The reason for the "oversaturation" of the scenes on Caprica is because you're on a planet that just suffered a nuclear bombardment just a few weeks earlier. The environment is screwed. It's done on purpose to make the viewer feel uncomfortable.

Old timers like me are specially fond of Tom Zarek, in part because the actor (Richard Hatch) played Apollo in the original series ~1978. After that series was cancelled Hatch spent years trying to keep the legacy of BSG alive, trying to reboot the series, do a sequel, or a spinoff movie -without success. Like in the original BSG, the character of Apollo always tries to do things “by the book”, while Zarek is the oposite: he wants to change the book, or follow it only when it is convenient. In the end, Richard Hatch played Zarek in more episodes than he did Apollo in the original series. He died of cancer a few years back. R.I.P.

Enjoyed both the original and reimagined series. The original seemed more campy to me. This version was gritty and well written! Richard did a great job as Apollo and was fantastic as Tom Zarek!

Minor nitpick, but there’s a continuity error in this episode. When his gun falls off the briefcase it has a silencer, but when it’s picked up the silencer is gone.

Funny coincidence, I just got home from where this episode was shot (including the indoor locations).😆Roslyn is speaking to the delegates from the floor of the concert hall, and I was on that same stage just two hours ago.

Sharon-2 never claimed to be Boomer. She answers to Sharon. In the episodes leading up to the reveal at Delphi Spaceport, she'd been trying to prepare him, even suggesting at one point that maybe not all Cylons are equally indoctrinated. The implication to me was that she hated lying to him, & wanted to come clean. Helo's conjecture has an element of truth. While Humanoids aren't actually cloned humans, the best metaphor for them & their society is "a society of clones." What would relationships be like when people are mass produced? This early in the show, it's still deliberately vague what the Humanoid Series is. We eventually learn more. We learn (hinted) how they name themselves. Ellen Tigh is extremely ambitious. Her main character fault is that she's constantly trying to push her husband beyond his comfort level; when Tigh is fully aware of his level of competence. He knows he's operating at his limit. Cloud Nine is an interstellar civilization's equivalent of a top of the line luxury cruise ship. I'd imagine that before the Colonies fell, it took its wealthy passengers on leisurely tours of colorful nebulae, with stops at resort planets along the way. (Galactica movie Blood & Steel takes place on a resort overrun by Cylons.) I loved how we saw Boomer's "safe date," Lt Gaeta, at the dance on Cloud Nine, since obviously she can't be with the enlisted man that she truly loves. My personal theory about the Humanoid Series is that each model has a common personality matrix, which gives each member the same basic personality traits; but that, otherwise, they're like the sort of identical twins which sometimes share thoughts, & frequently think alike. I also was totally convinced by this point that Cylon Boomer had basically "gone native," which is why she'd done such a shitty job at sabotage. She desperately wanted to be human.

Many of the names (people, things, planets and tribes) are yet another layer of quality writing in this series. And there are reasons for it. They're not at the forefront but the choice of names contribute to the richness of the grandly-scaled Battlestar mythology. Even a search of "symbolism of 6 in numerology" (or any other number) reveals some fun things about Cylon models.

One final suggestion you combine the final parts of season 1 into one vid. :D Cannot wait to see your reaction - be prepared, the opening montage for the next episode is straight-up art.

If your interested in Tom Zarek's back story, their's a comic book called Battlestar Galactica: Zarek published by IDW (I believe.) It is an "adaptation" of Zarek's in-universe book "The Revolution Within." I'm fairly certain it has no spoilers beyond his debut episode.

I always found it interesting that Zarek's path to power is utilizing the very democratic government systems that he wants to topple. If not for Adama and Roslin adhering to Colonial law and recognizing his election to the Quorum, he'd be stuck on the prison ship for the rest of his life.

This is where Roslin screwed up. By taking Baltar as her VP, she unknowingly set into motion a chain of events that she'll later regret.

And here is the other potential for weakest of the season. For me at least. It's important to explore this side of the fleet, but it is, as Baltar puts it, rather grey. That whole subplot with Valence kinda went nowhere? He was an assassin, but we don't know who for really, or who killed him. As for the Caprica filter, keep in mind, that is a nuked planet. The filter is there more for the messed up atmosphere than it is the fact it's an alien planet. Oh, yessss. Almost forgot, the one news commentator at the start in the middle of the other two is played by David Kaye, most well known as the voice of Megatron in Beast Wars back in the 90s. I don't really have much to say about this episode, TBH.
@russellward4624

Sure we do. We know Zarik was looking for him and got the information from Ellen. Ellen gets the reward of the weekend on the Rising Star which we know is a Zarrik stronghold. It doesn't matter who did the actual killing it was at Zarik's behest.

Gaius went into politics for one reason only. Himself. Nothing noble about that.

This episode kind of made me dislike Roselyn and her government. Look at the 'luxury liner' ship they are on which is all rolling fields and trees. A competent leader would have every square inch of that ship planted with food crops.
@Argon314
@Argon314 Год назад
I think this thinking is a bit too simplistic. There’s no reason to think that Cloud Nine has the capacity to handle any more than a carefully curated facade of nature. After all, why incorporate infrastructure into a ship that wouldn’t serve a purpose? It’s a luxury liner, not a farm ship. Extra stuff is extra weight, which means higher fuel consumption, which would eat into the profits of the cruise line that operated the ship prior to the war. Growing food takes a lot more than just putting seeds into the ground, especially when resources are limited and therefore efficiency is paramount. It’s also questionable whether growing plants in soil makes sense in space; much of the off-world food production may take place in hydroponic facilities. What about fertilizer? How much do they have? What can they produce? Is it better utilized in hydroponic growing? Could it even be used in soil? Does Cloud Nine even have the quantity and quality of soil to support crops? The infrastructure to plant, fertilize, and harvest crops? We also don’t know much about the fleet’s food production and storage capabilities. It may be that they simply don’t need to produce any more, or that producing more may overwhelm their ability to process and store the excess. Even if turning Cloud Nine into a food production facility were possible, it just may not be worth the effort when all these things are taken into consideration; I don’t think we can indict Roslin’s leadership on this basis.

Capitalism didn't fail society. In fact all 12 colonies were thriving when they were attacked by a non-capitalist society.

Capitalism led to the objectification of the Cylons.
@kentetsuno
@kentetsuno Год назад
No, capitalism led to the creation of the cylons. They were literally objects, so they didn't need to be objectified. As the cylons evolved, the ethics and morals of the society, which are the fetters on capitalism, also needed to evolve. The "old system" didn't fail; the society's ethics failed to keep up with the rapid changes in technology (a parallel for us). However, it's obvious that capitalism can not work in the current situation for the colonial fleet, so Zarek has some good points. Good points can still come from bad people.
@Paehrin
@Paehrin Год назад
The 12 Colonies weren't thriving iirc. Some had it way better than the others. I think to remember that Gemenon (Tauron also ?) particularly was poorer and ofc, Caprica was richer. The show Caprica depict pretty well that they weren't a paradise.
@Ken19700
@Ken19700 Год назад
@@Paehrin just because some had it better than others doesn't mean that they all weren't thriving. Extreme poverty is the default human condition. All 12 colonies had interstellar space travel and strong interlinked economies. None were in even remote danger of collapse.
@Paehrin
@Paehrin Год назад
The fact that some had it better than others and that the global economy was thriving means some get fucked over for the benefice of others. So yeah, at a large scale (the entirety of the 12 colonies) they are Thriving, but on the smaller scale, they aren't all thriving. You can even see the reflect of that later down the show, when they explore how the inequalities of the colonies transfered to the the ships. The economy might have been thriving, but some people sure weren't and still aren't at this point. So what good does that do ?

This is not my favorite episode but is certainly one of the bottom 5. Apollo and Starbuck act like bullies. They don't seem to really care about freedom of speech for everyone other than themselves and their kind. They don't seem to understand what a democracy is and that the military is supposed to protect the rights of everyone. Laura just wants to be a dictator and Gaius just through a rock into her plans. Good for him. How the h=== does she know that Zarek is behind "it" what ever the "it" is? The guy had not tried to shoot anyone. How does she know she was the target, if he indeed had a target? That Gaius won means that there actually there was a tie. It will not be easy for her to govern such an evenly divided society, or rather, it should not be easy. To have to make compromises by talking with the opposition is a hallmark of a healthy democracy. There are just so many unethical and anti-democratic thing in the episode that it has to be in the bottom 5.
@russellward4624

Except we know it was Zarik. They don't have to know soemthing with absolute certainty to know soemthing is true. Zarik is pushing for a VP why? Because if the president is killed he takes over. His buddy shows up with a gun. Coincidence? He tries to kill Apollo later on and it's certainly in character.
