Back in 1970, Charles Grant wrote and had published Battle - Practical Wargaming, one of the first guides to tabletop wargaming exclusively for World War Two. This new 2017 edition contains six chapters that were never previously published, plus new material by Charlie M Grant, the original author’s grandson and serving member of the Army.

I acquired my original copy as a schoolboy in the 1970’s. I absolutely loved it and played it using Airfix 20mm plastic troops that were cheap & readily available in those days, along with tanks & soft skinned vehicles in the same scale. I still remember how it was almost impossible to defeat a Tiger Tank when firing at it with a standard Sherman Tank! The dramatically labelled, close up photographs in the book really fired up my imagination & made me dream of one day playing on a large, dedicated war games table, covered in realistic buildings & scenic terrain, with well painted miniatures, vehicles and other accessories - all of which I have avidly collected in 28mm scale over the ensuing decades, encompassing a plethora of Historical, Fantasy, Sci Fi, Post Apocalyotic and Pulp Adventure genres….. Charles Grant and Donald Featherstone were the two authors who first captivated my fertile imagination and drew me into this delightful pursuit and I shall always be indebted to them both, for the genial and accessible style of their step-by-step tutorials & sample games. In one exciting chapter after another, they made one feel as though one were being patiently taught by a close friend, whose knowledge and experience was priceless, just as their boundless enthusiasm for this wonderful tabletop hobby was infectious….. 😊🙏

Really a superb review of what was a life-changing book for me as a boy in Florida in 1970. You hit the nail squarely on the head as to Grant's delightfully conversational approach. The rules were succinct, a nice nod towards fun rather than painstaking-but-lifeless realism and countless charts (which I got enough of in the decades afterwards). Many thanks for this trip down memory lane!

Still have the original copy of this great set of rules! Was always a fun set and you never had a headache at the end of a days gaming, unlike with many modern sets of rules!

I still have my copy (- dust jacket) that I got 45 years ago. I also have photo copies of the expanded rules published in Airfix Magazine. Great memories playing against my late brother in the 70's

Bought the original as a boy in Dover, where I believe the author then lived. Had discovered his work when the chapters were serialised in Meccano Magazine

Got these as a kid in New Zealand in the 70s. Best rules ever. Why? Easy to understand, FAST. Fun. I mixed ine up a bit with the "Tank battles in Miniature series" for a deeper experience. Rules since then have become a chore and you tend to have to be with the "IN CROWD" in most places and use some set of rules that has no heart. These did.
