Ever wondered what it's like to wander around an 887-foot battleship, trying to find your way to her lowest point, then straight up to her highest? We wondered, too... so we did it! Come along for the adventure.

On my first day as a volunteer on New Jersey our curator remarked that every day is leg day on the battleship! So true…esp if going from 7 deck to 011…

It is funny, when you get below the waterline it starts to look more and more like a submarine.

The last time I was aboard the Iowa was in 1997 when she was at the Philadelphia Inactive Ship Facility . The staff gave us a three hour tour but not from bottom to top. One of the person's on our tour was an original crewmember from W.W. #2 and the other was a former radioman from the 1980's crew. What a great day that was to tour a great ship. Thanks to all Iowa staff and crew for maintaining and improving a truly irreplaceable naval asset.

Wish the Iowa was closer to me, I was an OS on the Iowa in the 80's. To far for me to travel these days. Thanks for the video's, brings back memories.

I was stationed aboard the IOWA for 4 years 1988 to 1991 as a Gunner's Mate 2nd class i worked in turret 2 until striking into the G-4 division. I was in charge of Mount 54 Port side. I was on the IOWA that dreadful day April 19th 1989, i lost 5 close friends in the turret explosion. Such a while ago but just like yesterday in my minds eye.

First time I visited Iowa I didn't do the backwards down the ladders. I had shorts on and half way threw my tour my lower calf's above the heel were almost raw from rubbing on the steep steps!

Truth! Been there, done that, too. 😆

Are there exploration tours with an overnight a possibility? 🤔😉
@BattleshipUSSIowaLosAngeles
No overnight at this time, but if you want to go exploring, check out our new Escape the Mothball Fleet experience. It's super cool (if we do say so ourselves): www.pacificbattleship.com/escape-the-mothball-fleet/

It's scary that I knew the route from the bottom to the top.

I've always wanted to make a 3D model of the Iowa, but finding dimensioned technical drawings for her is nearly impossible. Would anyone at the Museum know where I could find drawings, or know someone I could talk to who would?

The last surviving complete set of plans is sitting on USS Charleston waiting to be destroyed. The original plans for BB-34-BB-66 were apparently destroyed about 20 years ago.

@@colosseumbuilders4768 Not necessarily... Our COO had a chance to get aboard CHARLESTON last year and one of the things he retrieved was a treasure trove of plans and documents. 😉

@@BattleshipUSSIowaLosAngeles But there are over 200 boxes on USS Charleston. Only a fraction have been saved.
