Completed my bb30 install and this was very helpful. Many subtle things well covered like easy way to push the rings etc.

So, if you’re just replacing the bearings you don’t need to remove snap rings if they’re in good condition?

Dumb question: At 4:02, you say "...retaining compound and activator if you’ve got a carbon frame". But isn’t this inside the bracket, not the frame? Is the bracket carbon too? Sorry if I’m not getting it. I’ve never taken a bottom bracket apart, just preparing for the day I may have to. It seems most other people use the terms "frame" and "bottom bracket" interchangeably so I’m confused about what the difference between them is. E.g., I have a Cervelo R2 (yes, I’ve seen your opinion of that exact make/model but I’m new to road bikes and bought this second hand before I was any wiser). My understanding is that there is a metal bottom bracket "sleeve" inserted into the frame into which the bearings are pressed. Is that correct, or is the bottom bracket an integral part of the carbon frame?

Hi, if I don't have Loctite 641 can I use Loctite 648?
@dominicbritt
@dominicbritt 3 года назад
Hi Hambini - when installing your bearings in a carbon frame, would you apply the 641 and activator at the same time...or would you pre-treat the surfaces with activator beforehand and allow to dry for 30 minutes before installing the bearings? Cheers...

With all the negativity around bb30’s would you advise steering clear of bikes with them fitted. I’m looking to buy a new bike and notice a few I’ve looked at have this fitted.

Very helpful video! Could you say something about the effect of over/under tightening the cranks. I think I replaced the bearings ok, but they don't feel entirely smooth under high torque and considering they are only 150km-1 week old I am surprised and I wonder if I'm crushing them because of over tightened cranks. Thanks. ps I don't have a torque wrench that can do the torque required to tighten the cranks.

Hell of a better way than hammering lol

Agree 100%. Hammering, especially in carbon is a recipe for a fracture.

What kind of steele, 6806 bearings do you recommend getting? There are so many different ones at different price ranges, its confusing. Are they all the same?

Excellent video. Thank you! Just one question if you don't mind ... Is there any good reason to remove and service bottom bracket bearings that seem to be in good shape? Park Tool's youtube suggests that you don't remove press fit bearing unless you are going to replace them.

I agree. If you are going to knock them out. They need to be replaced

This video is amazing! Thank you for making it. Can I ask though, the bearings I removed had some extra external seals between the bearings and the cranks. Would you recommend doing without these, reinstalling them, installing new ones?

@Hambini, what do you think about using Loctite 648 (Shear strength 3,900 PSI) instead of Loctite 641 (Shear strength 1,700 PSI) you suggest? I did use 641 but it didn't reduce the creaking in the long term, creaking reappeared after only 30km. I have bearing press/removal tool with M8 screw so I guess I should be just at the edge of being able to pull the bearing out once it's completely cured using 648 (~20kN). Any suggestions? A big fan of you, thanks.
@Hambini
@Hambini 3 года назад
Usually the medium strength is enough. if you need the high strength then you may have a problem pulling the bearing out.

Can you comment on the necessity of the Retaining Compound? That's the first I've seen that used.
@Hambini
@Hambini 6 лет назад
If there is any irregularity in your shell (and there might be) it will reduce the issues associated with it.
@SCWgreg
@SCWgreg 6 лет назад
I can vouch for this, it helps mitigate play between the shell and bearings... that can otherwise lead to bottom bracket creak.

Hello, i've got an aluminium frame. Would you recommand Loctite 641 rather then 609 and eventually why ?
@Hambini
@Hambini 6 лет назад
I have found 609 to be quite poor as a retaining compound. 641 is better as it flows better and provides better adherence. 609 doubles up as a threadlocker so it's a multipurpose product.

BB30 bottom brackets - the biggest POS perpetrated on the biking public since Biopace chain rings. Been through SIX sets of bearings this season and just blew another one. I'm taking this $300 crank and throwing it in the trash as soon as my new 24 mm Shimano XT arrives. Good riddance.
@Hambini
@Hambini 7 лет назад
nulife022 you might have a fit issue on your frame. Going through bearings that quickly is unusual
@nulife022
@nulife022 7 лет назад
It is a carbon frame and has an aluminum insert. Bearings fit great, press in nicely everything lines up great, works for a little while then the bearings are shot. I think it might have to do with me weighing 200 lbs and liking to climb the huge mountains here in Reno. Also, my pedaling style is not very smooth, but I'm working on it. I just replaced it with a Wheels Manufacturing outboard bearing adapter and XT crankset - no more grinding and the crank spins so smooth and friction free. Thanks for your concern, keep pedaling!
