Using an original BBC modded VRT/M Reslo ribbon mic, I show you what they've done from original to their specs. Then I'll demonstrate a mod that I did on a basic RBL Reslo to transform it into a great sounding high output mic.
MASK! That's the key! I designed my own motor and crimper but I have trouble with the al. sticking to the crimper but I still get some out. But yeah, a mask... blast. I'm having the same issue with duty for my own stuff, it drives me insane. And that transformer... mother ...
Thanks for reaching out, are you leaving the material sandwiched between the wax/parchment paper when running it through the crimper? It shouldn't stick if you do.
@@micsbyshane need to take more care but it was really breathing that kept catching me out. Now I need to work on the tensioner and magnet positioning.
@@isakrags3804 it depends on the pre-amp you have, if you're going straight into an interface. I would recommend it. Otherwise a pre-amp with good gain would be fine especially with the high output transformer.
@@micsbyshane Hey, ended up getting a dn2 tnt because it has 30db and impedance dial. This goes into my focusrite interface. I'm still getting a very high noise floor though. Now i know that the focusrite preamp sucks but hear me out: The dn2 has a switch between 15db and 30db, and when this is flipped the noise floor is getting amplified aswell. This leads me to believe that either the dn2 is faulty, or the reslo rbl has a high noise level, which is weird. It might have something to do with the fact that the cable is a few meters from the reslo before it goes into the dn2, as the long cable is fixed on the microphone. Do you have any input on this matter? The ribbon inside is stock. - Also wondering, would it be kind of a treason against the vintage microphone aspect if the transformer is replaced? Thank you in advance. Isak
@@isakrags3804 a little test: with the noise audible, hold the mic in your hand and rotate it sideways, if the noise changes, there's some RF in your room. If the noise doesn't change, its the mic. And yes, if the ribbon is bad you will have noise. The stock ribbons tend to oxidize, crack and stretch, almost every single reslo i open, that is the case. The stock transformers are pretty weak as well
