grant123 yeah, it's not really bauhaus is it? they just used basic shapes and called it bauhaus

Hi @grant123 , The forms, unlike the tiara for example, have a significant impact on the way they move and on the way their movements are perceived by the audience. The tiara is there only as a narrative reinforcement (for princesses) and as part of the set decoration; these giant globes around their hand serve the dance itself. I think that was Schlemmer intention.

grant123 The tiara is just a convention passed down from the tradition of representing royalty in ballet. So it in not specific to Schlemmer's ballet, and therefore not useful to it. So, the tiaras are useless while the specific ball decorations are not.

You should look up "Victory over the Sun!" This is a Futurist opera (bauhaus-like) with an extremely weird and frightening plot.

Mostly the dances have a Story but the viewer normally is in charge to work that out for themself.

I am glad you brought this up, and I would like to share some of my thoughts on this subject if you don't mind :) The aim of this piece is not to show technical virtuosity, flexibility, or impeccable ballet skills, that is what modern dance, classical and neo-classical ballet are for. This modernist "ballet" has a much deeper conceptual dimension to it that, in my opinion, surpasses any physical mastery. The fact that the costumes restrict the dancers and make them look as if they were geometric forms is essential to the piece, it questions the human form and human behavior. At the same time, it questions design and architecture, and how it is apparently conected with a still object and often dissociated with life, or seen as an accessory to life. As a dancer myself, I find that one of the biggest problems with contemporary dance nowadays, is the concern with the athletic, with the ever-moving, flowing body, and the entertainment of the public, and the artistic purpose of it is forgotten. Dance can be stillness, dance can be walking and breathing. To see someone implicated in the act of dancing as a statement, as a political manifesto, to me, is far more powerful than seeing someone just dancing and lifting their legs high up. For me that is not dance, that is a sport. I hope this gives you another insight to the possibilities of dance, which are endless! I also love ballet technique, and it's amazing to see that it can be associated with such modernist, avant-garde creations like Triadic Ballet. All best!

AstroDreamer well beauty is subjective so what you find ugly others will find beautiful That's what is so great about art, it doesn't need to match the aesthetic preferences of everyone

AstroDreamer successful art isn’t always supposed to be beautiful. it doesn’t even have to be aesthetically pleasing. the fact that that’s the basis by which you judge art is probably why you can’t see the artistic merit of this

MrAwesome172 and Adam Cunningham: I respect the fact that artistic taste and the definition of beauty varies from person to person. I respect the dancers for their performance. I respect the costume creators vision and creative ability. I'm not insulting anyone, or at least not trying to, but I think I'm in the majority when I say that these costumes aren't eye catching or "aesthetically pleasing". Yes, everyone has their own taste, making it subjective; everyone is entitled to their opinion, but in this case, I think those are just bizarre. It's definitely abstract, to say the least.

AstroDreamer it’s not supposed to be aesthetically pleasing or eye catching. did you watch the video? they highlighted at the very end how the crowd laughing was a reflection of what the creator envisioned when he made the art form. what you’re doing is like focusing in on the cinematography of a comedy movie

I feel like people need to understand that on from the turn of the century, art and 'being beautiful' don't really follow the same path any more. The only exceptions to this are maybe architecture and fashion, but most other art forms actually aspired to be 'ugly' in order to challenge the audience's world view. I mean, look at 12-tone music or the art of noises or Dadaism. That stuff doesn't sound or look nice. But it does carry a message and that's why I love art especially from that era.
