@Poodz_
@Poodz_ Год назад
In Australia (NSW at least) You are supposed to drive 120 hours before you can even attempt the test. Perhaps this is a bit much, and a hassle for parents or partners who need to take up a lot of the teaching responsibilities, but the pass rate is much, much higher on what is essentially the same test. For certain, me and my friends were all better drivers than the people I know here in England who have just passed their tests with probably only 20-30 hours under their belts. The main thing causing us danger was more our stupidity and risk taking, rather than our incompetence.
@IndiBrony

I got a student just two weeks ago; she'd been learning through a friend. She told me on Thursday that her test is on Monday. I told her straight up that because she's not at the standard *I* think she should be at to pass her test that I wouldn't be taking her. ...so she's doing it in her own car. I feel for the examiners who have to go into someone's personal car with no dual controls, having zero clue of their standards before going on the road. At least a licensed instructor should be providing learners who are competent, but with people who come of their own volition could have had literally no time behind the wheel and put the examiner's life in their own hands.
@picklestheswift

@@IndiBrony yes, my instructor once had a student who's Mum kept on moving his test further forward and she hadn't actually taught him all the manoeuvres! One of the best pieces of advice I was given by my late dad regarding my driving lessons was this; take the test when you *think you* are ready. I was probably ready to take my test long before I thought I was. This was back in 2012 and passed first time that year.

Conducted yourself really well in this little interview. Awesome that you got to do this in the studio this time Ashley! I must say I don't find the rise in fraudulent testing surprising. I started learning to drive at the back end of 2020, and with the immense wait times, and the added pressure of failing, and then having to wait for months for another test date, I definitely fell into the "I just want this over with" mentality. I had been learning to drive for more than a year and was confident. It was just doing that test. I was thankfully able to pass earlier this year but I could definitely see a lot of people doing whatever it takes to get through that test to just be on the road.

I did my driving lessons earlier in 2023. I lived in Folkestone at the time. My theory was in January 2023, I then booked my practical. The earliest date was September 2023! If it wasn’t for the apps available, I wouldn’t have been able to get earlier booking - in the end I was fortunate to get a last minute cancellation in May 2023! The waiting list and wait time for exams was ludicrous. It needs a major overhaul as the DVLA are clearly incompetent at managing the process efficiently.

I passed 2nd time with 2 minors. however i didnt wait 4 months for the 2nd test. I managed to get another test within 3 weeks using cancellation apps. For fraud maybe take away the use own car option so that the instructor has to bring you, this will cut out alot of the fraud as now the instructor can be held liable for the fraud also. Instructors will have to charge the minimum fee obvs for their time but in the grand scheme. Most people have their instructors bring them to the test center anyway, so jst make it mandatory.

There needs to be a huge uplift in testing because in my opinion the so-called qualified drivers should be retested at regular intervals. There should be a ten or even five year mandatory retest requirement plus any accidents or offences should trigger an immediate retest requirement. I get it that there is a shortage of instructors and testers but safety on the road and addressing the collapse in standards of driving with ever-congested roads needs seriously addressing. Driving is a privilege, not an entitlement.

I was a driving instructor in the late eighties/early nineties and these things were issues back then. Especially the people who wanted to take the test too early. I refused to take a few for precisely that reason. These days, I teach motorcycles. It works a little differently as the instructor taking someone to test isn't necessarily the same one who taught them, as we have to be licenced though a school, not as individuals. It is the school that then faces reputational damage if people are consistently not ready.

@owen9461 Год назад
Hi Tony, I hope you're well. I know I am not Ash but I thought I'd offer my two cents. I can't offer advice on lessons, but for actually locking in a practical test, I personally used a driving cancellation app to book particular dates at the test center I wanted automatically, which allowed me to pass my own test under similar circumstances where I really had to or would not be able to for quite some time. I did go for one test, which I narrowly failed, however I personally found I needed that to happen to chill out about it and smashed my second test a month later with a cancellation. This happened about a year ago when things were even more backed up, so I would think it still might be a useful shout. Definitely I would advise him to go for a test when he is ready and he has an instructor who will agree and who he trusts. He may have some issues with instructor availability, so others may have to offer guidance there for Peterborough. I personally passed purely through lessons as I had no one to take me out, I am sure that availability would be less of an issue if he could take regular lessons and supplement those with private practice derived from what he does on his lessons (avoids bad practice & habits). I hope he is successful - take a look at cancellation apps for test dates, or he will be waiting months and months,

It's like where's the sense in allowing people to jump straight into learning class 1 before they've even sat in a class 2? I was speaking to some of the trainers of one provider a while ago and they had a number of people that wanted to jump straight in at class 1 as their companies would only pay for that aspect of it. And they were there for a lot longer than they should have been. Any competent driver can pass a class 2 after a week of learning. But for a class 1 it'll take months if you're not familiar with larger vehicles. It's just taking up more instructor time.

You are absolutely correct! Hopefully this will never happen to you, but consider that in a frontal impact, an average car provides 500mm of distance From first detection of an impact to seatbelt tensioners and airbags deploying etc there is in electrical terms quite a bit of time. The engineers also have "lots" of space to add in every bit of absorbency they can think off. Now consider a side impact, from the detection to the passenger you may be looking at 100/150mm of distance, and things happen harder and faster. And the engineers have fewer options to protect the passengers. Take your time turning right. Do you know that in the US UPS trucks are actually routed to avoid the left turn for the reason of avoiding the most serious type of impact? Hesitation is also an unfair one in my book, in many situations a second look can be invaluable. Good luck, drive safe and never ever stop learning.

This is quite interesting in a couple of ways. Firstly, as someone who cycles, I've noticed a lot of talk lately of mandatory testing, number plates and insurance for cyclists. However, as with everything else in terms of motorists requirements, if the testing process cannot even be run without fraud, what chance will testing of cyclists have? Secondly, I firmly believe that one test isn't enough for x amount of decades of driving without further knowledge updates or re-tests. The standard of driving in this country is quite appalling at times. Is one test really enough? How do bad habits get ironed out if its one test and that's it? Thirdly, it's a shame the culture in this country doesn't lead to people choosing alternative methods of travel, such as active travel and public transport. If we had better active travel infrastructure and better, more affordable and efficient public transport people wouldn't need to feel pressured to pass their driving test to get to places.

I did not teach my son to drive. I left that to an authorised instructor because my own learning was decades before. What I did do, though, was to sit with him so that he could get in hours of practice to reinforce the lessons learned. However, in many ways it was harder than driving myself because I had to concentrate on concentrating. It was important that I did, too. One young cyclist probably owes his life to me shouting "STOP" when I saw he was about to shoot out in front of us. It would have been entirely his fault but that would have been no consolation to us. So think carefully before agreeing to sit with a learner and if your attention wanders stop driving and go for a cup of tea.

The test system is corrupt anyway the pass rate has remained around 49% for the past 20 years.They pass people based on if they have met the quota for that day.They can't let everyone who is able to pass,pass as this would create gridlock on the roads.

Funniest thing is with how complacent some full license holders are and how many bad habits they don't even realise theyve developed. i bet lots of times they take the test on someones behalf and fail.

I feel a really good way to prevent this is probably too add like a chip or something similar to bus passes but instead it is used to verify if the driving licence is real ik what your thinking but ppl are buying these fraudulent driving licences true but what's stopping the police to use a machine to verify if it's real or not?

I'm from Australia but we have the same issue, I did my 100 hours of driving (required driving hours before being eligible for the test in Qld Australia) and wasn't able to get a test for 2 more month, when I did the test and only just failed, I had to wait another 4 months for another test and I did not practice between until like the last week and my driving ability significantly fell, thankfully I passed the second one but it was a very long wait after already doing hours of driving before hand, I can see why you'd try and fraudulent get a pass with these waiting times

I nearly got turned away from my theory in 2005 as my licence photo had me with a shaved head and I actually had grown my hair quite long. It was only the fact that my ears stick out that they could match the photo to me.

My daughter has an alternative problem She is more than ready for her test. Been driving for over a year, but can't take her test due to theory test. Something needs to be done to ensure that those who struggle with formal written test can be helped. She knows it, passes the hazard perception with flying colours, but the multiple choice, with subtle word changes indicating correct answer is problematic (she is EAL her first language wasn't English) But, friends have passed the test, and some I have been in a car with, and they have never driven down a country road before, and we live in a very rural area, but all lessons and tests were in nearby town, so they went straight down A road, never on bendy country lanes or single track roads.

The DVSA offers an audio version of the test, where the questions are read-out, over headphones. Would that help your daughter? There are stronger anti-cheat checks for that, as people were cheating, by using a wireless earphone, so that an assistant could hear the questions and tell them the answers.

I didnt even know this was a thing but i can see why people do it. They could get someone to take the test for them because they are nervous on tests, the peer pressure to pass, job opportunities. I dont agree with it but can understand in some scenarios where people will turn to fraudulent test. Also more needs to be done on the standards of drivers.

failed my test because I couldn't find the headlight button (not knob at the end of the indicator like every other car on the planet) in my instructor's car and swerved, it was like an ego thing that I couldn't not know that. Agh. Been waiting 4 months now, my test is next month

@homie3461 I also didn't sleep the night before and was ill so kinda couldn't make judgement calls very well, the stress of knowing this was the only shot I had for the next half a year or so really didn't help. God knows why I didn't just take my test in my mum's car and just buy a second rear view mirror, I'm so good at driving that compared to my instructors ridiculously large Mercedes

The driving learner and test industry is a case to fail imo. You now have to pass s theory test, my 1st & 2nd tests didn't have that, i tried twice to pass twice but failed on the third yet passed the theory but failed the 3rd practical. Yet have exceptional road awareness experience having cycled for 30yrs. Yet the government elevated cycling up the order of importance on the transport network. Id also like to see camera'd cars, filmed testers as well as dashcams, as some testers aren't brilliant! The last guy was talking to me about my job pulling my attention from the driving test.. ;/

Ok ,I will come clean. I got a full licence in 1979 but in 1989 I got done for speeding . Just entered a 30mph zone from a national speed limit road, going at 45 mph and got caught by an unmarked car and got 3 penalty points. Got them removed 3 years later and a new licence issued ,still without a photo, in 1992. Kept that one clean so far 🙄
