My best guess at an answer: I remember reading that certain reactions with Sodium/Potassium metal can be so exothermic as to result in dangerous localized hotspots forming. So, maybe, at first the surface reacts to form a sort of "passivating" crust of either NaBr/KBr or a poly-boride layer. Hitting it with a hammer then forces rapid intermixing of the partially unreacted/encased oxidizer with the Sodium/Potassium metal which results in a massive temperature spike at multiple locations, with the NaBr/KBr enthalpy of formation providing enough energy to boil some of the alkali metal, which produces the gaseous force that blows the metal apart. It might just be a standard Coulombic explosion though. Just first requiring enough heat to melt the metal to get through the passivating surface products.
@BothHands1
@BothHands1 4 года назад
Mortlet that's definitely a good guess, but then i wonder why there was no reaction even when mixed with red-hot sodium under a blowtorch?
@mortlet5180
@mortlet5180 4 года назад
@@BothHands1 Yeah so just molten Sodium might not be enough, although he didn't thoroughly mix them, he just kinda poured the BBr on top of the already burning Sodium. I would be very suspicious of a nice and glassy Boron Oxide layer forming from the Sodium Oxide present at the surface, and inhibiting further reaction while the evaporation of the liquid BBr3 on top quickly cools and solidifies the Sodium metal underneath. But once again, this is all some very bad speculation on my part. I've never taken an actual Chemistry class past high-school so...
@BothHands1
@BothHands1 4 года назад
Mortlet hmmm, you may be right. i've heard some other really interesting/compelling exanations too though, so i'm holding out for some confirmation. will be checking back in the comments periodically in the hopes that someone has a definitive answer. but i definitely think your speculation has merit. :)
@mortlet5180
@mortlet5180 4 года назад
@@BothHands1 Yeah I'm doing the same, and thanks :) It might really just be as simple as a fast increase in new surface area formed through mechanical deformation by the hammer though. I think I'd have to see a piece of Sodium reacting in a nice large amount of liquid BBr3 to narrow it down.

Hey, thank you so much for making this awesome video! I had always thought that you couldn't handle BBr3 without a perfectly air-free vacuum chamber, and here you are pipetting it around in air! 8O The only time I've "seen" it be used, was as a gas inside of a vacuum, with exquisite temperature control being used to achieve the desired vapour pressure from the BBr3 reservoir. And even there the people had us do this whole training session about how BBr3 cannot exist in the atmosphere and how even a minute leak from the vacuum chamber would produce copious amounts of white smoke which, if it contacted exposed skin, would basically result in amputation. We were still told to immediately jump in the emergency showers while waiting for medical attention, but that we shouldn't even try washing the exposed area with dilute bicarbonate solution, since the "gaseous acid" would have already "gone through" the skin... Yeah.
@mortlet5180
@mortlet5180 4 года назад
@HalfSpeedMastering Tear "gas" is a bit of misnomer. Actual gases haven't been used against people for decades. To cut to the chase, the active compound in CS (2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile) or CN (Phenacyl chloride) "gas" is a solid, but when forced out in really small particles they form what is called an aerosol (basically like a suspension, but just in the air), similar to smoke, but much finer.

With some perfluorohexane in a test tube, first add some bbr3 (sinks to the bottom) and then carefully add some dcm to it. This way you will form 3 seperate layers, with the c6f14 acting as a liquid membrane. You can use this setup to perform an ether cleavage, turning an ether, dissolved in the dcm, back to an alcohol. It's a very nice reaction. I recommend you try it, if you've never done it before :)

I don't know for a fact but BBr3 probably creates some amalgam like mixture (smth like soaking tissue in water, no actual chemical changes but there's an obvious effect) that has a compromised structure So when a sudden change in pressure occurs that breaks a bond a chain reaction occurs like when tempered glass breaks I can't be sure I gotta check the chemical structures and even then I still cant be sure but that's my 2 cents

kan petyim kan petyim but why does it become impact sensitive? what's happening chemically? is it basically the same thing as dropping it in water? but if that's the case, why didn't it have any reaction before the impact -- water would have caused an immediate reaction. someone else suggested a thin glass-like layer of NaBr/KBr might form on the outside, which prevents any further oxidation. but i guess smashing them together causes a ton of new surface area to be oxidized, causing the very quick reaction we saw here. but that still makes me wonder why it doesn't act the same with water? is the reaction with water not an oxidation reaction? i guess it produces KOH, so it's a reduction reaction instead? i'm admittedly a bit rusty on my chem
