Thank you for this video, very informative. I live in Alaska, and I know there is jade about but have recently become more interested in actually finding some smaller pieces on the beach. This will help me identify what is real jade and what isn't! We (my family) already find plenty of beach agates near our family cabin.

Because of its durability early cultures that had jade to make tools, advanced faster than those that didn't. Chinese, south American, and even north west indigenous. Found a stone scraper made of jade, had an anthropologist look at it, determination - pre contact - later assessment up to 1000.00 years old still sharp. amazing find. Pretty piece was returned to Komox first nation, may have been a burial offering.

I get what you're driving at -- nephrite has a longer history in China and so is sort of the original "jade" -- but I think you're going to confuse people. Now "Jadeite" refers to a particular mineral -- it doesn't mean any old green serpentinite-type stuff that isn't nephrite. It doesn't mean _pseudo-jade_ or _fake_ Jade. Also, it's generally more valuable than nephrite -- which would be odd if it were just fake nephrite.

Jade is a wonderful stone to carve, but is tricky to polish. Because it is tough it can be worked very thin revealing it's translucent qualities. After carving and smoothing, finish on a leather wheel with cerium oxide. I like to pick through the bargain bins at rock shows, found lots of nice stuff for cheap prices, usually smaller pieces, not just jade. Found some really nice jade awhile back carved 3 leaf shaped pendants, nice and thin. Beautiful and translucent. With lots of chromium spots through it.

Something to be aware of, jade may contain a certain content of asbestos. So when cutting, or working it always with water, and wear a mask.
@RubbleRockAndGem
@RubbleRockAndGem Год назад
this is very unlikeli. There is one jade miner that digs jade from an old aesbestos mine... but the jade is a seperate composition, and has been so transformed, that it is not possible for asbestos to be a part of jade... unless you have the lowest quality possible, or the particular jade minor didnt wash it well to get residual dust of it after mining.

@@RubbleRockAndGem Found your comment interesting. I was told that it did and advised to wear a mask when working the stone so I googled it and this is what came up I copied the text not my own words Nephrite is a non-asbestiform asbestos mineral composed of microcrystalline tremolite. Nephrite carving may increase the risk of lung cancer. Appropriate medical monitoring is warranted for workers who are exposed to similar materials.

jadeite jade is hard jade right and nephrite jade is soft jade and less expensive. He said that nephrite jade is real jade- this is the cheaper form of jade right???
@mariaann4717
@mariaann4717 5 лет назад
yes. jadeite is harder than nephrite but they are both real jade. fake jade (which is common to find on ebay and in asian markets) is jade powder mixed with a resin medium. jadeite is more expensive due to its higher quality and rarity (since most of it comes from myanmar). nephrite can be found in a few different areas of the world (most of which is found in british columbia) and is a little more affordable :)

Adam Kelliher no the brown is a gemstone type not rock bro. Lol Its probably common opal as you said. We find some solid green I call hulk hide and some is almost like as if its plastic and then it hardens up and turns to a crystal structure. It will have red dots in it as well. No flash as of yet. I'll friend you on fb and show you what I mean. I was out today and we found some beautiful agate or chalcedony. The root beer stuff if much softer than agate most definitely but it is a crystal not basalt.

You have some very beautiful chunks of Chrome Jade in your video. I like that kind the best also. In the last part of your video you seemed to confuse the terms "Jade" (a catchall category that includes Nepherite and Jadeite and sometimes green stones that look a little like Nepherite or jadeite, but aren't), with "Jadeite". Both Jadeite and Nepherite are considered actual "Jade" even though they have quite different chemical makeups as well as hardness differences. Here is a link that lists and compares a lot of the differences (including chemical composition, hardness, and crystalline structure) between Nepherite and Jadeite (the latter sometimes referred to as Burmese Jade since most of it's occurrence is in Burma), whereas "BC Jade" and "Chinese Jade" generally refers to Nepherite, found in both locations: www.differencebetween.com/difference-between-nephrite-and-vs-jadeite/
