@Stuckgrenadepin How is the Scout serving you?? I'm going to buy one tomorrow if it's still there. I had my heart set on the 1. Ruger Scout 2. savage 3. Mossberg BUTT.... The Ruger and Savage are non- existent now. I found 2 MVP Scout's and an MVP Patrol at Andrew Clyde's (2020) Armory ... 1 Scout w/ the Vortex... 1 without, and the MVP Patrol had a 3-9x40 scope... All in 308.
Mossberg has all kinds of MVP flavors these days. I liked my Mossberg Patriot .308 Win but then I wanted more recoil management and a cheek rise that I would have to find some way to make. I wanted to put it on an At One adjustable stock from Boyds but two emails confirmed they do not have one for the Patriot style of action. Then, I realized that I was basically trying to build an MVP. And I could do better by just buying it. Which I did, beginning of last year. MVP Long Range 308 Thunder Ranch Kuiu Camo. Cost plus tax plus shipping plus transfer fee came to a bit under 900 dollars. Harris bipod approx 80. Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6x-24x/50 mm scope was 400. Rings. Soft carrying case. I think I spent a total outlay of $1,450 getting this thing all together. And worth it. Touching bullet holes at 100 yards. Heavy wood stock and 20 inch bull barrel (threaded.) Steady while aiming off-hand. The weight takes a lot of the recoil. I use it for hunting. But, as mentioned in this video, it could be a battle rifle if used in battle. It does not have iron sites.

I know we all want a 308 battle rifle semiauto cause it's cool, retro, and feels like a mans rifle. But realistically speaking it's also twice or three times as expensive a 308 bolt, heavy to hump around with and expensive to feed. If you don't have money to burn then get a bolt and get good enough with it to put food on the table. A 308 battle rifle is like a 10mm gun. Do you really need it? No. But it's damn fun to shoot. Fun is expensive
a m and p shield 223 or 308 is ruffly the same price as this bolt action rifle. Granted that for a bone stock ar but you can build a ar with quality parts for cheaper than buying a cheap ar.
I agree with you Sarge.... I'll take aimed fire over volume fire every time. When or if the battle is on, shots that don't hit have very little meaning. I also have taken deer sized targets with the smaller calibers, but prefer the greater authority of the 7.62 Nato I trained with in 1968 if facing a two-legged threat at moderate ranges. Because the M1A falls outside of most peoples wallets, this rifle is a pretty good alternative. Thanks for your service Brother.MSG, USA Ret.
Suppression fire has its use tho. Sometimes you need to keep their head down and not firing at you so aim don'tatter volume does. Its why they switched to 556 to begin with. But yea i agree aed shots are more important when you aren't in the military in a squad

You remind me of my Uncle, He was a wise Southern man and Veteran also that told me the same thing you said about Country marksmen and I have witnessed the same. I know a guy from Tennessee that can hit a man sized target at 500+yards with a Blackpowder rifle and another from Kentucky that was using paper plates as targets at 800yards with an old Sears brand bolt action .30-06. Neither have military/LE experience. I wouldnt want to be down range of them in a fire-fight. I'm glad I found your channel and have subscribed. Your son is correct 22LR does weird and terrible things. There was just recently an accident at my local range where a young man was accidentally shot by his father with a ruger SR22 in the neck. He died before he reached the hospital. I have friends who were part of the investigation and apparently the bullet bounced off his spine into his head and then bounced out of his head down into his chest and out, the bullet was found on the floor next to where he was standing.
I love having iron sights on a bolt action rifle like that. Most hunting shots are taken under 200 yards anyway, Irons are fast on target and easy to use. They also make a great backup set of sights if your scope ever breaks in the field.
I know this video is 7 years old, but as a Canadian and a relatively new gun owner who wants to have the "battle rifle" or atleast options, this video really helps me out. We can't get AR15s here anymore, but I do have an SKS, and a SU16E, a 12 gauge.... and soon to be added to the collection is one of these. Just wanted to say thanks for the video!
Man this thing is a pin driver. So solid but so maneuverable. I've been blowing up cinder blocks with it at 150 yards all day long. And the 308 sound really does light up an entire valley.

Hey Sarge, from one old Army Sargent to another I have decided the battle rifle I prefer is my SKS. I know it's capabilities and trust it's reliability. I trust it more over my Colt AR. Never was a big fan of the 5.56. I prefer the punch through capabilities of the intermediate 7.62x39 round. After all, sometimes bad guys hide behind things. Like your vids.

Its a great rifle I want one myself but the best person with any bolt action is not a match for a person with a semi auto. Bolt guns still have a place but semis are the current standard for the average citizen
If the rail could be pushed forward to the Scout position and a decent adjustable aperture and front post sight be applied then I would love to see exactly how far I could push the range of engagement for that platform. I'm not a fan of long eye relief scopes. However the aforementioned aperture/post combo would certainly augment it.
The three necessary long guns, IMHO, are a 22 rifle, a 30 cal rifle and a shotgun. They will keep food on the table and provide varmint control, whether they walk on 4 legs or just two
I'd personally prefer the Scout to the Patrol rifle, as I like aperture/ghost-ring sights more than open sights. That said, I completely agree with your philosophy as expressed in this video!

very smart choice sarge a lot of people don't think about their scope failing or eotec them rifle sites are your savior,here in Ohio a lot of guys shoot distance cause we have to use slugs for deer so coyote an ground hogs we can use rifles most places you can shoot 5or 600 yards so I stay sharp on that in the off season,I'll probably buy that mossberg now good review thanks
so 5 years later do you still love this firearm? If the barrel warms up does it start to through rounds? I am in the market for another 308 and this one looks like a great rifle, also how is the action. Is it smooth and tight or does it have play and stick. Thank for the video.
That rifle reminds me of the savage hog hunter. It only has a 20 inch barrel, and people tell me it's a good quarter mile gun. Hell my 223 will do a quarter mile. I believe that my hog hunter, as well as that Mossberg will both do 800 yards. That's a nice rig for a 308 you have. Mossberg makes good shotguns too
Ya people who say things like that don’t know jack about LR shooting. When I was in the USMC it was fairly easy for me to get 500 yard shots with an M16 and iron sights then in ss school as long as I had a good spotter 1k yard shots were fairly easy. I have this gun in the 308 variety and have taken it out to 1k. I’m hear to tell ya it will do it with the right shooter. This is my go to gun for hunting deer 200 yard shots all day, very easily.
We've ground the same sand in our teeth, you know what you're talking about. The only thing I can see missing from the weapon is an adjustable comb. I've seen a few reviews and the accuracy of these rifles is top notch.
Sarge, do you still have the MVP? I know you were changing your weapon system. I have mine still along with my lever guns and an sks (10 rounds is enough for me too). Selling my last ar style rilfe. Tried to sell my restored M1 Carbine, but no takers. Have mostly migrated from semi auto pistols to revolvers, but to be fair i do still have a Beretta 92 and CZ75 and the obligatory glock. I prefer my ruger blackhawk in 357 mag or my smith 69 in 44mag with a matching level gun these days. Believe it or not i cannot find a single shot shotgun anywhere at a price that a retired person can afford!!!

Good philosophy of use video, but how well does the rifle function? How accurate is it? How reliably does it feed when one works the action with speed and authority?
You bring a good argument for .22lr, but the main Achilles' heel for it right now is that the ammo is still not readily available in the market. Hoarders of this particular cartridge have still forced the price up, and access down. Granted it will not be that way forever, but no one knows when reality will return and we are going on four years of a dry market. Until then, a .223 or 308 is a better bet for ammo availability.

Great video, Sarge. I would add (or maybe put a sharpened point on your point), gear of any sort (packs, clothing, firearms, etc) is 'situation-driven'. With firearms - intended adversary, terrain, income-to-purchase capability, personal experience/training, etc., all are factors when deciding what is mission appropriate. Training and experience cannot be underscored enough. "Practice, practice, practice" is a mantra most already ignore,...and that's only regarding marksmanship. Who (particularly the non-military patriots) has ever practiced stoppages of 'every' kind? Failure to feed/to extract, squib-loads, stove-pipes, etc., are problems inherent to self-loaders and manual-fed alike. How about mag-drop drills? ...communication to those with you, etc, etc. Just getting a feel for these things (meaning practicing at least once and hopefully a couple times a year) places a patriot so far ahead of when we fail to practice at all,...regardless of chosen weapon, gear, etc.
I like your philosophy sarge it is very sound principled advise. the objective in a shooting fight is to not get hit and be skillful enough to neutralize your advisory. there are no John Wayne tactics on the field. Patient wait is best for the right shot or escape. I have watched several videos on 308 scouts of different manufacturers, and it seems as though they all have lots in common with each other except Price perhaps. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them for functionality, that means that the holder of the weapon is of greater concern than the rifle. About caliber, President Reagan was shot with a 22 lr and nearly lost his life to it. It is a nasty little round.
You are not an idiot. Good advice. Went shooting yesterday and observed alot of tactical types shooting all over and not hitting anything over 50 feet. My go to battle rifle is a rem700 in 270 winchester. Its taken many deer and elk. I like to shoot clays out to 250 meters with it.
I had thoughts along the same as Sarge when I pruchased my copy of the MossB MVP and decided to stay/pull from my own over stocked 223, and what sealed the deal w/MossB was the open iron sights. Rugar's modeled bolt MVPs style does not go as far as to provide dove-tail slots, and w/Colt? I will not go as far to mentioned the name after their try in giving me a good 'screw' five yrs ago over a mis-alignedment contracted M4 upper w/their name stamped. "This MossB MVP is a sweet iron". I've moved the sling link mounting screw to the stock's rt outside 2.5 up from the butt plate. Works good w/other backpac'g stuff.
Howling Sarge there's a specific definition for battle rifle semi automatic, box magazine fed, full calibered. every rifle is not a battle rifle. this is similar to calling pistols with detachable magazines an "assault weapon"
Ok, so is that for specific rifles or patterns of rifles? Is every FAL a battle rifle, or just the ones that saw combat? Was every musket used in the Revolutionary War a battle rifle? If I'm skilled enough with a musket that was used in a war, is it a battle rifle? What if I hand it to someone who doesn't know how to use it? Does it stop being a battle rifle?
that looks like a sweet little brush gun, i am guessing the report is a bit sharp and bullet velocity will suffer some with the short barrel but a wild pig or a deer will not be able to tell the difference at close to moderate ranges, i love open sights because you can acquire a target FAST, and if you bed the action that would be a tack driver at 100 yards. Love this assessment. Whenever talks of survival come in people seem to think that it’ll end up like fallout where everyone is trying to steal and kill off each other. It will happen, but people are still good natured and want to avoid confrontation. Having things that will help with defense/survival skills is MUCH more important in the long run
I'm looking at getting rid of my 20 in 308 for one of these. Everything from storage in my gun safe to hiking in the Pacific northwest looking for deer and elk. I'm looking to see if this is a great fit. Could you please do another video of this rifle, you're the only one that's gone through it. Just want to make sure I'm buying a quality product.

Very sound advise from a veteran I hope people listened to what you said about the use of a firearm, I am thinking about the mvp scout rifle a good utilitarian multi purpose rifle able to get on target fast in the forest and able to shoot longer distance when necessary should be a good hunting rifle.
I would definitely take it. I am really curious about the 5.56 versions that are out for this rifle. Like you, there is to me a lot of appeal to a bolt gun that still has iron sights.
mark3smle I have the 5.56 patrol model... its one of my favorite. Mag pul 10 and 20 shot mags work the best for feeding smoothly and not being too long... 30 rounders off the bench or harris bipod is a pain in the butt
Sarge, I like the MVP and the M1A Scout and I'm torn between either one if you could help me decide given your experience which one would you choose over the other?
The M1A Scouts are great because they're piston-driven and very reliable. But they're also nowhere near as accurate as a bolt gun and not as easy to field strip and maintain. You can get an MVP for a fraction of the price of an M1A Scout. It'll also be more easily upgraded with stock options, scope mounts, recoil pads, muzzle brakes, barrels, etc. You can use the excellent Magpul PMAGS, too, something you can't use with the M1A. I'd go with the MVP and use the extra money for a scope, ammo, pistol, etc.
Do you have a preference of precision vs capacity? In my opinion a decent bolt along side a good pistol is the perfect combo. My line of thinking is save my larger ammo for hunting or defense and the pistol would serve as a Just In Case I can't reload fast enough, or the gun goes click. Quick follow up with decent round count.
Question sir. I know this sounds a bit nutty but I’m a large individual with large mits for hands. I’m looking at buying a 22LR but many of the grips are just small for my sausage like fingers. Any suggestions? I love the Marlin 336 30-30 but if it’s not an SBL model my fingers will fit barely. I tried Marlin SN 60 ; Savage Arms A22; Much appreciated.
You had alot of good points! Definitely like the shorter length for use in the thickets where I live. Also, the cheap (not in quality) Magpul mags make it less of a overall expense. I need to take a good look at their MVP Scout, with the Vortex on it.
I have the 5.56 patrol model, son has the .308. We love them... very handy compact guns, and we both have sound suppressors for them.... can't really use the 5.56 subsonic loads as they require 1/7 twist but aside from that, no real complaints.
There's lots of people out there running around with the cheapest AR-10 based rifle they could buy (or assemble) that would have been far better off buying one of these instead. Just look around here on YT at all the people having issues with their bargain basement PSA builds. I'll take a detachable magazine, compact, bolt action that functions well over a semi auto that can't get through a single magazine without malfunctioning.
Sarge, I got 3 savages model 12fv in 308, 6.5 creedmoor, and a third one in 6.5 creedmoor. All 3 shoot sub minute all day with good ammo. Problem is, if someone broke in on me , I haven't trained with a pistol. It's one thing to be able to shoot half inch groups with good ammo all day at a hundred. It's another thing to be able to effectively take out your enemy inside of 25 yards. I've spent much too much time on the bench rest. Shame on me. Time to start getting familiar with a pistol
