If you haven’t already realised, we are interspersing group banter and chat with hopefully informative farkling and accessorising videos.
In this one, we try out the Carpe Iter bluetooth controller. It’s a small rechargeable device that clamps to your handlebars and enables you to control an Android smartphone without needing any wires. It is made to work with an app called Drive Mode Dashboard which provides...ummm...dashboard functionality like speed, trip, mapping etc. Soon it will be updated to include turn-by-turn navigation as well as OBD data displays (like a rev counter for example).
Can the Carpe Iter controller and a phone be a good way of getting super-bling multi function dashboard features that you normally get on a £20k bike? We reveal all.
Note we bought all this stuff and didn’t get any freebies.

Thanks mate, that sealed the deal on one of these. I'm getting a cheap second had Andriod to run roadbooks and Nav only for my bike. This means my dedicated comms device (my phone) with all my data etc stays safely in my jacket pocket and doesn't freak out in the heat here in Australia. Thanks again.

I have the same device, One advise I put in oposite direction joystick down so if device is no properly clipped I think is more difficult to lost it.....

Thanks Bob. It’s tricky getting all 4 of us together especially with the ‘vid infecting everyone, so we like to drop in some more detailed vids in between the banter and bollocks. We have an amazing bike comparison coming up though which will astonish the world.

Great review. I’ve been looking at one of these for my huawei phone. I think you use your voice commands on the cardio pack talk for your navigation on google maps instead of touching the screen which is a great feature. Keep up the good work. 👍

Oooh that's a good idea. For some reason I hadn't thought of using Google Assistant to sort out Google Maps. I'll have to try that - thanks!!!

Good stuff - very interesting alternative to hideously expensive OEM gadgetry and looks very promising but...... android only in this day and age, c'mon ! Loved the washing machine in the background...you need to have words

Thanks Gordon - much appreciated! You can always get a cheap ruggedised Android phone just for this purpose and leave it on the bike. You can then keep your shiny Apple bling cosy in your pocket. In fact Thork Racing also sells an Android tablet too.

This is looking more and more like a realistic alternative to a Garmin Zumo. My biggest obstable now is finding a reasonably priced rugged smart phone that checks all the boxes that works with an inductive charging cradle as well as a good, easy to use navigation app that can be used in both a windows and android environment.

Was the joy stick issue related to the touch screen? I noticed that the new model has a touchscreen disable function as a dedicated button on the controller.

Great solution and video. I want to go the same way, and just got a second hand Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 of eBay and a hardwired Ram mount EZ-Roll Tabletholder - it is a bigger solution, so I will need to rearrange the cockpit to make space :-)

Thanks. I thought the controller only worked with the carpe tablet. Clearly not. Do you know what devices is compatible with?

Any Android phone/tablet after Android 7.1 with Bluetooth I think. Does NOT work with Apple devices. Worth checking on their website.

Those are Rukka Virium ones, but quite an old version and I think now discontinued. The silvery touch sensitive material on the fingertips is totally useless, otherwise they are nice gloves.

Just getting going with this now having added switched USB power to my VFR (have it on my Tiger Explorer already) and just got a suitable waterproof case. Sadly it looks like the controller you demo is no more. They have a new one coming (on pre-order) which I'm sure will be great, but looks like it is a permanent fit on the bars and hardwired for power. So no swapping between bikes.

Can you not use your comms to do a search for you (hey Google) directions to coffee shop etc etc.

That is possible but you tend to get very weird results sometimes.

Does it click freely in all 4 direftions? Mine is nice up,left down but right takes much more effort.?

Yeah it’s ok left and right on mine. On reflection it could do with a bigger joystick with a more positive engagement.

Thanks for the video! Can you show us how it works with a Roadbook app? Beside scrolling the "pdf" up & down, can you change the km up & down without touching the smartphone?

I haven’t paid for the roadbook functionality (I don’t use roadbooks myself) so sorry about that.

@@beardedbaldbikers4634 I was more focused on external apps such as Rabbit Roadbook. You can download a sample roadbook pdf and put it on the app. Can you give it a try? Thanks!

Good question - I haven’t tried that. I usually do a long-press of the button on my Cardo unit to trigger a voice assistant on the phone.

Yes, it runs from the phone’s GPS.
