I don't know if its just me, but I've always thought that Karnath's Lair, Intruder Excluder, Terra Tubes, Rat Races, and Clinger Winger (stages 6, 8, 9, 10, and 11) all seemed way too long. They all seemed to just drag on and on... Like they were all supposed to end at a certain point, but devs lengthened them to mess with renters at the time.
This game is beyond technical masterpiece and also has great presentation in its story as well, but it's ruthlessly brutal level of difficulty (though not right away) makes it really hard to get through.
I realize I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said before, but I gotta say, this is one of the most original and inventive games ever made. The fact that they were able to be so clever with the mechanics as well as create such a uniquely weird camp-slapstick-sci-fi universe within the first couple minutes of the game is just incredible
There's a lot of memorization involved, so that part would be relatively easy to practice with save states. But generally, yeah, the game is difficult because no one really wants to put that much effort in to it.
One of the coolest soundtracks of all time. And frankly the greatest "pause" music ever. My sister and I played 2 player . The game is insanely hard , but 2 player is 1000 tiers harder lol... Took me about 15 years to finally beat the game. Good job Arcus!
man I remember how much I though this was an obvious rip off of ninja turtles, pretty much everything was back in the early nineties. That said, this is definitely the most endearing of them
I never got past the speed runner stage I remember the ramp sections would always fuck me up auggggghhhhh even as a lil dude After a few hours was like FUCK THIS GAME!!!!!!!
Arcus- what ya think of a mega man battle with other excellent players live on stream? Retro Entertainment TV on facebook holds head to head matches. It be fun to see ya come hang out. its all for fun and the fans.
Thats essentially the point, the videogame industry was losing money due to people renting games and beating them in just a few hours, so they didn't have to pay more money to keep the game longer. So there was a spike of difficulty in more NES games, and Battletoads took that to the next level.
Man, the fact that you can beat this game at any speed qualifies you as a highly skilled retro gamer… that you can do the tunnel sections while interacting with chat is just legendary.
The bike part was SUPER impressive! I only way I was about to get past it was because I was lucky enough to have a Nintendo Power subscription and one of the issues showed the layout. My brother would read out the next move as I went.
You lose a lot of time during the boss fights when you get stomped. It is possible to do those better, they are all basically the same thing, and you’d be sub 35 easy.
TMR (The Mexican Runner) would be proud of this run. It's a solid time of a very hard game. It's the 8th best time in the world (35:09) TMR's record for this category is 28:34. TMR is a god at this game though. TMR's achievements of thing game include (record times aside) - first ever zero damage run - first ever one handed run - first ever blindfolded turbo tunnel
I love Watching Arcus and I love that I can watch his videos with my kids. Other runners are fun as well, but a lot of them have a tendency to use language I would rather not expose my 8 and 11 year old to.
Battletoads is such an amazing game. Not extremely hard but very challenging. Seeing the play through brings me memories when I used to play this game over and over. I dare to say I would had been a good contender for these speed runs, was this done in the early 90’s. Also, no need to back before double tapping for big punch/kick. Don’t remember any time I’ve missed the enemy but I can see one running over it.
Ok folks usually I'm not impressed with gamer skills. I'm impressed with skills like woodworking, cooking, welding, singing, instruments, and such. But I've played this game before and it whipped my ass to no end so I'm ranking this guy up there with Pavarotti and Jimmy Hendrix
In the past a friend and I rented this game, we played it non stop for 10 hours and couldn't beat it, I can speed run Contra and Mario Bros but Battletoads defeated me, props to you!
This game would have been so much better with a level passcode system. I was never able to get past the third level with enough of my sanity intact to enjoy the rest of the levels.
I like watching this whenever I wake up really early. Jaust jaust jaust. Especially when I had to get up early everyday to go to the methadone clinic back when I was taking it. Jaust jaust jaust!
After I beat battle toads imma beat contra in record time again 🥱friggem arcus da man!... Btw 17:39 he looks like he's one one of those kiddy rides where you put a quarter in lol 🤣
Your calmness and cool hand demeanor when youre doing the hover bike segment kills my childhood! It's funny because I remember playing some of these levels, but not all of the levels and then I remembered that I typically warped to the end, and never actually beat the race levels. I never actually did beat the game, either...
in high school I revisited Battletoads and could get to the elevator level (after previously never beating the hover bikes). I realized then that most levels after the hover bike are even harder, especially the airplane level (15:50) as well as the ones I couldn't even get to without an emulator. The game is ridiculous
@@ewoknroll I kind of get why games of that era were so hard at times; replay value and limited options. They wanted you to get the most out of your money, which is fine. But damn, Battletoads was over the top in that regard.
