With Mercedes winning every F1 championship since 2014, it's easy to forget that there were plenty of times in the past when title-winning teams would get it wrong and slip from the top of the mountain. In this video, Glenn Freeman looks back at 10 times this happened, from dominant forces that lost their mojo, to teams that got it right for one year then instantly fell back into the pack.

Mercedes, in it's due diligence, is putting out dominating car after dominating car. At the same time, both Ferrari and Red Bull (the only two teams who can realistically do something about it à la McLaren and Williams vs Ferrari back in the 2000's) have dropped the ball - *hard* in the forme'rs case. Since the FIA doesn't seem to be willing to put some brakes into any of that, as they did before, I might actualy say that we might have to wait until they just get tired and ze germans decide that it's no longer worth it to have an F1 team. Good Lord, I sure hope this isn't the case.

@ParhamAz
@ParhamAz 3 года назад
@@phonicfrog_ No one said the driver alone can win the championships. People who say "It's JUST the car" are totally wrong. The top teams sign drivers who can help them in difficult conditions such as rainy races or when the car has the same pace as the other team. Also Better drivers can help their team more to develop the car, use their own set-ups during the race, and suggesting their own strategies. If that wasn't the case, you wouldn't see Merc paying Hamilton +€47M per year and only give Bottas +€9M. Even in Mclaren he was getting paid more than his teammates, except his debut season.
@phonicfrog_
@phonicfrog_ 3 года назад
@@ParhamAz no arguments that Hamilton is a talented driver. However, it does show that without a decent car - he has been known to falter. He & Button were very close throughout their time together at McLaren. In fact, Button outscored Hamo whilst they were teammates. All of this proves a valid point - some drivers are better extracting the most of their cars & rely less on the car itself.
@ParhamAz
@ParhamAz 3 года назад
@@phonicfrog_ Although excluding 2011, I don't agree that Hamilton and Button were "very close", the points don't show the truth. Bad reliability, pitstops and other factors screwed so many races for him. Without those issues, he could even be world champion in both 2010 and 2012. Btw ANY driver would falter if he doesn't drive a decent car. You saw what Alonso did when he went back to Renault or Mclaren, or Schumacher in Merc. Even tho 2009 was a horrible season for Mclaren, He still won 2 races, took 4 poles and finished 5th with Mclaren on 4th by some miracle. Meanwhile, his teammate didn't even finish on the podium and ended up 12th.

The issue in 1984 wasn't with Brabham, but with BMW, which, for some unexplainable reason, after more than 3 years In F1, and after a successful year winning the championship, managed to drop the ball and become totally unreliable. In a year McLaren had intense fighting between its two drivers, and considering the number of poles Piquet scored, Brabham BMW missed out on the chance for a back to back championship. Ironically, two years later, McLaren did just that, winning its back to back championship with Prost against Piquet, Mansell, and Williams.

It seems interesting to me how the 2009 McLaren and Ferrari scenario might repeat. Imagine if RedBull brings their A-game in 2021 to fight Mercedes for the Championship and both teams are stuck in a title fight to the very end of that season. With budget cap they won't have enough resources to develop both 2021 and 2022 cars simultaneously, which will obviously affect their new regulations-spec car. Therefore, there is a chance for an other, better prepered title contender team. Normally I would say that Toto would not let that happen, beastmode boss he is, but since he is said to be on a verge of leaving his current post, who knows? RedBull is not to sign off as a next year's contender either, they keep developing their 2020 car to better undestand the 2021 project, which is virtually the same car. so who knows? You heard it here first. Love to you all!

Mercedes is a mid field team!!! They completely missed on the new regulations!! Lost in 2021 to Red Bull and now can’t do better than 6th if everyone finished the race.

Imo I don't like the idea of F1 becoming competitive again through Merc leaving. The winning team would have an asterisk next to their title and it would leave a feeling that they won only because Mercedes wasn't there.

@@rodracer4567 i'm serious i dont know if it would be good for F1 if another Team leaves because it's not looking good for Haas and if Mercedes would leave too we would only have 16 drivers witch would be a new record for smallest F1 Grid and who knows if Mercedes would stop makeing engines too (and no new motor supplier would came) we only would have Renault and Ferrari as engine suppliers.

It's 2023 and Mercedes only managed 1 win since the 2021 Abu Dhabi title decider and currently has fewer podium finishes than Fernando Alonso. The only silver lining is they always score points in the races they finish, keeping them ahead of Aston Martin and Ferrari. Meanwhile, Red Bull is now dominating as harder than they have before with Max having a decent chance to beat Vettel's win streak record and Red Bull already equaling McLaren's win streak record.

@Barcelona golden state Who said erased? He said "not always", which even you just said is true And the best drivers tend to get into the best cars. Schumacher is possibly the best of all time, and he normally had good cars. But that was only because of how well he did in Belgium 91, which allowed him to join benneton and win 2 titles, then moved to Ferrari and had only 96 and 05 as average cars

Not sure on the F2005-GA, that car appeared to be a rocket ship but there was something odd going on with the tyres. Either slow and just lasted the race or mega speed but might fail.

Brabham 1982, Benetton 1996, Lotus in 1979. Worst title defence was Alberto Ascari who dominated both 1952, 1953 and failing to score a point in 1954. this was quoted by Clive James on the 1984 review when talking about Nelson Piquet. Also ferrari finished 3rd and 4th in Monaco 2009. i know not where there supposed to be but people forget.

With the new technical directives looming in 2022 with the return of ground effect and F1 engineers/designers typically looking forward towards the next big innovation, what lessons can they learn from the previous era of ground effect cars if any or are the cars too different...? Would love an analysis on what's to be expected from the 2022 cars and how it should compare to the old ones!

McLaren 1992. The writing was on the wall in '91, both championships were close. But for Mansell to wrap up WDC with five races to go and needing a second place tells a lot. Yes, the FW14B was out of this world but the difference between it and MP4-7 was huge.

welp, we're walking into 2022 with a Mercedes that lacks sidepods, and if they're struggling with problems as badly as they say they are, we could be looking at present day Mercedes being added to this list.

- Cooper in 1961, from being dominant with their mid-engined cars in 1960 (Jack Brabham champion again and winning five races in a row) to no victory at all and only one podium with the new engine regulations (from 2.5 l to 1,5 l) and Ferrari finally adopting a mid-engined car - Lotus in 1979, so dominant with the beautiful 79, but failing with the 80 car whereas other teams like Ligier then Williams used the ground effect in a better way.
@dylansmit3883
@dylansmit3883 3 года назад
Lotus 1979 After mastering ground effect with the 78 and 79 they went all out with the extreme Lotus 80. It was simply undrivable and even destroyed its own chassis due to excess downforce. Carlos Reutemann refused to drive it and eventually Mario Andretti gave up on the car as well. Lotus played catch up ever since that season and never won a title again.

New entry at #1: Mercedes-AMG. After 8 long successful seasons for the Brackley-based team winning 8 constructors' championships and 8 driver's championships, Mercedes found itself in a state of total disaster after bringing out what seemed to be an intimidating design with a philosophy very different from the other 9 teams on the grid.

It's interesting to see the parallels between McLaren/Ferrari in 2008/2009 with Mercedes/Red Bull in 2021/2022. Competitive title fight directly before a major rule change leaves the prior title challengers on the back foot. However, it seems that the Red Bull's and Mercedes' issues this year are relatively fixable (Mercedes needing to solve their aero issues and Red Bull needing to make their engines from something other than glass), unlike the fundamental issues that hampered McLaren and Ferrari in 2009.
