@@cashy0667 I'd be fascinated to see just how they changed it if and when they ever did. The Lowe theme was a radical shift itself 25 years ago. Now it seems easier to imagine the end of the BBC than the end of this theme.

Does TV equipment actually still use those "seconds:frames" timings like the pre-2023 intro does? Genuine question, don't know the answer. But it definitely feels weird to have this change in the countdown.
@@shinydavidhowell yeah, it's very common for video-related hardware and software to count frames, since those are the meaningful time intervals when it comes to video processing
@@shinydavidhowell In our editorial department, we only use frames and not milliseconds. The hundredths scale is of no use when editing video material because you only calculate in frames anyway. And especially in the news sector, other frame rates are mostly not in use.
It's very interesting that most commentators in this channel perceive the changes as being the end of BBC World News. In the UK, the changes are being discussed as the end of the (domestic) BBC News Channel, because it's mostly the World News presenters and programmes that have been kept.
I don't mind the countdown in the middle but I do mind the intro looking an absolute mess, they totally could've figured out a way for the globe to be put in the middle
Besides the awesome tune, the footage shows the people who really make the news: the reporters on site and their team. (In contrast to those in the studio just reading from a prompter). David Lowe’s piece is as simple as genius, delivering an all time synth classic. Recognised even beyond Britain.
New branding of BBC is great, vibrant and does show the character of each channel. But it feels strange in news channel, especially comparing with that old red square.
0:53-0:59 That bit, with the street first empty of people, just speeded-up crossing traffic, and then the reporter girl getting ready for her part, was absent from the intro reels for several years but has now returned. It's a nice one, I wonder why it was consistently gone for a long time?
0:40 Lucy Hockings, currently early afternoon anchor (European/Brit time). That sequence is almost a decade old, I think. Some others of these nice vignettes have also been around for several years.
I don't mind the new countdown. Sure, it could've been more closely resembles the BBC Alba version (with gradients on the timer), but it's okay nonetheless. The intro on the other hand… It feels like a half-baked redesign. Even BBC News themselves are reverting to the old version most of the time.
Having the clock countdown, in BIG white block digits, smack dab in the middle of the picture felt like an obvious flaw to me as soon as I saw the new intro - that one used to be at the lower right corner and a bit less conspicuous. It just wrecks some of these elegant vignettes, many of which have been in the theme reel for years...
@@louise_roseThe clock has definitely grown on me, but the intro still hasn't. In fact there's some inconsistency I noticed on the intros and outros they use, sometimes I see a version with grey colored text for place names on the intro, then on the outro I see a version with black colored text for the place names, and not to mention that you need to view the intro in a higher frame rate (i think) in order for the globe animation to pan out properly because they updated the intro from 24 fps to something higher. They really messed it up and only if Martin Lambie-Nairn could see this.
also not to mention the BBC NEWS text they just slapped on to fit the branding, and because of that the globe needed to shift more to the left, they did that poorly as well. i would really love to see an actual new intro that accommodates the new branding better because God, this intro has been used, modified several times and shortened since it's first use back in 2008.
@@cruises_arendelle Yes, I see what you mean - the globe animation comes out wrong and poorly synched. It used to be a slightly smaller globe I think... As a longtime follower of BBC World News I've watched the intro sequences for many years, and with some attention - it's clear that sometimes a vignette is cut off earlier, sometimes it lasts longer (the reporter staying in view for a few seconds more). I think that was sometimes done in order to get a better rhythmic synch with the music. The guy in yellow running in the background at 0:12 is a funny touch - for one thing, he's against the visual direction of the shot (we don't expect him coming) and also, his running has often seemed out of synch with the beat! 😃
I get that their new branding wants stuff to be center-aligned, but the intro is absolutely terrible. Globe on the right, then have the branding scattered all over; it looks very off and clearly shows that they're hastily rigging old assets to fit a new design. The countdown is just barely OK. I really like seeing BBC journalists in action around the world and the countdown is obscuring them. It's also barely legible & looks more like a watermark.
it actually works really well. at the top in big, front and center BBC, then it tells you at the bottom which channel your on, one, two, news, cbbc, etc etc

This is miserable 😂. The countdown looks like what I believe bbc alba uses, but worse And at some points the countdown is completely illegible. Same choon since 2013, red globe very poorly shifted to the right to allow the new bbc news watermark to fit (and it still doesn't) and WOW The word News is red now 🤯
The intro seems..slightly unfinished and numbers in the countdown should be more contrast, as sometimes you can't see them at all. Though, if BBC give it a little bit polish or fully refresh the graphics, then it will look just OK.
I... don’t like these. 1. What the hell with that countdown? Big numbers at center usually reserved for small countdown like 5 or 10 seconds, not 90. 2. The ident looks forced and good david lowe's music chopped and squeezed to fit 3. The studio itself looks fake. If they want a curved display they should learn from Al Jazeera, ARD (Tagesschau) or DR (TV Avisen), they have seamless curved display that fit well.
Yep, I agree, having the countdown at the centre (and in BIG digits!) looks and feels intrusive. It spoils many of the elegant vignettes and serves no purpose at all. They should also return to giving the name of the newsreader (as an inserted byline) when he/she gets on the air after the headlines. I have no idea why they dropped that, some of their names are quite hard to guess the spelling from hearing it, just once, at the start.
