SNES/ Famicom version is the best one overall even superior to the arcade. It's the sound , hitting bosses in the SNES version is so much more satisfying.

I didn't know about the genesis version until i started messing with emulators around 2005 and was really impressed. Using the comic book art style was a great choice considering the genesis' limited color. I think number of colors is a lot less important than people make it out to be and clever artists and do a lot with these limitation; when I never thought sonic 2 was less colorful than Super Mario World.
@ravagingwolverine
@ravagingwolverine 3 года назад
Yeah, and the Turtles games don't really benefit from tons of colors because there's a lot of solid colored areas. I don't think Turtles in Time on SNES has many more colors on screen than HH. Though they could use colors the MD/Genesis did not have at all. The color advantage was more obvious with digitized sprites.
@zanegandini5350
@zanegandini5350 3 года назад
No it definitely is important, even here it's noticeable as the Genesis version looks much darker in comparison. This was often the case with arcade ports, the SNES looked better on account of having more colors as well as being able to do transparencies, whereas the Genesis had to use dithering instead. It's less noticeable in the case of Sonic 2 because that was made with the Genesis color palette in mind, but in any games that are on both systems the difference becomes pretty obvious.
@SchutzBoysband
@SchutzBoysband 3 года назад
@@zanegandini5350 SNES uses dithering for transparencies all the time because it's hardware transparencies take up too many resources for it's slow cpu. But arcade ports are terrible examples because they're usually developed by different parties for each system and are often low effort cash ins. TMNT is one of the few examples where the original developer handled the ports on both systems and the result is they're very close but also different in appreciable ways (unlike today's consoles which are virtually identical to each other and a PC). That the genesis version is darker is EXACTLY what I mean about clever artists rendering the difference a lot less important; some people like the darker art style and it certainly doesn't hurt the game.

@@SchutzBoysband Konami actually had a tendency of making arcade ports very diferent on different home consoles, mostly on the 8 and 16 bits systems, and I am not talking about "Cutting down" the games to fit on the inferior consoles, but actually changing the game A LOT. Just look what they did with Yie-ar Kung-Fu on NES and MSX, Salamander on MSX, Sunset Riders on Mega-Drive, Gradius on the MSX again (Even having a sequel exclusively to the MSX while there's also a Gradius 2 on arcade, making a huge mess of the series continuity :D), Even Twinbee on NES for example, which was very close to the arcade version as it could be, they changed the score system which IMO made the NES version a huge bitch to play for score.
@Bloodreign1
@Bloodreign1 3 года назад
@@rafaellima83 In the case of Sunset Riders, it wasn't so much changing things as it was Konami being cheapasses and going with a 4MB cart size,when an 8 MB cart size would've been a far better option. The SNES one was 8 MB, and it showed with a lot of stuff from the arcade version retained.

@Benjamin Owuye Jagun Mobile gaming making more money, pachinko/pachi-slot being very profitable, and management being management from what I've read. It's a damn shame to see what's happened to Konami. The worst part is they absorbed Hudson Soft so they could hoard their IP and do virtually nothing with it.

As per my previous comments... the crux of the battle for me is in the gameplay itself and, having gone back and forth between them, many many times, I know Hyperstone Heist PLAYS better than Turtles in Time. The combat is just a bit more refined and has been attuned accordingly. It feels better "fighting" in HH, even if (err) TIT has more glam and unnecessary Mode 7 glitz. Like I say, most will lean with TIT but those with objectivity about the games, leaving their fan boy bias at the door (and I mean BOTH Ninty + Sega btw) will likely feel HH plays better on the whole 👌

Never a Turtles fan, watched a few of the cartoons and it just seemed too... American for my palette at the time. Was quite content with likes of Final Fight CD and SOR II on the MD, countless others in the Arcades, so never paid this any attention on the MD. Did pick it up on the SNES many years later, mode 7 stuff was nice enough, but still couldn't see what all the fuss was about with the game itself. Loved the MD coverage as get to see what I passed over, might have to try this on emulation. 🤔

Too American for me at the time as well. No disrespect for American cartoons, but in Italy people my age grew up watching anime during the 80s (eventho we certainly never called them like that) and American cartoons were mostly seens as filler content. We were used to more mature and complicated story lines. As a matter of fact, here they tried to market the Turtles emphasizing the Ninja aspect, with a custom opening song filled with Oriental sounds and a montage showing Splinter in his human form in the Dojo as much as they could. They basically almost tried to trick us like we were going to watch a Japanese production.

@@ravagingwolverine Well, there was always a lot of drama with censorship and controversies about violence and sex and eventually the stream of Japanese imports dried up in the mid 2000s.
