Yes, I well remember - before watching the race here - that Rodrigo de Triano finished 4th. The Epsom Derby had knocked him back a bit, and on this day he hadn't yet fully recovered. But of course after this he bounced back to have two superb victories over 10f in the Juddmonte International and Champion Stakes. I was at York the day he won the Juddmonte, and he was a very very good horse that day. Somewhat forgotten these days, but what a very good horse he was.
I know I go on about how bad O’Sullivan was as a commentator , but this race is THE perfect example ! He was SO fixated on Rodrigo de Triano that he didn’t even mention the eventual winner till the shadow of the post .. shocking commentary! … anyhoo 😅 The Kentucky Derby was written off as just a bad day at the office for Arazi.. this was the day the bubble burst totally and it became obvious he just hadn’t trained on as they would’ve liked , but what a 2yo !! 👍🏴
Peter O'Sullevan had it the wrong way around here and Kooyonga should only have kept the second race if Young Buster had got second in the photo finish. Kooyonga was the best horse on the day and Young Buster was never going to finish better than second but he would have finished there but for the interference from Kooyonga, whose jockey used his whip in the wrong hand and did little until it was too late to try to straighten her once she started drifting. So the only way to ensure that Young Buster ended up finishing second was to place Kooyonga third, unfortunately. These days the result probably would have stood because stewards today think that 'the result' is the winner only, so they never take into account bets like forecasts, each way, placepots and AvB.
I remember this well , I had that big tail swishing hoor Perpendicular E/W . BTW O’Sullivan was wrong AGAIN .. Young Buster finishing 3rd in the photo didn’t lessen in any way the possibility of Kooyonga losing the race , big Div that he was . If interference had taken place Kooyonga would’ve been placed either behind Young Buster or placed last , which meant my Hail Mary on Perpendicular would’ve been a story I’d still be waffling about 30 years later 🤣… Hang on !.. I AM still waffling about it 😝 👍🏴
i remember backing perpendicular 25/1 thought it was a steal, kooyonga loved getting disqualified at ascot as won a good bet on rock hopper one day kooyonga won easy then kicked out RH was second then promoted to winner
You won’t be surprised I went off the cliff with Lord Howard’s Rudimentary 🤦♂️.. so I don’t have a horse in the finish , I remember at the time thinking Dettori had fkd that up ! Got himself in a terrible position and had to use up his possible winning run going round the outside of Lahib who was brave to keep going . I SHOULDVE backed Second Set as he was the best horse in the race and I’d have been murderous after the race 😅 👍🏴
