Beau Guerrier we have about 20,000,000,000,000 that actually matters and it is a large debt for sure, a large Portion of it is actually protecting Europeans actually... My country's why is unsustainable in the long run we have a government that is constantly growing that is why when you see a conservative such as Donald Trump he is always preaching about spending the less and lowering the deficit we cannot go on protecting the world without everybody paying their fair share we also cannot keep going into wars in the Middle East that we benefit nothing from as the Republican party is now deemed it in nation building in our image AKA fellow democracies if you look at our debt compared to say China or Japan or Germany for that matter our debt is actually low compared to our gross domestic product. I am not arguing the United States has a large debt by the way but I am saying that socialize Nations such as Venezuela grease or other nations similar to their economies can't not survive Venezuela being the most recent proof. hyperinflation is a bitch and if the United States had that happen the world's economy would collapse and literally billions of people would starve because our currency is the world currency

Repair & eventual dry berth doesn't get cheaper the longer you put it off. Meanwhile it's been rotting away internally & externally for lack of maintenance. Glad I got a chance to tour what you could years ago.
@norman7179
@norman7179 7 лет назад
When the ship was in service, the large crew did continuing maintenance and the ship was dry docked at regular intervals for maintenance below the water line. Now it's just a handful of volunteer workers doing what they can with very little funding. Dry berthing will work but altogether TOOOOO much money went into planning and administration costs, fees, studies, etc (bells and whistles) which ate away at the budget for repairs. Now, we're no better off than we were two decades ago and the ship is in much worse condition.
@rogervoss4877
@rogervoss4877 7 лет назад
You're correct - when there's not enough money for effective work, waste what you have on plans & studies to LOOK like something is happening. That was worse than doing nothing at all, because it gave the appearance of progress. Years of the internal framing sitting unpainted in that water have done the worst damage, now it's a worry if enough reinforcement can be done to safely dry dock it from what I'm seeing.

For those who are saying "drydock", nope. The problem is not simply some leaks, the entire hull is the problem. Not that many years ago consideration was given to the idea of trussing the propulsion machinery (boilers, reduction gears, and the engines) to the main deck because there was fear it was going to fall through the bottom. So no, it can't be drydocked, the hull won't support it. My gut feeling (nothing more than speculation) is that she's past the point of no return.

The former flag ship of the Atlantic fleet is so poorly maintained and as a Texan I am deeply ashamed that now monument is just as important as any other monument if not more because unlike other old warships this one still has the ability to fight again. That salt water is just a ship killer specifically on a ship that has not moved in at least twenty years.

CME Gordy as I understand it and I may be wrong, the armaments are battle worthy, but the hull is not sea worthy for the open water. As it sits now. It is sad that many old war wagons in mothballs are in the same shape you just don't here about them because they are still government navy property.

At one point I actually learned my way around the ship very well from visiting it so much. I recently returned to it earlier this year and I was so disappointed. The below decks are off limits, the AA guns can't be turned, and the cooking kitchens was filled with crap. I really hope this ship is repaired, and that when they do so they get the AA guns working. The State of Texas needs to put together a solid business case for preserving the ship and building a tourist attraction around it. In 2016 almost 400,000 people came to the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, with nearly 300,000 paying to tour the ships there. Certainly Texas can put together something on par with Mobile Bay.

Beware if your city plans to receive a battleship, aircraft carrier or any other large ship to be a museum. Long Beach purchased the Queen Mary in 1967. So far they've spent $200 million on its conversion and repairs. The older the ship the more money it costs to keep it afloat. Sad that the sea is working against this mighty ship.

Perhaps the Texas needs a new home, a dry dock instead of being constantly in the water. The Maritime museum in Brisbane, Australia has done exactly that with the last remaining River class frigate, the HMAS Diamondtina, permanently drydocking her to extend her life and also cut down on the maintenance costs that start to build when a ship is constantly being effected by the corrosive qualities of water. It would be an expensive proposition in the short term but would very quickly cut down on the yearly costs

I know this is a couple of years old... but I am commenting with a bit of an update. Texas is not just leaking but is in danger of SINKING now! Two local salvage companies have donated several of their largest salvage pumps (something in neighborhood of several hundred TONS of water pumped out per day capacity), the next problem is to provide them with electric power, the memorial foundation WAS 6 months behind in their electric bill and forgave several months before that. Another salvage company has VOLUNTEERED to tow her to the dry-dock (but the problem there is at her current draft she it too deep for the ship channel (and without the pumps running in the channel will only get DEEPER). Lastly the dry dock they want to use has SUBSTANTIALLY DISCOUNTED the costs of hauling her out, BUT this is NOT FREE, there are also some questions about her ability to be put on the blocks in the dry-dock and stay in one piece due to her water load internally. She is a gorgeous ship but is another of the sad collection of ships that is rapidly approaching the point that amount of money to just KEEP HER THERE IS BEYOND HER BACKERS FINANCIAL ABILITY, other ships on this sad list include; Hornet (in San Francisco), Intrepid (they TRIED to move her from her berth and nearly ripped the rudders out of her about the time this video was made), Lexington (and most of the ships in Battleship Cove)....

@@kman-mi7su i see your point and would like to see HMS Victory afloat, but odds are it would be a mistake, dry dock is the best bet, HMS Victory was on the verge of sinking for decades before they put it in dry dock after ww1. Public opinion and the King saved Victory from being broken on a beach several times. Sadly Texas doesn't have such a famous illustrious history an popularity in the mass population. So it will likely be on the verge of sinking for another 25 or more years before its given a dry dock, its not in the eyes of the public to keep everyone talking about it is the problem, its not in new York or Washington, victory was at Portsmouth one of the then most important naval bases in the world and easily visible, Texas is out of sight, out of mind.

Because human lives are more valuable than a few thousand tons of steel? Don't get me wrong, I love naval history in all its forms. I'm happy the USS Constitution, HMS Victory and HMS Trincomalee are still being preserved, I've been to the USS Iowa, and the USS Midway. But you cannot put an object, *any* object, over the value of human lives. The moment you do, you forfeit your humanity. What I wish they would do is work together and pitch in to support such a repair and dry-docking procedure. Alternately, a public-funded repair job. If every person in Texas pitched in with $3, they would be able to produce roughly double what is needed to drain, dry-berth and repair the ship. The excess could then be spent repainting the ship and developing a more extensive marketing campaign to bring in more visitors and subsequently recoup the expenses of the repair. They could go a step further and do what they did for the IJN Mikasa and just fill its lagoon [or a section of it immediately surrounding the ship] with concrete. Let the ship sit in concrete instead of water and the vessel will last decades, maybe even another century, given proper care. But nobody wants to spend money out of their own pockets for something they love. I'd pitch in myself, and I'm not even an American. I don't even live there.
