The accompaniment to these old BBC News idents has that "Sit your ass down, it is the news" feeling to them. Punchy, impactful and nothing like we have today. On a side note, I think Moira is one of the last presenters the BBC had on both television and radio that spoke true RP. Unforgettable voice.
I much prefer the way the news used to be presented with an authoritative tone. Where was now it’s as if presenters are trying to have a conversation with the viewer. Radio 4 is one of the few that still keeps this style.
