2-Prizers seem to be very balanced in this format. Still better than the normal ones considering the extra prize penalty, but not in a way that single prizers get completely overshadowed. I really wish the pokémon TCG was still like this. With every single set that is released in the big-basics eras (EX, tag teams, Vs), 90% of the cards are instantly thrown off as pure bulk and only a few Vs shake up the format. The only single prizers worth playing are cards that can do a bazillion damage with basically zero energy while having to chew through half the deck to even get going, such as regigigas, rapid strike malamar, and mad party style attacks. I prefer the game that resembles more of a kitchen table pokemon with a few more turns, rather than playing the Vstar/Vmax of the day + dump engine of the day (inteleon, bibarel, cinccino) and winning the 2HKO race.

I love these videos! I had originally played during the release of the original Base Set through the time Crystal Guardians was released, only coming back in 2017 when a buddy taught me and a fellow MTG player. I was like, "What the hell is a GX?" Him and the Burning Shadows Prerelease got me rehooked to this game. Even though I stopped in 2006, I still kept up until sometime before B&W was released. From what I had heard after that, when Black & White came out, it was meant to basically reset the game, and a lot of things reminded players of the original 1st gen format. It simplified a lot of things, the game had an easier learning curve, made matches super fast, but made a lot of evolution-based decks, one notable exception being Blastoise Deluge, obsolete and abilities were a one-all that absorbed the separate Poke-Powers and Poke-Bodies. I knew a few folks that were still playing but stopped back then because they hated the game had "devolved" to that point. Playing it now, especially via block format, it's still a very fun game with the ramifications continuing to this point (big basics continued to the Vs and are still seen in some of the new ex's). I still like to use an Archiestoise variant for online Expanded, and that, plus Jason Klaczinski's blood, got me wondering about old formats. I'm glad it is starting to reverse back to the golden age, with Scarlet & Violet's sets being a breath of fresh air, though keeping some good things that have been around since BW. However, I still believe the 2003-2009 timeframe that we had ex's and Lvl.Xs were indeed the best times the Pokemon TCG has seen. There are still groups playing the 2006 and 2010 World Championships formats (as well as RS-PK and DP-AR) because of the viability of many decks and the closeness of matches with some mechanics that haven't returned to this day. I still have an LBS variant and Palkia Lock for these occasions, but unfortunately, prices being driven up during the pandemic and in the couple years prior since the 20th Anniversary has made it unaffordable to many. I say proxy up some decks and go relive some of the best times this game has seen!

I got into Pokemon TCG right at the end of this format so unfortunately I didn't to get to enjoy as I was just a noob and there wasn't as much information back then to get right into the game as well as cards being more expensive. But what I do remember from this format is the variety of decks that were around and it was literally like 10 that were in the top 2 tiers and they were all match up dependent where at worse you had a 60-65% to 35-40%. So even when you had a tough match-up you still had a pretty good chance to win it. The finaly thing that I loved about this format was that every deck had it's own stadium. We saw a couple being used here. The variety of stadiums and how they were so useful to the strategy of the deck was just really cool since you could see stadium battles happening pretty much each turn of the game. Edit: Love that he gave props to Alex B. Dude is a legend in the game. He won a worlds (don't remember which one exactly but I know it was before this format) and as was mentioned he also top 8 at this one besides other multiple deep runs in Regionals, Nats and Worlds. Dude was an insanely good player and really fun person to be around too.

This was such a cool video! I was only 7 years at this time and i had no knowledge about the playable side of the Pokemon TCG. I noticed that a few of these retro cards are simikar to the ones we know today. Rocket Admin is basically N or a bit similar to Iono for example. The Pidgeot is the same as the Pidgeot EX from Scarlet and Violet. Those decks look pretty strong from the time they came from and i love how interesting some of the mechanics are. Great video. I reckon chip gets to keep his job. You were playing at a good tempo, but it was still easy to follow along for a format I have only casually read through. Maybe the only improvement could to perhaps make the card graphics a bit smaller, as at times they overwhelmed the screen. For someone who knew what the cards did, it would have detracted from the experience. But overall I loved this. Great work.

So some cards from this era are worded in a weird way. There used to be a “doubles” format rule set, we’re each player could have 2 active Pokémon. So when a card like Sneasel ex refers to a “defending Pokémon” defending means the same thing as active. So if you were playing with doubles rules, the opponent would choose which of the 2 active Pokémon went to the bench. Sneasel still let’s the user choose the benches pokemon to bring active (see the first sentence of drag off)

I know this is an older post, but I wanted to add something for future reference for others. The 2x2 format was something that was used from the RS through the DPP era, being abandoned after the HGSS sets started being released, since it was noted as being unpopular with quite a few players. That's one of the reasons why the learning curve was a bit higher then than it is now. Wording was a little word. A card like Pow! Hand Extension had the same wording. But there was confusion about it. For a doubles/2x2 battle, the opponent could choose the Pokemon to switch, but when it was just a regular "one active only/normal format," then it would act the way Gust of Wind/Pokemon Catcher/Boss' Orders would. The Pokemon the opponent would choose to switch during a 2x2 would mean the Active, since there were two. However, quite a few folks back then would think, innocently that it meant, innocently, that it was up to the opponent to choose the Pokemon, kind of like Warp Point/Escape Rope. In the play groups I was a part of then, some of us were confused until we asked the judge(s) for assistance when the 2x2 format first came about. However, there were some cheaters, though few, that would try and convince the player that the card meant exactly how it was written. This is probably why this format was eventually discarded, as well as folks being annoyed that some tactics that wouldn't work for this type of deck, although it helpedvor didn't affect a few (decks like my favorite of LBS could still work well, since if they had a Jirachi from EX Deoxys, they could still attack with the other and use the Jirachi's search ability beforehand). When Black & White came out, it was meant to basically reset the game, and a lot of things reminded players of the original 1st gen format. It simplified a lot of things, the game had an easier learning curve, made matches super fast, but made a lot of evolution-based decks, one notable exception being Blastoise Deluge, obsolete and abilities were a one-all that absorbed the separate Poke-Powers and Poke-Bodies. I first stopped playing by that time, but I knew a few folks that stopped back then because they hated the game had "devolved" to that point. I recommend using all cards until Team Aqua vs Team Magma. Basically, "Poke03." It's Singleton. Pop 01 is actually fine as are the 04 cards from the dragon set, but I like simplifying things for people. This is the most in depth format because you can use the most cards effectively, while being encouraged to try alternative strategies, as you can only use 1 of each card. You can still have 4 of a particular Pokemon of course. But, you're looking at 2 different Cleffa. This applies to Trainer cards too. If a specific Plus Power provides a particular boost, but there is a functionally different effect, you are allowed to run both. If a Trainer card is a person, it is also a supporter. Avoid errata. Try this.

Ptcgo or live should make a way to play these old formats

I have only played standard but wow the game use to be way more interactive. I also love that there not some Ace Pokémon that did all the work, on the dark side it was the teamwork combo. Love it. Not just “new doing new things”. I wish for the next scarlet/violet years we have less super chuncky beat sticks and more interactive cards

Instead of power creep mechanics like Vmax they should consider bringing some of these old mechanics back
