The latest season of the hit Netflix series "The Crown" has been criticized for liberties taken in its depiction of life inside the British royal family during a most precipitous time: the unravelling of the marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. Correspondent Mark Phillips talks with series creator Peter Morgan, and with royal biographer Penny Junor, about the show's dramatic license to thrill.

That woman seriously contradicted herself. It’s widely accepted that Charles married Diana out of duty-not out of love. Camilla was a divorcée and not deemed suitable as the consort of the future king. The interviews with Diana, “in her own words” are all over the Internet. She makes it abundantly clear that it was a loveless,one sided marriage on Charles part. Diana wasn’t perfect ,she was teenager while Charles and Camilla were old pros at the Royal game. That lady needs to have several seats.

Of course, the dialogue and certain events that occured behind close doors that can be the fictional and creative part of the series.

Good God, this is stupid. Look, the spirit of what is being portrayed is accurate. It's not about the details, not about what the Queen's bathtub looks like, but the most salient facts. A man who was nearly 30 was still in love with someone else. He didn't have the guts to stand up for what he wanted. He sleazed around Althorp and should have been nowhere near a 19-year-old girl. The two married, and one of them thought he could get away with running around with his fly open as princes and kings of old…in the 20th century. She was mentally ill, yes, and refused treatment - she did have culpability there. (Heaven forbid that anyone tells the truth about Diana being sick and the Firm's behavior towards her making it worse.) But he was a schmuck. A schmuck who didn't get it that adultery would not go down well with the public for any reason and the world had moved on without them. A schmuck who thought that using a woman as a baby making factory would be acceptable to the world at large. A schmuck that still doesn't get that he was much older than her and should have known better. The ugly truth is that the familial dysfunction of the House of Windsor can be seen from outer space. (Penny, you are decades too late to do damage control.) And it is not the right of Elizabeth and her family to attempt to stop the commentary found within the series. They would be the last people on earth who would want this series to shape public opinion, especially within Britain. And Penny Junor is exactly the type of wonk they would send out as their mouthpiece.

@jholts6912
@jholts6912 3 года назад
@PlatinMovie that’s a rather blanketed assertion. That’s simply not true of anyone I’ve encountered despite the radicals. For one no conservative I know would point a gun at someone because they r loosing an argument. People increase mask wearing in areas where the virus increases. No matter what political predisposition the state has. But anyways let me tell you my thinking on this: I’m pro life. You may disagree that’s fine. But note that when I talk to someone who’s had an abortion I still treat them with respect and acknowledge that they may have reason for their position even if ultimately unsound. Remember someone might be locally reasonable in understanding a position while objectively they are wrong. It’s rational for me to believe that I ought to eat a lot once I’ve been starving for many days. But in reality (as Napoleon’a troops learned) that will lead to death. Now remember that given my pro-lie position people who have an abortion are effectively killing a human being hence they are technically murdering someone. If one has any reason to not speak nor consider someone of value it’s when someone is a murderer. But I think here we find an essential abstract lesson: we are all in some way or another evil by heart. Hence to say of another “I will not speak to you for your immorality” is simply hypocritical given our own. Secondly, just because someone did something immoral or does doesn’t mean we ought not to try and converse with them about why they’re wrong. If not to help you in your understanding of the soundness of your own position.

I think the show paints them all as victims pretty well. Especially, when you see that the Queen Mother and Lord Mountbatten orchestrated Charles's relationship with Camilla (in the show). It was meant to build his confidence up. During that time Camilla was seeing Charles and Parker-Bowles who was seeing Princess Anne. But when Charles confides to Lord Mountbatten his intentions towards Camilla, he and the Queen Mother step in to separate them--in the show. And if any part of that was true, then they were all victims to a degree and they reacted as such because they all sought comfort in the arms of other people. Diana had affairs, too. And the people who remember that time know that Charles married Diana out of duty. He may have been attracted to her or intrigued by her, but he didn't love her. And if Andrew Parker-Bowles was serially unfaithful, Camilla always had Charles to comfort her. So Diana started looking for love elsewhere.

In other interviews the people working on the crown actually consult historians and former palace workers to get their things right. And of course some of the conversations in the crown could be made up bc no one really knows what happens behind closed doors unless an employee or a member of the royal family goes public in an interview or book saying these things. I think they did their research in term of getting the feel of being a royal and in terms of people and events of the time, but obviously it’s not going to be 100% accurate bc like I said, no one knows what goes on behind closed doors until it’s revealed.

i think what we need to remember about this show, particularly this season, is that it's an interpretation of modern historical events. it's showing us conversations that probably never happened in order to show how things played out as we know it, or at least in general. it's also important to remember that this season heavily revolves around diana, a girl who was essentially forced into marrying a prince who was also a future king without knowing the consequences that came with it and was trapped in an unhappy marriage with a man who was notoriously unfaithful to her and never made any attempt to hide it.

I'm an American and I watched Charles and Diana's wedding on TV and do you want to know what I think...well to bad your going to hear it anyway. Camilla made her choice way back in the 1970s and she knew who she married. Diana was a girl barely out of high school when she married Charles and Charles was a grown man when he married Diana. Charles was the one who was unhappy (from the beginning) in his marriage. He's the one who sabotages his own wedded bliss. Pictures of Camilla fall out of his diary, cufflinks of an entwined lettered Cees, I mean REALLY! And, this was their honeymoon. Sorry, had to take a minute because I'm laughing at how ridiculous this is. I think Diana confused Charles caring for her as love because she didn't see a real loving relationship when she was growing up and I don't think Charles did either. I don't know about Camilla's growing years but she seemed perfectly fine with everyone cheating, on everyone else so, it couldn't have been great. Charles immense privilege helped in leading him to his horrific immaturity that, he still has today. The Royal family helped gaslight Diana by NOT helping her get her feet under her at the beginning of her royal duties and her marriage to Charles. Diana wasn't perfect not by a long shot but she was different for all the others in the Royal Family. That's what the people were craving. They wanted someone who was like them. Someone who drove a mini, got a paycheck and held their hand skin to skin. It didn't matter that she was an Earl's daughter, she was one of them. Camilla loved her husband and was deeply hurt by his never ending affairs so, why not have an affair with the Prince of Wales. (you couldn't hear it but I just said a very husky and drawn out Prinnnce of Waaaless) Oh, let me have my fun. I think by 1990s everyone wanted out of their marriages (well maybe not Camilla) Charles and Diana were tired of living a lie but I do believe that Diana still loved Charles. Diana's only weapon was the media and she used it well. However, She is the one that lies in a grave and Charles and Camilla are married. It won't be to long and Charles will be King? Who knows ? I'm Just an American we sent a Dear John Letter to King George III back in 1776. It said hey Geo. this isn't working for us anymore so we think it would be best for everyone if we went our separate ways. Well, it was something like that anyway. Best of luck to all of you in the UK remember there are other things out in the world that are worst like the Pandemic, Climate Change, Nuclear Weapons. Well you get the idea.

There is inherent drama, as with all families, in the Monarchy. Whether it is Edward VIII & Wallis Simpson, Princess Margaret & Group Captain Townsend, Prince Charles & Diana--with the Queen as the central character. Peter Morgan has managed to capture this drama, this very real drama that unfolded in the papers. Dialogue may or may not be "imagined"--but oftentimes, even those discussions are well documented. Note how often in the film's private scenes, functionaries, factotums, servants , security--seem to be lurking in the background overhearing or witnessing scenes as they unfold. People talk. The most imagined scene with the Queen talking to Fagan who broke into the Palace, well, such an extended discussion never occurred. The overall effect of "The Crown" is to give characters a level of thoughtfulness, intelligence, concern, sensitivity they simply do not posses. Someone described the Duke of Windsor as being most vapid. One suspects that could be said of the lot of them.

The woman who writes her own books about the Royal Family surely doesn’t have a personal agenda at all, I’m sure, since another writer’s book is the foundation for “The Crown.” It’s obvious she’s part of the “blame Diana” crowd, because she says it was “Diana’s unhappy childhood” that “made her a victim”. I’ve got news for that woman. We all know it’s a drama made for television, that it’s not reality. What she also needs to remember is that the royals were offered a chance at providing insight and overseeing authenticity. They turned that offer down. What that author also needs to know is that we all realize this is the toned down version of the truth, that in reality the royal family is most assuredly much, much worse than we’re being shown. Hundreds of years-if not thousands-of royal inbreeding doesn’t produce the kindest, smartest people.

Like they’ve been dramatising it like this since the start of the show. Plus things on the show are inspired by true events and the things about Diana were inspired by what she said herself.

“The Crown” does nothing for the monarchy! In fact, it casts a bad light on the Royals! It sounds like the producer would like for the monarchy to end!

Of course everyone doesn't know this is a quasi-true take on what happened. Just read the comment section of anything regarding The Crown. I love Diana. But let's be honest. Charles' and Camilla's love has stood the test of time. They've been in love since the 70s. That's more than we can say for most relationships! It's just a shame they couldn't have been together from the beginning and spared so many people the pain.

Charles had other mistresses while seeing Camilla. He wasn’t involved with just her. You can look them up. Kanga was well known as well.

I am three episodes in this season and already I feel Penny Junior is wrong. Just from Fairytale, it seems as fair as it can be to Prince Charles who marries for duty and not for love, Camilla who pushes Charles to go with it, and Diana for being caught in the twisted web with no help or emotional support. Is Charles a victim of royalty? Yes, but he still took out his frustrations on Diana. Is Camilla a victim of royal protocol? Yes, but she consented to marriage with Andrew Parker Bowles, had two children with him, and rubbed the wounds of Diana by her very presence. Is Diana a victim of her childhood? Yes, but so is everyone to a degree and Charles's treatment of her amplified her insecurities and Charles cannot deal with that. Instead, Penny Junior continues to blame the victim instead of recognizing history honestly. The fact that Prince Charles cannot seem to make do with that is his own work to contend with. Prince Charles used Diana and Camilla if you really think about it.

I don't have Netflix but even if I did, I wouldn't watch. I think a disclaimer is a good idea. For example, even after 36 years viewers see "Amadeus" as real. Poor Salieri, more recognized now as a villain than he was as an 18th century composer.

I love how those so upset about this completely underestimate (or worse,are completely unaware) peoples habit of Googling everything in this series. I type in two words and my exact question autofills and returns several articles from major publications, with the full story and fact vs fiction comparisons and fashion slideshows, going back since season 1. In the year 2020, if youre still taking dramatizations as straight fact, you're either a child, an old or stupid.

I think they should add a disclaimer, he pretends that the public have an unshakable knowledge that what they're watching is pure fiction. But also, Diana was the victim of an unhappy marriage, as was Camilla, as was Charles; unhappy lives all of them, and inflicted their pain on each other. Some more than others...

Dear Penny Junor, guess what? I know it’s a drama. It’s called the entertainment. Is it entertaining? Yes, otherwise we wouldn’t be talking about it. Funny no one said anything until the Diana character entered the scene. And whose in isolation hat wardrobe? The he Laura Ashley Sloan Ranger look disappeared after the wedding.

I mean diana said it. She provided the material... As did charles unwittingly with a) his "whatever in love means" comment and b) his little phonebone session with Camilla released about the same time as Diana did her tell-all interview. Look that up yall. Oh and c) he actually admitted the affair in an interview after his phonebone session with camilla leaked....

Right, the dramatization by The Crown elevates the royal media mess that the "Americans and foreigners" witnessed for themselves.

Unimportant stories told by an unimportant yet terribly self-aggrandizing media focused upon making irrelevance relevant in order to make more money. In a nutshell, that is the royal family, the crown, and television infotainment like this.

I feel the Crown humanized the Royals. I feel bad for both Charles and Diana. Diana was way too young to understand and deal with the situation. Charles was not with a woman he loved nor had anything in common with. In Diana's own words she was made to feel crazy for being hurt and jealous, which are normal reactions. She could have handled thing better if given counseling or support. She was so alone.😪

Princess Diana experienced a very rare type of fame. Very, very few people are really capable of understanding that experience and it's effects on a person. Prince Charles was born into a whole world where he was heir to the throne ...who can really ever understand that? The Crown yet elevates them all.

Most of what season 4 showed is true sadly. Charles and Diana’s marriage was a disaster from the off and very nearly toppled the monarchy. The guy is very lucky his mother has lived so long as until recently he was very unpopular with the public in Britain. All of this still has relevance today as William and Harry were effected by this and Meghan in many ways gets the same media attention as Diana did. As for Thatcher, she was a great PM but also very divisive in Britain and at times disrespectful to the Queen and other people. Her antagonism towards the EU in part caused Brexit and her bad relationship with the Scots helped create the SNP too. If there’s one good thing that comes out this series it’s the Queen. She may not be perfect but she’s an all round decent person who will be much missed when she’s gone. In many ways she has kept this country and her family together (just about) 🇬🇧
