I live in New Jersey. Have an electric stove, electric water heater, and an electric clothes dryer. Have two AC in 2 windows that run constantly in the summertime. In the summertime my electric bill is $100/ month. In the wintertime, half that. My electric company has a program where the longer you are with them, the less you pay. Ive been with them for 16 years.
Thanks Dave. I guess I am spoiled. My Power bill is in the $80 to 90 a month here. (Central Wisconsin) Propane Stove & Hot water. 100 Lb Tanks lasts about 4 1/2 to 5 Months. and only $75 to Fill. Heat is almost free. Wood from My own Property, also heats the Domestic water in the winter. Water Heater is turned off. power is only used to run the 2 Pumps. My biggest constant draw is the Lights & radio in the Pole shed are on 24/7 to keep critters out till I can get My floor installed
Right but you have to buy gas for your car. I don't. Ev costs 1/5 the price of gas car and that's just the energy. My car paid for itself in 7 years compared to old gas guzzler I drove. Can't have wood burning fireplace here anymore. It's about air pollution. Just heard on radio today that existing wood burning fireplace needs to be registered now and can not burn cord or split wood starting next year. Only things like presto logs.
There was no "doctored bar graph" That was shot right off the screen. If you are referring to the last bar on the right with the lines in it, that is because I just tipped into the second tier.
Damn Dave, I live in 3500 sq.ft two story 3 bedroom house and my electric bill a month comes no where close to what you pay a month! Jesus christ man! It must be very expensive up there in Canada. You must have a very well financial foundation to make those payments. You must be very wealthy. Must be nice. Maybe that explains alot of things from the type of videos of repairs you do up on your videos Dave!
How is your house heated. Gas? How about hot water? My place is 2500sq ft 2 storey insulated up the Ying yang. Put in heat pump 20 odd years ago. Was always cheap till the former government moved to a 2 tier price scheme. Pay 1 rate till you hit a certain level then pay double for the rest of billing cycle. This was to encourage saving. Problem is when everything is electric thats not possible and with an 8 week billing cycle hitting that second tier 10 days I meant for very high energy bills. Already I am expecting a 90 savings every month. Remember I have 2 electric cars as well and I charge only at home.
I am a senior but I'm on an equal billing plan with BC Hydro, about $150 a month, so I pay a few more dollars on my year end bill. I have to have 2 air conditioners running all summer long or I will die from the heat, plus all the other equipment I run during the day adds up. You're right, that kind strategy is not for me. Good for you if you have the time and energy to do this, we all need to do our part to save energy.
They must do it different where you live, down here in Texas my electric bill last month was only $146 and some change. But I’d be curious on how much electricity your vehicle use to charge.
I live in the same area as Dave and my electric bill is around $100 every 2 months. I do not own electric cars, or heat pumps or have an A/C system in my home.
@@bobsoft I have many things that suck back power here big time. Heat pump, Hot tub, 2 electric cars, electric hot water, and big power hungry plasma TVs, plus a couple of AC units. Also a fish tank that I can't wait for the last fish to kick so I can take that down as it has pumps and lights that run all the time. Idle power here, with nothing but the essentials running draws about 2Kw 24/7.
@@12voltvids My Fortis bill? That just came in at $50, of course its higher in the winter with forced air furnace and water heater running more. As far as petrol I wouldn't be a fair comparison since I retired 2 years ago and drive under 5,000 km a year in my 4 cylinder car.
I have gas for the range, fireplace and emergency backup. Gas is actually much more expensive. In the winter I turn the gas fireplace on and it will easily burn up about 80 in gas. Well not actually the cost of the gas, but all the fees added. Last month I used 0.9Gj of nat gas for my range. This is a very small amount. In cubic feet 1Gj is 947 cubic feet and I used 0.9. Cost of the gas was 2.01 but the bill was 25.37. Gas currently cost 2.23 per Gj. The rest is fees and taxes. The government used to own not only BC Hydro but also BC Gas and they distributed it at cost. The BC Libersls under Gordon Campbell and Chrusty clark sold off BC gas to private companies and well they have to make a profit, because they are greedy bastards. So there is a basic charge of 12.23 per month charged just to connect you to the main. Call this a meter rental. Then they charge 0.24 per Gj to store the gas in the pipe. Then another 6.71 to deliver the gas in said pipe. So, 12.23 to maintain the pipe and meter, 0.22 to store the gas in the pipe, 6.04 to deliver the gas, the cost of the actual gas 2.01. The government has to get their pound of flesh in the form of a carbon tax, again another brilliant idea by the previous Liberal government and the current one won't get rid of a tax, to the tune of 3.99 per Gj of gas. Then there is the clean energy levy of 0.08 and the feds get their 5% GST on top of all the other fees for another 1.20. So to run a gas range it's 25.00. When I fire up the fire place, a very small fireplace that is set to the minimum it wil ge closer to 60. Just talked to a friend that heats with gas, has a gas HW heater and a gas dryer and cooks with gas. His gas bill 300.00 per month. So no gas is NOT cheaper. It is far more expensive, and a gas HW heater needs to be replaced every 10 years because the heat exchanger wears out quickly. Electric tanks are good for at least 20 years.
@@12voltvids I was going on 24 Years on the Natural gas Water Heater at My old place before the Fire, The Anode Rod had ben replace a few times as will as the bottom flushed out with full water pressure and the Drain was replaced with a 3/4" full port Ball valve when I had the loop for the OWB created. When the last Anode rod was replaced I shop Vac'd out the bottom. A bright light into the top and the Gas Valve out I could see well inside the Tank. The OWB loop had a sediment filter to catch any crud before the water went into the Flat plate heat exchanger (Hot water rated) .
In the UK we have Agile a similar tariff from the Octopus energy company 4pm to 7pm is very expensive too. I'm saving around £60 a month, do you have plunge periods where they pay you to use electricity? Last Saturday I used 58kWh and it cost me -£1.48. 🙂
No not here but those that have solar can sell their excess back. Thing is to put in a solar system capable of my needs is about 250,000 and I don't have 250k kicking around to save 300 a month lol.
@@VinceFelix-ff9cfmine is a plug in hybrid so it has a generator on board so no range limits as it switches to gas when charge runs our, but with a fill charge 80 to 90 km and then the gas fires up.
55 miles. I can drive 50 to 55 miles for between 1.25 and 1.50. Try that on any gas car, and remember i have gas backup so when I need to drive beyond that range the engine starts and I just drive and put gas in the tank when its empty. 42mpg, so 9 gallons will take me about 375 miles between fill up.
Jeebus, 300 a month for power? You need to unplug all that old junk you have that eats up 10W in phantom power by just being plugged in. I don't exactly conserve power, and have many PC's running 24/7, and I'm PO'ed if my bill is more than 100 a month!
2 electric cars. How much gas does your car burn a month? My plug in hybrid uses about 1 tank if fuel a year unless I am traveling. In the past month I have used about 1.00 in fuel.. The 2 cars use about 20 a week between the 2 of them. I'm waiting for the last fish to expire in the tank then it will go. The pump that runs 24 hours draws about 100 watts. The light that runs 12 hours a day 100 watts. There are a few things that waste power like modems security cameras ect. I do shut stuff down when nor in use. Big plasma tv chews up a fair bit too. Its not running all day though. Just a few hours in the evening. Lots if stuff here though. Hot tub ect.
