The greatest sports theme tune of all time. This was also the theme to Wednesday Night's European Soccer Special. For me, this tune will always be associated with the Liverpool & Nott'm Forest teams of the mid-late 70's & very early 80's..
Takes me back to my youth. The great Peter Jones commentating on big European nights for English clubs and me huddled under the blankets. Great times and people were easily pleased.
The theme tune for my life! Remember all those Saturdays waiting for the day's football to start! Remember listening to those European nights with an old Murphy wooden radio looking for Hilversum/ Paris /Cologne and 1500 M long wave for Radio 2!
What great memories, as a youngster would tune into Radio 2 on a Tuesday night and at precisely 8.02pm we got this legendary tune before the great Peter Jones would say "On this big European night, and theres already been a goal at the City Ground" ...happy memories indeed!
I remember listening to Peter Jones describing the Hillsborough disaster as I was driving home from the shops. The last ten minutes is on You Tube somewhere and it's very moving from him. He was never the same after what he witnessed and died 12 months later
as a keen football fan I would spend most of the afternoon in suspense as they never revealed until half time where the second half commentary would be from
I remember as a kid in the mid 80s waiting for the John Dunn show to finish, before this beautiful tune rang in my ears...The commentators in those days were Bryon Butler,Mike Ingham,Alan Green & the brilliant, brilliant Peter Jones....I have never heard a commentator emulate Jones, since he passed after the boat race in 1990....Almost 30 years on,I doubt I ever will....Great upload
They also used two commentators (and a summeriser) for the main games with each one taking a 22 1/2 minute stint (for example if it was Alan Parry and Peter Jones on commentary Parry would be on at the start of each half for the first 22 1/2 minutes before handing over to Jones who would take listeners through to half-time/full time.)
Arsenal v Sheffield Wednesday - Five replays,FA Cup 1979 Arsenal v Liverpool - Three replays,FA Cup 1980 Those were some evenings sitting round the radio as a 10/11 year old with my dad. This theme tune was as much a point of excitement in the evening as anything that the football brought us! Such memories!
Seem to remember listening to Soccer Special in the late 70's when Arsenal had that epic League Cup match against Swindon Town. Arsenal losing 4-3 to the 3rd Division side.
As a Liverpool fan I remember Kenny Dalglish’s last gasp equaliser at Villa Park & both me & my dad jumped up celebrating & the radio getting knocked over in the excitement. Dad gone now but lovely memories
..... "and we have an action-packed afternoon for you, with racing from Cheltenham, badminton from ??, world darts, boxing from Las Vegas, rugby League - Widnes v Warrington - and of course a full League program where we are going for live 2nd half commentary to Villa Park for the visit of Leeds United."
Fantastic!!! i've been wanting to hear this again for ages !!! talk about bringing back wondergul memories when i was in my early teens. an avid leeds united fan i will never forget the brilliant voice of peter jones commentating on leeds v west brom in the fa cup .....we lost 4-3 i think??? lol
awesome like being 12 again tea and whole packet of buscuits listening to liverpool winning most tuesdays or wednesdays in europe St ettenine games was legendry on the radio
@@RobinRobin-cw6qb And World title fights live from New York, Kinshasa, Manila, Tokyo, Kingston, Atlantic City and Las Vegas, James Hunt winning the F1 World Title in a soaking wet Japan in 1976, Nigel Mansell's rear tyre going pop losing him the F1 World Title in Australia in 1986 all of which were also broadcast on FM on Local Radio when they closed at midnight and switched to Radio 2
My earliest memory is 1971 Tottenham v Arsenal, Arsenal needed a win or a goaless draw. I was 10 and we had a little radio and it the commentary was by Maurice Eddlestone. There was no internet, no idea or any way of knowing what the scores were. 48 years ago, and I can recall as clear as yesterday the moment Arsenal scored to go 1-0 up. Those memories went on through the 19702. Oh, there was no 5 Live back then. The only way to know the score was wait until the end of the news, or hope it was on Radio two Midweek Soccer Special. Memories.
