Growing up in East San Jose and in Frisco in the 70's and 80's these cats getting down took me way back. it was very refreshing to watch and reminisce about the old talent shows, strutting and hitting in the bay back then! I can't believe you people cheer for these so called new generation poppetts, there group routine was off they had no timing and if you people call them poppers ,hitters, movers, you must not have seen original poppers, do they even have names to their moves,? Where do they get these basic moves from stealing from original poppers, and yes I'm talking cause I was the best in Sacramento California, and I could still beat alot of these so called poppers, it pisses me off these cats get all this recognition, but in our day it was none, they just thought we was thugs, but really if all cheer for this y'all cheer for anything,

I can’t imagine the complexity of this, if you can’t appreciate this routine humbly paying homage to the earlier Bay Area strutter routines then I don’t know what to tell you. Original poppers you say? The word wasn’t around when the youngsters then - OGs’ now from Oakland, CA were boogalooing…SF and the rest of the Bay Area, Sac, Central Valley, LA and the rest of the world own it to Oakland for the original boogaloo style that influenced others to branch off of and lead to an awesome routine like this. Recognition you say? These guys barely get any views or are known outside the poppin scene. Back in the day there was also no internet so you had to have been there in person to have witnessed it or watched a recording of it from by a peer or from the local news if you were lucky enough to get the contest covered. Some of these guys are also going around the world to teach in places that was impossible 35 to 40 years ago to reach. @@mefaun Yes, I caught the video shortly after I initially replied to the previous guy. There’s a whole series of the history of this dance Otis has been releasing. some real research is being done we should all appreciate. I always assumed that LA started what peoples call “Poppin” little did I know the inspiration for it started in Oakland. Good segment on Sacramento Playboy Stix and Otis did by the way. I’m not qualified to say the exact timeframe of the video but it’s very likely no earlier than 79 and no later then 82, my guess is 1980-81.
phillip lopez, First off...their were some in the audience who probably never seen anything like this before, second...if you were on that stage you would have invited your friends for support! I agree that their routine could have been "tighter" but we don't know their situation! I'm from Diego, been poppin' since "79", yes we all know that the originators came from Sac & the Bay! Every city/region of Cali developed their own unique styles based off of the "foundation-styles", there's no such thing as one city/region has the baddest poppers, have you traveled from Sac to Diego to find out? Dudes from Sac come down to Diego and get "turned-out", dudes from L.A. go to Richmond and get turned out! Jamaica & New York are the "hip-hop" originators, but the West & the South changed the game!
