Dirty or desperate to win? I’d argue that many of the best drivers have been dirty at one time or another to try and gain an advantage, Senna, Schumacher, Hamilton, Vettel have all been guilty of it. Only really in the early years I’d argue drivers weren’t as dirty, knowing that a crash, even a small one could spell disaster.
The only three final showdowns we've had since then is 2014 (hardly exciting since all Hamilton had to do was basically finish without any problems), 2016 (a little bit more exciting, but when Rosberg passed Verstappen it was pretty much game over) and 2021 (Very good fight. One of Hamilton's best drives. Shame about the way the last lap was handled but Verstappen was a worthy champion that year). And with the way things currently are, it might be a while before we get the next one. At least Indycar has some good racing, but the stakes just don't feel the same way since it's only an American Championship not "the World Championship".
Can't wait. Hope to see Alonso on pole in wet conditions with Vettel lingering in 5th. Can't see Vettel being that far back though so Alonso will have to hope for an alternator failure or crash.
While I don't think Vettel's the best, he has nothing to be ashamed of. It's not his fault that he's in the best car by a huge margin, and it's not his fault that the tires this year suck, and were changed halfway through the season.
"that didn't work Michael you hit the wrong part"... part of me does no respect Schumacher because of such tactics (including the Damon Hill incident).. Had they been both out here with Villeneuve, Michael would have been champion by a point's margin.
Alonso would have won anyway. He finished the race on the podium. Schumacher had to win with Alonso retiring to win the championship. The real point where Michael lost was the engine failure in Suzuka the round before and his mistake in the Monaco qualifying.
Frankly all this conversation below is nothing more than conjecture, the only way youd know who was best would be to have alonso and vettel (or oher top drivers...) in 100% identical red bulls (or whoever has the best car) for EVERY SINGLE RACE. but you can keep dreaming because Prost vs: senna guarantees that wont ever happen again due to the rivalry and in house fighting. fact is, if your earning points on a consistent basis in F1 nowadays, your a top tier driver, it all depends on the team, the car and the luck surrounding you, that determines your career's fate.
and red bull proved my point with mark webber, a different wing here, a deaf ear from vettel there (team orders) made a big difference in who got the WDC trophies...
by that logic you can say he gave away the 2007 title, he was also robbed in 2012 and could have easily won it in 2010 without his last lap puncture in spain. Hamilton deserved at least one title with Mclaren.
