Hi William, from various books, accounts etc, contrary to what they show in the movie, Lutyens was not the fanatic Nazi, it was Lindemann who towed the party line. Whilst I have sympathy for all those who lost their lives during that chase, I have always felt sorry for the prize crews (last time seen alive were all sitting in a room that was hit by a large calibre shell). There were life boats on board, a message to the British and fitting a white flag to the boat may have saved them even though they would have been prisoners. I’ve also always had sympathy for the aircrew who were given a ‘reprieve’ when told to take the ships log and photographs to Brest. Sitting in the plane, engine gunning, waiting for launch only to find out that a splinter hitting the hydraulics had made the catapults inoperable.

A question. In the book Stefan shows the Bismarck on 27 May 1941 with aircraft recognition markings on the decks restored in full colour. Given the weather that week, the damage sustained causing Bismarck to be down by the bow in rough seas and the harassment during the night of 26th by Vians destroyers I find it hard to believe that a priority or even a possibility to repaint the aircraft recognition markings in red, white and black. If you look at photos taken by Ballards expedition to the wreck showing the stern, the background colour suggests grey (although 70 odd years submerged in complete darkness at several thousand meters may have some effect ). Any suggestions, advice or guidance please.

@GRAYR189
@GRAYR189 4 года назад
I believe that it was from survivor accounts and the ship's log or war diary. As she approached the coast of France, Lindemann gave orders that the turret tops be painted yellow as aerial recognition signals for the expected Luftwaffe cover. There is a write up about it at the kbismarck website.
@richard21109

@@GRAYR189 this paint scheme make no sense...because even if the order of painting the turrets yellow was true (there's no photographic evidence whatsoever) the Baltic dazzle camouflage was long gone by then.
@GRAYR189
@GRAYR189 3 года назад
@@jarkmodels True, but remember also that the Baltic camouflage scheme had nothing whatsoever to do with the ship being recognizable to Luftwaffe reconnaissance. It was designed to make Bismarck unrecognizable to surface units of the Royal Navy by breaking up her outlines and giving an impression she was smaller than she actually was. The yellow turret tops (main armament only) and the swastika bands on the forecastle and fantail decks were intended to be identifiable to air units (the surfaces they were painted on were, after all, easily visible from the AIR). It's true there's no photographic evidence of the yellow turret tops (at least no KNOWN photos), and the main turret that has been found near the wreck is upside down so there is no way to know what color its top is. But there doesn't have to be photographic evidence of something for it to be true (for instance, we don't have photos of Hitler actually committing suicide but we know he did). Ultimately it's unprovable, but the probability that it's true is very high.

Kinda nippicking, but there is no record that the roofs of Bismarck' main and secondary armament turrets were painted yellow. They were all dark grey. Also, with Baltic Fleet markings... Were the radar domes really positioned like this for the painting? I think they were more likely facing forward and backwards respectively.
@kapitanpi88
@kapitanpi88 4 года назад
There is a good record of Bismarck main and secondary artillery turret tops being yellow, as well as barrel endings of turrets B and C. This was the case in early May 1941. When Bismarck was deployed to the Atlantic, the turrets were already changed to dark grey. Turret tops of main artillery only were painted again in yellow at the time of the sinking. The rangefinder & radar cupolas were really trained to starboard when the Baltic scheme was applied. It's very easy to check with photos, this feature is visible really well...
@jarkmodels
@jarkmodels 3 года назад
@@kapitanpi88 I disagree. Can you provide that information regarding the yellow painted turrets?. As I mentioned in a previous post, even if the order of painting them yellow was true, by then the baltic dazzle camouflage was gone. Don't get me wrong, your model is astonishing, but the paint scheme does not seem correct.
