There are a lot of different factors depending on the location you are at. Some stations are hit with severe storms and giant waves crashing into the station itself. I have not experienced this but I can only imagine the stress and fear that are involved in that.

Yes, a lot of it is painting and maintenance. Many of the stations do have cable or internet through satellite, as this is the only way of getting access.

The station I am at now (I am no longer at Entrance at the time of writing this) is not a standard lighthouse but a Sector light that is part of a narrow shipping channel that gets a lot of use every day. It is a little different than a typical Lighthouse but same type of idea. Can you share anything from your lighthouse? Awesome to see other Keepers here on youtube and I love to see what type of stations are being used in other countries. Thanks for reaching out!

I have not found any game to give me the sanctification of ME2. I will agree with you on it being one of the best games of all time. For me the solitude is amazing and the time spent alone without having to deal with anyone else is just bliss.

Thank you. Since you live there full time, many of the keepers do what they can to make their home as personal as possible. it is a very difficult process to move to a station but it is great when where you work is also your home and it is as much a part of you as possible.

It was always pretty great to eat your meal and watch the humming birds do their thing.

I hear you on that one. I think part of the reason may be the difficulty with terrain. With a lighthouse, the light can be focused into a concentrated beam of light. if you are not looking at the beam, the light is actually pretty hard to see. If you had a light on a mountain or a ridge, the light would need to be more spread out so it can be seen from many directions or at least it would need to be focused into a vertical line as it rotates so it can be seen from many elevations. Just my quick thoughts on it.

There are still some lighthouses that use more traditional lenses and bulbs, in other words, they are big. Very Big. But most of the modern day set ups are much smaller and provide the same amount of light in a much more compact package with less power required.

Hi Wayne, hope you are well. The only Internet I am working with currently is cellular but I am looking further into getting satellite put it but it can be expensive. The things you need before applying is first aid and marine radio certificate. Everything else you need is provided once you are working.

Yes, it is a fairly private job. You do have another keeper that you have to work with but it is not all the time.

Why thank you! I have since had to retire that one but I do have another now.

The tanks are full of diesel fuel. The island is not connected power wise to the mainland anywhere so we need to create our own power. Before the solar panels and wind generators, diesel engines were the only way to charge the batteries needed to power the entire island.

@@kelleyforbes8625 it is my take on a traditional Filipino breakfast, Cornsilog. Essentially it is rice with fried shredded corned beef topped with fried eggs. I love it and have it pretty much every day and just change the meat part of it from Corned beef to Spam, to Bacon or to fried smokies each day. I love it. yum.

That is awesome you would consider such a carrier and it would indeed be possible if you reside in Canada and have the correct credentials. I do love this job. I can't imagine doing anything else in my life right now.

I don't rent or have not bought. This is my job and since I live on site, the accomodations are provided for me.

To be a Keeper in Canada you need to be a Canadian citizen or resident and be legal to work in Canada. Then you need your first aid and your Marine Radio Certificate. After that, you just need to be assessed for your abilities to work in isolated conditions and your health to be sure you can be away from civilization for long periods of time.

Thank you so much for your kind words. It is very pleasing to read them and know that sometimes the efforts are worth it. I really wanted to convey these feelings of loneliness and isolation. There are many things you do alone while you are working and when I was filming this was all work done by myself. Different keepers work differently such as the current person I work with tends to want to always work as a team so much of what we do is done together and only a few things during the day are done apart. I have not seen my wife for 10 months now which is very unfortunate. We were hoping she could get out to where I am now before now but things have not quite worked out the way we wanted. Eventually she will live with me at my current station but there is a lot we still need to go through before we can do that. Thanks for your comments and questions.

Hi Ian, thanks for your comment. When I did this video, I had been at the station for about a week I believe and I honestly still had no idea what I was doing! lol. I wanted to put together a more artsy film and this is what happened. I had no idea it would end up being one of my most watched videos when I created it. That said, I did do another video that goes a little more in depth with what I do for duties here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BmLO9ZowsVc.html That also being said, I do plan on doing a 'redo' of this video at some point now that I am on a different station. I still have a few things to plan out for it but I do hope to have it sorted out soon. As for Ham Radio, I have considered but not sure if I can afford to get into another hobby. I am going to get myself a good marine radio and antenna so that I can more efficiently monitor the emergency channels but for now the handhelds will have to suffice.

I don't but I could understand how some would get that way. I do miss being with my wife but I am also quite busy every day so there isn't a lot of time to be lonely.

@@khaiayris3019 that is a compacted question. I did see my wife a few months ago and she does plan on visiting again in a few more months but at this time she has decided that living at the lighthouse maybe is not for her.

I am in Canada which still has 28 West Coast stations and 23 East Coast stations that are still manned.

@@lighthouserockpodcast3858 The station I am at is quite difficult to get to. If you do a google search for Boat Bluff you will see that we have very little access. There are no roads to get here and the only way is by ferry and then by a private boat or if you are really willing, you can charter a helicopter and fly out from Port Hardy. One of the reasons we have to live here full time year round is because of the diffuclty in actually geting out here.

Honestly I think being a lighthouse keeper would be one of the best jobs for me Because I love to be alone, especially when doing any work that I already know what to do without any help Infact I usually hate being around people, and honestly having a job that's most isolated sounds great to me. Which may sound completely mad to most

You are not completely alone, you do have another keeper with you, there are always 2 in reomote places like this just in case there is a medical emergency.

I don't know if the wage for the lighthouse is question is legit but I would take what I hear online with a grain of salt, so to speak. When a position is open, it is usually posted on the government of canada jobs board.

Personally I do not. I know this is not for everyone but for me, I am very comfortable with spending time by myself. Currently, I do have the ability to go into town by boat if I need to but more often than not, I choose not to. There is lots to keep me busy and I find I don't have enough time to do what I want to do.

Working is not really like hours as you would consider a traditional job. You have 3 or 4 weather reports you are required to do each day with 3 hours between reports. What you do between those times is up to you and the person you are working with at the station. There are always things that need to be done around the station and you get to them as time and weather permits. Some days there is very little extra to do as the weather is bad and others, you can work for 10 or 12 hours in a day just to get a project done. I personally don't drink but there are others who do drink beer or wine or other things. There is a certain level of responsibility that needs to be understood as you can be called to action at any time, day or night. If there is an emergency and your station is needed then you are expected to be alert and ready to assist as needed. Having a drunk Lightkeeper around working helicopters or handling heavy cargo would be greatly frowned upon.

@@BCLighthouseKeeper my dream is to become a drunken lightkeeper, do you think is viable? Does someone ever come and check up on what you are doing? Cuz my plan is to hire someone from a low wage country to do all the job. We will chill there and split the wage so i get 70% he gets 30% we will both be happy but if they check up on you i need to be able to hide him. Also, could you throw massive parties and have epic nenders and such there?

@@Zezam_ as viable as your plan may sound there are a few flaws. First you are not alone, you have a partner that you are working with. Any plans of conspiracy would have to be agreed upon by both of you working there. Also helicopters come by at some frequency. Sometimes they bring people to inspect the area, sometimes they don't but you need to be ready to receive the helicopter at any time so as I mentioned previous, not a good idea to be intoxicated while around such machinery. As for parties and benders, well not sure who you intend to party with but usually access to locations can be quite difficult so if you intend to party alone then I suppose that is possible. I think overall your plan lacks in certain areas of responsibility and since you are responsible for lives both in the air and in the water, I think you would be better off just moving to a northern town somewhere, doing some simple job and spending evenings in the local bar or at your own dwelling. It may end up being safer for you and for other mariners on the water.

Yes, safety is on my mind a lot here. I would not want to have to do a medical evac!

I would say about 40% of lightkeepers are now female so being a girl does not hinder your ability to do the job.

There is always 2 people who work on a single station, one in the mornings and one in the afternoons. Depending on who they are, you don't always see the other person that often.

That sounds like a dream, but I am Spanish/British and over the age of 40, so I do not think they would want me just simply moving in @@BCLighthouseKeeper

@@NatManzano I started my positon when I was 48 and fully plan on working well into my 60's. If you keep fit and in decent shape then the work is not overly diffuclt to do and fully managable as you get older. As for your nationality, you would need to be able to legaly work in Canada, meaning you would need a Canadian SIN number. That does pose some difficulty.

@@BCLighthouseKeeper I walk 6 miles a day, do yoga and cycle and kayak frequently. I also swim. I think the difficulty would be to get a visa at my age, even with the British passport. But I love Canada even if I cannot do it. I will try some European lighthouses. You are really cool. Thanks.
