Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

@WhoShorts_ That's true. Herron and Redman wrote the episode, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was a direct reference to Ncuti's wishes. Who knows, maybe his agent insisted they put a bit in one of the episodes! Sounds like a good agent in any case! Ncuti gave two tall orders, and purely based on results, it looks like they pretty much delivered on both!

He's more like a River Song type character to me. After I saw the trailer I thought he was gonna be a Captain Jack type character. Now after seeing the episode, it just feels like a good mix between both Captain Jack and River Song. More-so River, because the Doctor clearly has feelings for him, nearly married the guy, and the fact that he's lost in another dimension is obviously setting up a character arc that feels quite similar to River Song.

What if this "Boss" is actually "The Boss" from the story The Green Death. RTD did mention that a secret from Pertwee's run is hiding somewhere in UNIT and will be revealed in the finale. The BBC really overplayed their hand on this one in the synopsis. The Doctor's life "changes forever"? In what conceivable way? I thought maybe Rogue was aware of the Doctor's original (pre Timelord) species or something, instead A guy he's known for a few hours disappears? I agree, my very first thought when I finished watching was finally, an episode that actually feels like good ol' NuWho! It wasn't anything groundbreaking, but it still had everything I could want from a good DW story - It was fun and camp, yet emotional at times; great setting, cool uncomplicated monsters, awesome character moments. I feel like I finally got a chance to actually get to know Ruby and 15 better as people, and see what they're actually like on a run-in-the-mill type of adventure. The Doctor felt more like the Doctor here than he did in many of the previous stories imo, and Ruby finally showed some real agency as a companion (she also did in 73 yards and Boom, but there she didn't really have a choice but to be separated from the Doctor; I liked that in this case, they just decided to split and she actually chose to do her own thing). I do wish it would have happened much earlier in the season, but better late then never I suppose lol :) I do get what you mean about the Doctor and Ruby's relationship, I felt the same when he called her his best friend.. And this was exactly my fear when they had the time jump in episode 2 of the season. But I did love their scene at the end, and the moments we did get with them together.. And as I've said I didn't mind them being separated for most of the episode, I just wish we've seen their relationship build more gradually throughout the season as you've said. I did love the chemistry between Ncuti and Jonathan Groff, and his character was really interesting (Yeah, similar to Captain Jack in many aspects, but I personally didn't mind it at all), so I hope he comes back in the future! But even if we don't get to see him again, it was a great choice of guest star and a very cool dynamic to watch unfold. I especially loved the scene where they danced, and how they used the homophobia of the era in their favour (and YES! The Doctor's reaction to the proposal was very intriguing). I still have to think it over a bit more, but my initial take on first viewing alone, is to give this episode about an 8/10. My only, very tiny gripe tbh, is how quickly the Doctor believed Ruby was actually gone. I mean, I liked Ruby's side of it, using the earring's previously established combat-mode and "cosplaying" was very clever on her part and I can totally believe it worked. It was also well established that the creatures don't identify each other very quickly so I can even buy them not clocking her. However, personally, since all the Chuldur were in bird-form, and she was the only one that wasn't, I immediately assumed it was actually the real Ruby. When the Doctor ran off, I expected him to go search for her body, to want to verify that she's actually dead before he rains down hell on them.. But instead he just went away to cry, which was a bit disappointing tbh. I'm not one of those people who has a problem with him crying in every episode, I think that's a nice character trait for 15; he's emotional and wears his heart(s) on his sleeve and that's cool. I just didn't like how quickly he accepted it without even checking - and even if he did believe it and just felt like crying, I don't get why he had to go off to the side to do so. I doubt he'd be the kind of character who cares about other people seeing him cry, that's such a human male-ego type of trait that doesn't fit the Doctor imo, but oh well.

Another episode that needs a second watch for me I think. So far I think it's a pretty standard episode and I'd probably rank it below 73 Yards, Dot and Bubble, Boom and the Devil's Chord. I will say though I do think the romance was a little too rushed and a bit unnecessary imo since I’m still a fan of keeping the Doctor largely asexual. But you have this big moment with the Doctor losing Rogue at the end and we as an audience haven’t even known the character for an hour and even for the Doctor it must’ve been a couple of hours tops. I think it would have been far more effective if Rogue had been with us from earlier in the season like episode 1 or 2.

I expected The Doctor to get very agitated upon learning the threat and being stuck unable to make sure Ruby is safe but he was focused on Rogue mostly. I'm not disagreeing with you but it is worth noting this series seems to have a lot of timeskips so it could've been a while since Boom. Also the doctor has kinda always been like this. Immediately after that she got hunted down by robot Santas and stuck on a spaceship of aliens trying to kill her. Immediately after all of that danger where she almost died multiple times he takes her to new earth and leaves her alone while he goes upstairs.

People who make a big issue about the crying. The crying makes sense this is a doctor who was rid of all his past trauma. So it’s basically like he’s experiencing all this heartbreak and all these emotions again. The past doctors had seen so much death and destruction they just became more numb to things Hence the less crying. I think this is intentional by RTD for that exact reason.

Gay or straight shouldn't come into it. If you wanted to you could interpret Doctors 2 -7 as Gay or Straight it didn't matter they were whoever you wanted them to be for you. Children ( and adults) could identify with them as they saw fit. ps I didn't include The First Doctor as he was clearly written as "Grandfather" figure and Doctors Number 8 onwards are less ambiguous depending on the writers

On the development of the Doctor and Ruby's relationship: Not the fault of any episode in particular but more the season overall - The Devil's Chord establishes a 6 month time skip between it and Space Babies. And at the beginning of 73 Yards (which seems to be set in Ruby's present given how the rest of the episode unfolds) it looks like winter weather (then again I'm not familiar with the climate of Wales, maybe the Welsh have particular cold summers?); so I suppose that would indicated a few more months since The Devil's Chord. So it looks like the Doctor and Ruby could have been travelling with each other for nearly a year at this point.

The eight episode season has been too short to allow the Doctor and Ruby to build rapport sufficiently, and with two Doctor-lite episodes I still don't know who the 15th Doctor really is. The episodes have been very tonally different and the stories come across as first drafts rather than completed scripts. Pertwee was my first Doctor and in fairness I haven't enjoyed every incarnation, but have stuck with Who up until now, although Jodie's incarnation pushed me towards calling it a day. I appreciate that RTD brought the programme back after such a long hiatus, but the direction that Chibnall took the programme in and the doubling down on that direction that RTD has continued with comes across as being simply antagonistic towards older fans. For me the rot really set in with the 60th anniversary specials not featuring cameos of other Doctors and companions together with references of the programme's long history.

The connection was there but not amazing. The connection was fantastic by the ninth or 10th episode but then the entire episode was based on those two people these days it’s more what’s going on and then fitting into the situation, I don’t think Doctor Who is designed for a episode.
