bacterial issues have hit me hard over the last 3 years to the point where ive actually re built the pond and system just to make sure ive got rid / or hopefully got rid . you mention its on par with KHV but in my opinion its worse than KHV as you can sort khv in one hit , but this shite goes on for months on end . ive lost thousands of pounds worth of fish over the 3 years or so i had this issue and this is documented on my channel on youtube . One of the worst things about having to deal with Bacterial issues is the paranoia that comes with it every time you see a raised scale or slight knock , thinking its gonna break out again . This is a great pod cast and i think it needs talking about even more, as one thing you said about the Shame factor does ring true . well done guys . keep these talks coming . 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank for bringing this subject up. We are not talking about bacteria enough. 🙏 i lost half my collection to cross contamination. i bought a koi from a guy and everything fall apart. See, the problem here in Denmark, it's hard to get the diagnostics done. We have to contact a vet in Germany or Holland :( Luckely last year some dealers started to collaborate with some vets. so it have become easier to get the right help. But there is still alot of people that don't know they can get the help 😊 Don't know if you have heard of Baobio+ but that stuff helped many here in Denmark with simple cases og bacteria. Taking the food away from the bad bacteria as you speak of 😊 i use PSB bacteria and Baobio+ and my pond and koi have never looked better 🙏 Thank you for another Awesome podcast ❤
What a fantastic conversation guys! You guys talked about some issues I’ve been having and I listened and learned a lot. I now have a much better understanding of how bacteria(good & bad)can affect a pond and my koi. I appreciate your direct approach and how you don’t sugar coat sh**t. Please keep the videos coming. The koi community needs experienced people such as you guys because trusted, useful information is very hard to find. I’ve lost a koi every day for the last 5 days. A couple from ich which I just couldn’t get on top of no matter what I did. One from what was clearly bacterial due to the popeye and wond on the mouth. Two of them are a mystery, clean scrapes and no visible signs of infection. Thanks guys 👍
Great pod cast. Would be awesome if Briany (excuse spelling) could be a guest on future pod cast. A lot of value to it and thereafter we can access her directly if that makes sense. I know however, may not be possible....time is money. Thanks again guys
Another great talk on an issue I faced last year. Total lack of information out there. All the cost and stress nearly took me out of the hobby. Struggled to get a vet who knew about koi and even then his knowledge was limited.
@@KoiTalkMagazine thanks for asking, fingers crossed it is sorted, as I have not had an issues over the last 5 months. I don’t let the temps go below 13c. I will only really find out when I move a couple of fish over from the quarantine pond in the coming weeks. The most promising sign is that the remaining fish are now recovering from the odd scratch themselves, whereas before they would immediately have an ulcer. I did make lots of pond changes, including running the supply water through Gac, along with the catalytic carbon for any heavy metals.
Great info,so glad that someone has finally spoke about this taboo subject and yes I do think a lot of people get embarrassed about this issue. I’ve used Bryony for a while now and I can honestly say she’s brilliant. I had a problem and was at my wits end I got put on to her and problem solved. Koi aren’t cheap so I look at it as buying one fish a year without getting a fish and have her come out twice a year. Peace of mind to just know the fish are happy and me !!
Another great podcast from you gentleman. It’s such a shame that the koi health forums within the BKKS sections was axed years ago, as these knowledgeable members where able to offer advice, get hold of antibiotics and they were regulated, within the BKKS, so you knew that any advice they gave was correct and above board, as they’d been trained. Misinformation is dangerous and can often make the situation worse.
What influence does the food we feed our fish have on the bacteria in our ponds? We encourage good bacteria growth in our filters, but surely that additional source of nutrition in our ponds also feeds the bad bacteria? Warmer temps in our ponds the fishes immune system can cope, but as soon as the temp drops, that defence is weakened? Does that extra nutrition also feed parasites? Interesting subject and massively complex
What do u think about uv water sterilisation A ground water supplier I visited lately was talking about UV sterilisers that they use in bore well home water supply apparently kill 99% of bacteria in a single pass making it suitable for human consumption .do you think this might help with keeping the bacterial load in the pond water low
Hi guys. Very informative. I kept koi not for long 6years and don't have expensive fish, but love them all. Yes it is not easy to find a vet that has experience in fish. Most are focused on cats, dog ext. And to get antibiotics from vets that has limited knowledge of koi is hesitant to give antibiotics or treat. Some of the medications you read in books they don't make anymore for instance Fish-terramycin. I got hold on some antibiotics 3 types and injected different fish to see which ones were working. Desperate actions. Baytrill Nuflor (Florfenical) Amikacin. Luckily Amikacin did the job. The problem is someone has to grow the bacteria to know which antibiotics to use. Make me wonder to get into medicines.
I am still somewhere in the middle of an issue… 😢 had it for YEARS. Had vets help with Anti Biotics and all seemed good… however having waited a year with no problems, I added one fish and it died inside 3 months, same issues as it is not the first one I have tried Case continues but will have no fish in or out until I work out what it is 🤬
Sorry to hear that. We are very busy but why don't you send us an email contact@koitalk.com with a but more info and we'll see if we can do anything to help.
when I add a problem with my koi I use a vet in Manchester they did help me but I do remember them telling me I should of registered them when I started my pond and koi collection so my advice is to find a vet just incase you need one because it is not essay fining one and they do the lab test as well for the becterial that I did not know at the time I add my test done somewhere else that is time consuming when you can have it all done at the same place
Wow, someone talking about the real elephant in the room. Lost the whole collection in 2022 without antibiotics or vets. I'm still in the hobby, but I'm just seeing how the next couple of years pan out . Wish I had heard the chat right at the start of my problems. 👍
