How do you like to navigate? There's paper maps, turn by turn Garmin devices and there is Drivemode dashboard 2. Which one is the best?
It all depends on your own preferences, and for you to decide I have made this video showing what I use.
You find DMD2 here www.drivemodedashboard.com/
Handlebar controllers www.thorkracing.com/carpe-nav...
The Carpe Iter pad www.thorkracing.com/carpe-nav...
Seymors rugged Doogee phone doogeemall.com/en-se/collecti...
The OBD link amzn.to/3HF1CLH
Note, the OBD dongle is a standard 16 pin connector. You need an adapter cable from 16 pin to what ever connector your bike has. The Tenere 700 has a 4 pin connector for the older models and 6 pin connector for the newer, so make sure you check what you have.

Great intro, Robert, and I hope it gives Garmin a wake-up call. That being said, I also have My Route App, which is also up there with the latest developments. I will, however, carry on with my 'old fashion' XT because all I really need is a map and direction to follow. The rest with all the buttons could be too distracting from enjoying the ride and views. Very interesting, though, and thank you for a great presentation.

For many years, I used a Ule ruggedized mobile just for navigation on motorcycles. It worked well with predownloaded maps, IP68. Connected to my motorcycle battery. But it was just a ruggedized mobile. Washelpfull, till it fell off from the RAM mount, and realize only when I stopped. This seems great product to have. I have picked up a Tomtom and have been using it ever since.

So funny this inro! Great video, like most of yours! I have been a 'hardcore' Garmin user since before mobile phones appeared, bought my first GPSII I think ik 1998. This (and some other) video has finally pulled me over the line to get out there and try a tablet for navigation. If even just for the fun of it. I'm sure that your video will make Garmin realise they need to 'move with the wind' a little and get that stick out of their.. So thank you for making the step smaller 🙂 Jeroen

Great intro, Robert. And outro with the "real" oohh! We should try that with Frankonian beer. What is important for me riding offroad is a digital map that's crystal-clear and easy to read in a nanosecond. I have Garmin 390 trackmode and the Czech Mapsource navigator on a rugged Chinese Android smartphone, so two systems at a glance. But your DMD app coupled with a large screen looks much better. Food for thought. Thanks for your ideas, Günter/Nürnberg

For many years I have been using a Garmin 590LM, coupled with Garmin VirbXE cameras. Although one can only pair one camera at a time, I had the ability to control the camera from the GPS unit. This makes it much easier to poke a button on the screen to take an image or start a video. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, and I "upgraded" to a Garmin XT2. I was extremely disappointed to learn that since Garmin discontinued their Virb camera line, with the exception of their backup cameras, deleted camera control from the XT series. As a part time RU-vidr, I relied on camera control to produce my videos.

I am a fan of this system but I got a unit with some hardware problems. You find out about a company when there are problems. I'm genuinely pleased to report that my first problem was fixed quickly. My biggest problem was sending the unit back as I live in Brexitainia. I had to send it back a second time and the Czech company said they'd send me a new one as I really didn't trust the device anymore. I'm happy to say this company, both in Portugal and Czech Republic are decent and honourable. They're also pretty responsive when there is a problem so my takeaway is this. A good system from a decent company. I had a bit of a crappy unit and the backup was honest and honourable.

Very, very good Robert, your production, story line and content are seriously good. Well done mate. 👍 Seriously though, I’m a Garmin XT user, what I’d like is Garmin to bring out a handlebar controller, so you can use it without taking your hands off the handle bars! I really like the entusiasm and the work you put in to this. A great ambassador for the product. I have followed the development more or less since the start, and bought the lifetime access and controllers. And how much I really like to like it I am so far quite disappointed about the map it offers. Very lacking and not much help offroad. I always go back to locus where I can use topographical maps from lantmateriet in sweden and CNIG in Spain. I use the DMD/2 as a main screen on my mounted tablet. It is a nice main screen for bikes for sure, helpful to get a overview and easy access to the other applications. But for me the type of tablet and the maps I can use are more important. So I always start and navigate through the locus map, there is just so much better setup and user friendly. I know about the restrictions of the map use and that is why DMD uses the free maps. But if it could have an option to load your own offline maps it would be a whole package. Lets see in the future. Keep up the good work and ride safe.

On roadbook I have scroll and trip meter controls on the left so I don't need right side often. On maps I need to use both sides, but mainly left.

Awesome video Robert, thanks for sharing. Question please, is the device & software only for off-road use or can it be used on normal road touring, like google maps, for example, also do you know if they will release any version for iOS. Thanks again. 👍👍
@NomadSweden
@NomadSweden Год назад
Thanks! You don't have to get the DMD2 map. You can use any navigation app from the app store and 20 of them works with the controllers too. I use Google maps and Guru Maps sometimes. I doubt there will be an iOS version soon since it's very restictive in what you can do as a developer. Just like Garmin :D

@@NomadSweden Love the video! For us iOS users can’t we just hotspot an android device to iPhone? Sure there would be real time delays for some information but at least on road downloads would be available while not on Wi-Fi. Mounting a $250 doogee tethered to my phone sounds like a good option to me.

Nomaden, tech nerd you are! And I am too. I'm trying to find a decent android for bike use with DMD2. Thinking about the Ulefone Armor X10, which is quite cheap, and hopefully capable of navigation.

a perfect Video 🔥🔥🔥 the funny introduction hits the topic exactly: what do you need today to navigate - not just on the road, but for example the TET or a road book tour? I've also been using the CAPEITER for a long time - and with varying degrees of success. A few years ago, during the Hard Alpi Tour, the Bluetooth connection broke down and the device was dead. The problems associated with the power supply and the Android operating system have not yet been solved with the M8 connector either. Very annoying if you rely on it alone... And you have to give Garmin credit for that: the devices are very stable. I would never use an electronic road book in a rally, for example - and I'm not alone: paper is still used at the DAKAR! I'm curious to see which player will bring hardware that runs as stable as Garmin and includes the functionality of DMD2.
@NomadSweden
@NomadSweden Год назад
Indeed, stable and limited also means stable. Dakar is moving to digital roadbooks so the progress will go on. But of course on special devices I'm sure.

Thanks for the video and the "Africa bit". With the Carpe Iter set with controllers and the touch disabled, if you take it off its mount, does it fall back on touch control automatically to use it as a normal tablet?
@NomadSweden
@NomadSweden Год назад
If you disable touch you need to enable it again before you release it. If i forget that and leave the bike i just restart the tablet and touch is back on

Hahaha love the intro Tjommi, and that is spot on. It is really time GARMIN takes this stuff serious. I think GARMIN is the simple and easy solution, and you know exactly what you got, or maybe surprised you don’t get more. Either way, for navigation on road and down in the big city’s, I have had great help in GARMIN. But i really need to take a closer look at this option for future adventures. Can’t you just switch to google maps to get directions? Really well made video that explained a lot of the questions i had about it. The controllers look great when you learn where everything is. Hahaha, i will promise to learn you the proper Ååååhh, if you teach me how to trow up the tent 🏕️😂 😂 Cheers

First, let me say, you guys are very good. I have watched a few videos on your trips and I love it. Also a thank you for all the information you gather and share with the rest of us. I have a Garmin XT and the only reason I bought it was because of the screen brightness. Using the phone for sometime it pissed me off when I needed to look at the map and couldn't se a thing during the day. My question is... which screen is brighter during day light and direct sunlight? Garmin Zumo XT or the Caper Iter Pad? If they are at least the same, I will change my setup to the Caper Iter because Garmin sux. Planing a trip is a pain and most of the time it does not find the address I need, at least not in Portugal where I'm from. Any information on this comparison would be appreciated.

Hello, great video! I wanted to ask, how the DOGEE phone performs while riding... Is the display still readable when it's bright outside? I myself have bought a realme 8 for Navigation because it's got a big and very bright (1000nits) screen but even that is barely enough under direct sunlight.

Garmin XT has the unique advantage, at least so far, the display works with motorcycle gloves, plus the brightness in the sun. For me, it would be a maximum advantage to use this display with an application like DMD2. Maybe the possibility to resoft the Garmin XT with DMD2...

Interesting, I had thus far not heard of this app in the US (on X off road is the nav app we hear about here). That said the requirements I have here in Alaska would still favor my Garmin Montana 700i, as it connects to 2 GPS satellite systems, and the Inreach satellite communication network. We have very limited communication infrastructure in Alaska, so calling in for help in a bad situation, or encountering another rider or off roader (Jeep/side by side/quad/etc) in a bad situation is pretty critical if there is an emergency and we need to call in for Medivac for oneself or someone else. And having access to GPS satellites is important for accurate coordinates to send the Medivac team for said emergency's. I have found it more accurate than phone system GPS out in the bush (wilderness).

The Carpe Iter tablet and many other Android devices can connect to those same satellites...the only benefit of the Montana 700i is the inreach capabilities except it's a bad idea to have your SATCOM attached to your bike...
