We're back with another shipyard time-lapse. This week's timelapse covers the continued fitting out of blister tanks 7A and 7B and the installation of tank 8A between June 7 and June 13, 2023.
As always if you want to see the work for yourself, come take a dock tour and walk around the dry dock floor! All proceeds go to help sustain this ambitious undertaking!

If you would like to support the ship but cannot make it for a tour, check out our online ship store in which the proceeds go to help continue this project.

It's great to see the old girl getting repairs. If only we could get Congress to divert a paltry sum to the fleet of museum ships for preservation efforts.

@@Masada1911. They only have “trouble” because they to busy laundering the money to their own pockets or “accidentally” pisses away an additional 6 BILLION to Ukraines soy boy Zelinsky who the funnels 400 million to his pocket which we as taxpayers on the hook for. Lets not pretend that this country would have trouble maintaining some museum ships.

its always an interesting concept getting monies and permission to do stuff like this, i for one could easily guarantee many hundreds of personnel would gladly give free time to volunteer and do this kind of work, perhaps under supervision to keep continuity and things on track, what i am interested in, is the numbers, i.e. scrap metal value to the value of new materials cut and assembled into the modules which is the major cost - and i know that the figures will not be known for sometime as hopefully most of the scrap will be made into valued items for sale assisting with costs, 'owning a piece of Texas' i guess the only extras then are the cost to use the floating dock and its man hours, that's the sort of thing that could be waived by congress, surely - ok so its a business, of course it needs to make money all the time, paying for its keep and to keep folk employed, but its worth a look into - i know myself in not only how important museums are to keep artefacts safe, but for education and tourism, its pretty big business, i worked with a small museum that had 70 or so visitors roughly per day, bad days around 35, but very rarely, the museum did pretty well for its self

When she's done and headed to her new home you need to get the US Navy to send a ship to escort her. Texas served, she's one of the oldest in the nation, she deserves it.
@travissmith5945
@travissmith5945 Год назад
I think she is the oldest ship in the nation that isn't still in service. The oldest battleship in the world is Mikasa a predreadnought for Japan but she's encased in concrete so it's a bit different
@drfarrin
@drfarrin Год назад
@@travissmith5945 you are correct, she's the oldest retired military vessel in the US. The oldest ACTIVE is the Constitution and she is a wooden sailing ship from the 1700's the navy maintains and uses. The Texas still needs an escort though. She's earned that.

just to pose a ? Hypothetically if this ship was to return to active duty (i know there is no way this will happen) would the new torpedo blisters perform as designed? or are they just for ascetics?
@ZootSuitCooter
@ZootSuitCooter Год назад
Good question. Complete guess but I would say from a cost standpoint probably not since they don't have to be. I doubt they'll even fill them with foam. Pure speculation.
@SunkCostGarage
@SunkCostGarage Год назад
Hypothetically, I would think not. These replacements were designed differently from the originals, more to provide buoyancy than protection from torpedoes. They are shorter and would not provide as much protection to the underside of the ship.
@andrewreynolds4949
@andrewreynolds4949 Год назад
They don’t cover as much of the hull depth, but I don’t think that matters with modern keel-breaking torpedoes (they explode under the ship to break it in half). It’s also not as much of a sacrificial layer so more of the shock would travel into the hull.
@hond654
@hond654 Год назад
The goal is 2 fold: - increase buoyancy - make the blisters more serviceable by having flat bottom, so easy to paint and keep them dry.The new shape does not go as deep as the old one, but nobody will see it. At the end, they are not for protection. Theoretically if the torpedo hits just below the new blister line, yes, the defence is reduced.

Hello! I wont"t share my name but, I got to go to galveston ( my families favorite vacation spot in here in Texas) and on our last day there, I got to see her, from afar atleast. I'm only 11 though fascinated by almost anything sea related, and I am coming back to galveston on Aug 21st to see her leave port. And my biggest question: will she sound Her horn?

If I remember correctly, the figure for dry docking and work was $35m paid in advance. This includes towing and insurance. Just think. Battleship Texas is almost as old as Titanic (a couple of years difference) but it is cheaper and safer to visit.
