Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

Just to clarify this is unconfirmed. I'm basing this purely off of Richard Osmund and "The Rest is Entertainment" podcast.

Before he became a presenter on Pointless, etc, Richard Osman was a producer on programmes including Deal or No Deal. Then an executive director. He knows TV inside and out. I would trust his perception and judgement absolutely

By "the post office drama", I assume you mean "Mr. Banks vs. the Post Office"? I'm so sorry to hear that lost money. I'm in the US, and my husband and I just watched it (via Amazon with the PBS subscription). The only reason we decided to check it out was Toby Jones - I don't think I've ever not liked anything he's been in - but I'm so glad we did because it was excellent. I'd encourage other Americans to give it a watch if possible.

I think like you say Tharries, that this is sad inditement of the state the County is now in. When the show came back in 2005, it reflected the mood of the Country, ambitious and forward looking. Nearly twenty years later and we are Virtually bankrupt and havs to rely money from elsewhere.

Rights control and contracts and all the background stuff always worries me in regard to my favourite franchises. I think back to when Steven Moffat revealed recently that he had 0 Doctors contracted for the 50th Anniversary and all they had was Jenna Coleman until it was almost too late

The Rights to cinematic Spiderman are a mess. I may be wrong but I believe a long term movie Rights deal was signed with Sony long before Marvel was purchased by Disney. There is now a degree of co-operation between Sony and Disney/Marvel but it is quite limited. A similar mess existed with Dare Devil, Jessica Jones etc, which were made for Netflix. Those Rights have only in recent years reverted and those series I believe are now available on D+.

The difference between Netflix and Sony was that Netflix only owned distribution right for an extended period of time. Sony owns the exclusive rights to make spider-Man unless Sony gets bought

Interesting Tharries. Thanks for sharing this. Of course this is just hearsay from a commentator which he doesn’t himself cite his sources for saying that so not of course fact “what rights” exactly the BBc have supposedly handed over or whether like a movie deal the rights go back to the been after x number of years. Hence why they had to wait for the 2005 series after they did that previously.

Most things media wise in the UK generally arent funded by the UK alone, this isnt a bad thing, the bbc now needs the show than the show needs the bbc. And thats just where oeople are going, people prefer uninterrupted streaming and watching shows whenever they want, TV shows made for that purpose are some of the best as they can be more creative, showsnlike invincible, daredevil and jessica jones are evident of this.

Universal own the TV Movie content because it was an Universal Television/BBC co-production. Fox was just the network it was distributed/aired on. Similar to 'Batman: The Animated Series' airing on Fox Kids in the US when that came out, but Warner Bros own the series because WB Television produced it, or Amazon distributing the upcoming "Batman: Caped Crusader" series but Warner own it.

Cast your mind back the McGann movie. Fox in the US had certain Rights to that production and any subsequent series for a limited period, say 4 years. Had that been a success a new Rights deal would no doubt have been negotiated for another fixed period and so on. As it was, the movie didn't work out and after a few years the Rights lapsed and control reverted to the BBC. Obviously certain elements such as characters created specifically for the movie (Grace, Chang Lee etc) reverted to their orignator(s) and are outside the control of the BBC. This is possibly why Big Finish are free to use actor Eric Roberts as the Master but never reference Bruce the ambulance driver. There's nothing to suggest the BBC hasn't negotiated similar Rights deals this time. They would have been extremely foolish to permanently transfer Rights to one of their biggest unique franchaises. In fact it would be suicide for the BBC. If they ever had a disagreement with either Bad Wolf and/or Disney they risk being stuck in a situation where noone is prepared to co-operate to make a new show or that each side goes off to make their own competing show, based on the elements each owned separately. It's most likely then a limited time deal is in place that can be renewed if all partners agree.

The sharing Spider-Man deal is a lot less civil than this, all parties seem to want the same thing here, with Spider-Man, theres so much division in what is wanted, they cant make their minds up.

Bad Wolf has been in charge of Doctor Who for years, if you look at who works there it's basically the RTD1 crew. Not sure if you watch @MrTardis but he recently explained how skint the British T.V. industry is as well as the rest of the country. :( Btw the incredible @Christel Dee gave you a shout out the other day. :) On a personal note any chance you can turn your intro down just a tad, I'm ancient and it scares the bleep out of me if I'm not fast enough to turn it down.

You don't just "give" away rights to another entity. There is no such thing in commerical contracts and transactions. If BBC needs additional funding to make the show, then all it can do is to sell its rights (whole or partial) to a financier

The viewing figures for the first 2 episodes aren't in yet
@RRR3000gaming
@RRR3000gaming 2 месяца назад
@@SnowLily06 Viewing figures aren't in period. Disney+ infamously does not share viewership information. They sometimes will put out a tweet if a (Marvel/StarWars) flagship release does particularly well ("[series] reached 10m views in a day!" type thing) but longterm numbers and numbers for most releases are not shared. There are third parties releasing this information, but it's all based on guess work and can differ wildly between parties (hence why so often it's possible to find numbers that fit a narrative). It's also pretty much useless, because different streaming services count their views differently. Some go by minutes watched - giving longer movies and series an automatic win even with fewer viewers - and some go by amount of people watching. That second categorie can be further split into some services counting any view, even if clicked off in seconds, versus other services only counting if the entire episode is watched. Others again will count it double if you rewatch, and some will only count that once. This is also how for example Twitter and TikTok give the illusion of larger viewer counts.

Who are the BBC to give away rights (any rights) to a privately owned production company? The the peoples of the UK are the owners of Doctor Who, the BBC just hold it in our name. Our license fee money pays for Doctor Who and has done since 1963.

If that were true, we'd all be getting money back from the profits. The rights around Doctor Who properties have always been complicated, more so in the early years, but you were never part of it. If anyone thinks that RTD is still in charge,you need to WAKE UP. Bad Wolf aren't calling it,it is abundantly clear that DISNEY are by the poor standard of The Devil's Chord (am I the only one that thought the episode was a pile of crap?!) New Who as we knew it (2005-now) is dead. Feels like the 1989 series with Sylvester McCoy's era and the BBC putting it on hiatus. We're heading there again.
@peterd788
@peterd788 2 месяца назад
The BBC is not really involved in Doctor Who (2023 - ). It's a Disney commission from Bad Wolf and the BBC gets free episodes in the UK and Ireland. The rights will revert to the BBC when Bad Wolf can't afford the rental fee of the brand. RTD has conned Bad Wolf that he knows how to make the rights commercially exploitable but Disney will drop this like a stone. The 40 million figure is what the BBC used to make at its height. If Bad Wolf makes a success of this it will make them money but Bad Wolf, clearly, can't make money out of this with RTD in charge. The show will be cancelled by Disney shortly after the second series is streamed and there will be no other takers for it. BBC TV wasn't willing to put in a single penny into this but were happy to get free episodes. The show will be rested and some years later the BBC might resurrect it. It's a standard IP play just like Superman 1978. Warner got the rights back.
