BBC Documentary on Rebetika Part 1 

While living in Athens in the 90's I was taken to a tiny, upstairs taverna kind of place and there were a bunch of older, older men playing rembetika with younger new Greek musicians learning the music craft. It was absolutely transcending.

yes it is the blues of greece, be glad outsiders saw the amazing music and decided to make a documentary.

rebetika is something that cannot be one hudred present translated in another language something that nobady can understand like greeks ...

be glad someone from the outside saw the amazing music. and its true that new york, new Orleans, Alabama, florida etc. were the first recordings of rebetika since they were outlawed in greece.

Thank you so much, Rembetiko was the first movie I watched in Greek, and I loved it. I am also the hugest Anthony Quinn fan so to find this doco of the two together is fantastic!!

BS! The first recording of Rebetika were in the early 1920's, both before and during the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1923. These early recording were the very first recorded songs on earth to mention Marijuana.

thanks for posting this great documentary, it would be appreciated to know the year of production, wonderful music and musicians and historical background, though it temporarily falls into cheap orientalism when mentioning turkish roots in a later episode. but that was then, and now is now...
