In a special programme from Kazakhstan, Mike Corey explores the significant role of nature on the people of Kazakhstan and the travellers who visit there. He begins by having his journey blessed by a shaman, discovering how the ancient shamanic beliefs worshipping the power of nature are undergoing a resurgence in post-soviet Kazakhstan. He heads east to see the scale of the loss of the Aral Sea - once one of the world’s biggest environmental disasters - before going in search of the waters which are now returning and fishing with the local fisherman whose lives have been transformed by the sea’s return.

As a Kazakh from Kazakhstan, this is such a western-centric video. I bet westerners watching this will get an impression that Kazakhs are weird and "thank goodness I'm from a normal country with non-barbaric traditions". Truth is, most Kazakhs find the shamanistic portion of this video weird - it's not common at all, and it certainly doesn't represent how most Kazakhs live. But I'm not surprised given that it's BBC lol. If you want to see real Kazakhstan, follow Kazakh bloggers please.

@Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury as a matter of fact most Kazakhs are Muslim, although not so religious. But that's besides the point. Kazakhstan is pretty safe to visit regardless of the traveler's looks or faith.
@astoriastory
@astoriastory 3 года назад
@Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury well that's certainly a thing. In Soviet times many attributes of Kazakh culture, language, lifestyle, and faith was actively repressed. As a result, today Kazakhstan is culturally very similar to Russia, e.g. many people speak Russian instead of Kazakh. We lost a chunk of our identity. Today, when people r returning to their roots, there is a lot of debate about what defines Kazakh. Are we Muslim? How should Kazakh women dress? Should we punish employees who dont speak Kazakh? There is a lot of work ahead towards defining Kazakh-ness, but it rarely concerns foreigners. Nobody will question your faith as a foreigner. As for Islam, the government has its reasons to worry because some of the religious youth gets easily swayed into questionable organizations, so they ban prayers and headscarves in schools and government-run organizations, but that whole political debate is not violent, and none of that will concern a visiting foreigner.
@astoriastory

@Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury well i know quite a few hijabi girls, and while their friends and families give them a hard time, not a single time did i hear about about being literally attacked. What you have seen must have been either an extreme exaggeration or a lie.

It is such a beautiful country and people of course. I am Mongolian myself and I find it such shame that Kazakh people are brainwashed to deny their Mongol roots during the Soviet era and trying to be Arabic or Turkish. I met a Kazakh guy in London and immediately bonded by our ethnicity. He looked just like my brother. At first thought, he was from Mongolia. I mean yes he is Mongolian but now Kazakh has become its own country. Then one day he got drunk and told me how he hated Mongolians as he said Mongols slaughtered Kazakh people... Mongols never slaughtered Kazakh people because Kazakh people are Mongolian people under the Chinggis Khan's ruling. He united us under the name of Mongol. I am myself Buryatian, Tuvan and Khalkha Mongol. We spoke different dialects and languages and practised different religions. The Ilkhanate, Golden Horde, and the Chagatai Khanate - three of the four principal khanates (except for the Yuan dynasty) - embraced Islam, as the Mongol elite favoured Islam to strengthen their rule over the Muslim majority populace. We are nomadic people and have always praised our Tengeri. Hope they are starting to get in touch with our roots.

Um, kazakhs are decedents of kypchaks turks who suffered mongolian invasions which is why most look mongolic. J-just what do you study in history classes? Both were nomads, yes and both were under soviet dictator ship, of course. But that’s pretty much it? No hate in my comment but i feel like instead of bonding over race why not bond over soviet era since it effected people of modern day?
@TemuulTK
@TemuulTK 4 года назад
@@somelove9872 Stop talking non-sense so Kazakhs become more Mongolic but Armenians and Kypchaks became more middle eastern looking. It is nothing to do with the invasion as some anti-Mongol historians have tried to mislead the history. Not so long ago Mongolians in Mongolia hated also Ghenghiz/ Chingis Khan and we Mongolians, Kazakhs, Buryats and all the other Mongol people hated each other because of communist misleading history they were teaching and unfortunately it still now continues like you believe Mongols invaded and raped Kazakhs that is why they look Mongolian. So according to you Mongols did not rape Armenians even though we invaded them! Bottom line is there are yes Mongolic and Turkic tribes in the east of Russia nations like Armenia are Turkic you can see that but Kazakhs, Butyats, Tuvan, for example, these are Mongol people. Today's Kazakh people for centuries managed to keep their bloodline clean. Most Kazakhs don't intermarry. The only difference is some of Mongol tribes adopted Turkic language and became Muslim. The Ilkhanate, Golden Horde, and the Chagatai Khanate - three of the four principal khanates (except for the Yuan dynasty) - embraced Islam, as the Mongol elite favored Islam to strengthen their rule over the Islam majority populace. Which is why the vast majority of Mongols became Muslim.

Dude, i am kinda sorry you're feeling that way, but most dont feel the same way you do, especially those who are from younger generation, they can related to soviet times since it's most recent event that happened here. And if you believe that you are Turkish that is fine man good for you. I really care about the true history that is all. You saying that Armenians were lucky because of mountains is so stupid to be honest. Since you think that is true I guess it shows your level of education.
