Has anyone ever studied and figured out how much volume of concrete Germany used in all of that period of their war? Seems like incredible amounts used and poured everywhere, even in their autobahn.
The statements in last few minutes of the video are pure BS. The final postwar division of Germany had already been decided at the Yalta conference in February of 1945, 6 weeks before the Western Allies crossed the Rhine. If the Western Allies had taken Berlin before the Russians, they would have only had to give part of it to the Russians, along with Eastern Germany. General Eisenhower saw no reason to get US and British solders killed trying to take German real-estate that had already been given to Stalin by Churchill and Roosevelt. So if Montgomery or Patton had taken Berlin before the Russians, it wouldn't have changed anything in Post WWII Europe. Berlin would still have been divided into 4 zones, and Germany would have still been divided roughly at the Elbe river. To claim otherwise is to deny documented fact.
You're right , BUT ? It would've been no doubt , as General S. Patton wanted , or suggested , to happen was that the Germans would've gladly sided with the Western Allied forces to go out , and defeat the Soviet Union . The USA , especially , had sole proprietorship of the A- Bomb , the USA , and Western Allies had an jugger naught of an Air force / Air Power , over several million men in arms to be mobilized , and great , and updated armoured vehicles , especially in better USA tanks that can match the Soviets ! But , the fact of the USAs sole ownership of the A(Atomic ) Bomb . I'll say this , my uncle was kia in SouthVietnams Central , Highlands , middle March 1968 , the winding down of bloody ass TET offensive launched by COMMUNIST NVA ( North Vietnamese Army Regulars , and COMMUNIST VC ( VIET CONG) nearly just over 10 days b-4 my 11th bday . Communist Eastern Block advisers , some troops , and Air force fighter pilots facilitated the Communist in SouthVietnam . Of course USA policy , strategy / tactics also facilitated the USAs problems , hindering the effort of the USAs/ Western Allies to thwart Communist aggression .
@@JohnEglick-oz6cd ; The fact is, the map of post war Germany had already been decided on, and where the Western Allies' armies and Russian armies eventually met had no bearing on that map, and to say otherwise is patently false. As for General Patton, he was a VERY successful WWII General, but he was not an oracle or a prophet of God. His words and political opinions were not brought down from Mt Sinai by Moses etched on stone tablets. In fact, George believed in reincarnation, and believed he had once been a warrior in the days of the Roman/Carthaginian wars. This is not to diminish his abilities and accomplishments, but like God idols of ancient Mesopotamia, his feet were made of clay so to speak.
Eisenhower did NOT want to sacrifice American troops taking Berlin, Stalin didn't give a crap, he was willing to sacrifice ALL of his troops. I studied this issue in 1968 while in high school, having several teachers who were involved in combat in Germany. When it was learned that they weren't going to Berlin, they were very happy. I agree withn the previous statements that the last several minutes of this video is crap
Westwall was started already in 1936 not 1938 as Pionier programm. 1938 was when it was given to organisation Todt and construction was accelerated. I don´t think the German considered it at 1944 "impreganble". Also the number 22 000 bunkers can be misleading, as how many of those were battle ready in 1944? During the battle of France 1940 they had about 14000 battle ready bunkers in Westwall, but since then it was a couple of years neglected and weapons and other material was stripped away to the Atlantic wall which was considered the main effort.
So, basically, if the West Wall hadn't existed and held up the western allies, they may have reached Berlin first and Germany might not have been divided.
Nah they'd already agreed how it would be divided. That's why Eisenhower was in no hurry to assault Berlin at all. Russia took a ton of casualties taking Berlin only to have to give up huge portions of it.
Yes, joshuann8026 is correct. The division of Germany had been decided at the Yalta conference in February of 1945, 6 weeks before the Western Allies crossed the Rhine. So yes, regardless of who got to Berlin first, the map of post WWII divided Germany had already been decided.
@@oldgysgt you hear of alot of Russian veterans saying any fool would have surrounded Berlin and waited out the inevitable surrender, but not Stalin nope he sent us into a street fight with thousands of crazy nazi kids. Also remember when Ike was later condemned for not taking Berlin he asked the guy to - go pick out the 100,000 American mothers that woulda been told their son is dead or maimed that taking Berlin would have been worth it.
Agree, wholeheartedly, that the comments at the end of the show are pure nonsense. It sounds as if Montgomery’s people have been resurrected. By the way, I would agree that the American generals, or at least some, were egotistical , but chauvinistic? Rather, they knew that Montgomery was overrated and slow, and that he cost lives. I’m surprised you didn’t mention that for all of his nonsensical comment about the Americans during the battle of the bulge, Churchill offered to have him replaced, but Eisenhower settled for a strong rebuke, and a kind of probationary status. Does that make Churchill chauvinistic? We expecting deserve more accuracy.
Montgomery moved faster than any American generals ever did. As for casualties, the combined British 2nd and Canadian 1st Army casualties throughout the whole Netherlands and Scheldt campaign came to far less than either the US 1st Army in the Hurtgen Forest, and the US 3rd Army in the Lorraine. Montgomery saved THOUSANDS of American casualties in the Ardennes with his quick thinking and total grip of the situation, at a time Hodges and Bradley were dithering.
I love the British narrator's rather stinging remarks at the very end of this film. Basically, he's saying that the American arrogance of command caused the Cold War. And, if the original British plan to cross the Rhine had been adhered to, Berlin would not have fallen to Russia. Because of General Patton's "petty" rivalry with Montgomery, Patton caused many more unnecessary Allied deaths. I just find this narration from what I now assume to be a British produced documentary film...funny! Because as an American, I never thought of it this way; however the narrator might have a point. But it really does not matter, does it? The Great War never ended, into WW II, and on-and-on...fighting everywhere...World War Three. Remember, WW III does not start with nukes, it ends with nukes.
Absolute bull, in the sense that the Allies had ALREADY divvied up Berlin and the rest of Germany before any of them set foot inside its borders. That was NEVER going to change. (Oh, and Montgomery was TOTALLY overrated. Nice cheap shot, though.)
For the first time ever, the losers wrote the history. Guess who wrote the official US Army history of WW2? Yep.....a certain hallowed German Field Marschal. The histories of the War we don't have many of are Soviet. We have German "memoirs" readily available, and heavily embroidered with falsifications and outlandish claims.
I'd love for your thoughts then as to how Japanese textbooks teach their young in school as to what their involvement and actions were in WW2, and why this causes on-going friction and anger from China. Japan were far from the "winners" of world war 2, but that doesn't stop them from manipulating history to suit their own agenda.
Generations lately tweaked written history a little and also oral history in the mispronunciations of people and places. For instance the military history books I have from many years ago all printed it as WWII, not WW2. Not that one is right while the other wrong, but it shows when your knowledge came into existence. Others have screwed up facts and the history, as illustrated in this documentary. A lot of you younger generations need to read and study more before making these You Tube narrations. I’m not talking or judging just this one as most of it was excellent and informative. Many others were not good at all.
Germany definitely won the cultural war due to their impeccable aesthetics. Hitler being a artist made sure everything caught your attention. It’s honestly the only time in industrial history where less efficient products were produced for the sake of its cool factor. But thanks to that, we can’t help but study them more.
Interesting point. To quote Leutenant Otto Carius (Tank Men, Robert Kershaw) "5 Russians were more dangerous than 30 Americans". He quotes another panzer veteran, choosing his words carefully, "The Americans were not particularly resilient. If you'd run out of armour piercing, even an HE round would get them out of the turret." The Brits, being a Germanic people, were not Germany's enemy, and Germany would have left the Empire alone if he could have the continent. Indeed, had the Brits sided with Nazi Germany the USA today would perhaps be a Japanese colony.... There is a good book by Alan Clarke on this. Worth a read.
@@nickdanger3802 Actually, on reflection Germany won. Eisenhower, Nimitz and indeed Roosevelt all were German as indeed is the Brit Royal Family! (Even the Greek side!) In fact isn't there a famous quote somewhere of an American saying: "Our Germans were just cleverer than your Germans"???
It was American manufacturing that won the war. The USA at that time (1940s - 1950s) was full of industrial factories. And the USA had ALL the natural resources within its own territory. The American population was also large, patriotic, hard working, and.... Protected by oceans on two sides, Canadian arctic to the north, and Mexican desert to the South.@@johnbobson1557
They should have sent Patton to the low countries, and had Monty park and fix the germans on the sigfried line, it would have been perfect for Monty as he excelled at sitting and doing nothing!!!!!
Montgomery won more battles and took more ground through more countries while facing more quality German opposition than any other Western Allied ground commander in WW2. Patton was a bit part player.
@@lyndoncmp5751 Patton ordered his troops to attack a British supply depot to steal their resources. Fortunately the British chose not to fire on them.
...very inaccurate documentary...it started with the map where they put Farlaise 200miles to the west...not just a Faux Pax, it´s the start of so many inaccurate information, false conclusions and very soon it becomes the quality of an high school project...sorry, but please do your homework first.
