Late evening on 25th December 1990 and 'Birds of a Feather' has just finished, into a full news bulletin with Jill Dando - a fascinating point in history with a just clinging on Soviet Union, an imminent Gulf War and a rare report from inside Albania. How do you keep so many of these recorings in prestine condition given their age?. Even some of my better tapes (which there aren't many) don't come close to these uploads. What capture program do you use?. I normally use Virtualdub but it is prone to sync issues so I now use AmarecTV which also captures raw but encoding takes quite a long time depending on the processor and encoding settings in Handbrake.

Nothing special, I just copy the clips to DVD using a VHS/DVD combo bought back in 2005, and then VLC to make them computer files. I still haven’t worked out how to make them 50fps as some clever people have done on here, but for the most part the tapes play surprisingly ok given they’ve been in a dusty box for many years until recently.

@@billyh88uk Thanks for that. I normally capture my tapes to my computer at 25fps (for PAL). I don't bother capturing at a higher framerate for analog video, maybe it produces better video I don't know. Handbrake is a really good encoding program once you have captured the video a PC, you can set the different framerate, resolution, set the video and audio bitrate etc. Encoding can take quite a while if the capture was lossless but depends on the CPU (1hour capture lossless will produce around 20GB - depending on the codec you use). Yeah I have a DVD/VHS combo which is a Panasonic but needs fixing. It records in both DVD-R and a media called DVD RAM that hardly anyone ever used. Your recordings are very good compared to most of mine. I think not playing them very much and keeping them stored has prevented them from wear and tear.
