Man, I've owned this game for years and still haven't played it. Excellent job on the review, I think it's the first fair shake I've seen this game get.
Thanks, man! I appreciate it. Really gotta' thank Retro Gamers Hub. I think they expected me to rip it apart but, after trying it again, I found myself liking it. The hand-brake's a big help, and finding the alternate viewing angles (press 'start', then any one of the action buttons to change the view) gave it some dimension... However, judging from the numerous videos I've watched on RU-vid, the SEGA CD version looks like it may be better.
I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts on Chuck Rock and maybe Chuck Rock II? I adore the art style but they play as typical Euro platform titles. Surprised Core did so many Chuck Rock titles, Jeremy Heath Smith, company M. D, hated the character 😂
i will stick with f zero for the SNES but i can kinda see the apeal with a little polish this game could have been good and do i hear the cool-spot level one theme at the beginning?^_^
Hahaha! F-Zero's not bad. Yes, I used some Cool Spot music early on. I generally rip the soundtrack to a game so I don't have to edit the audio so much, but I couldn't find a single piece of score for the 32X version, so I improvised. It came closest to the sound, and it got me through the opening bit of the review.
Perhaps, yes. It was just taking up space on my shelf, and I rarely hear anyone talk about when discussing 32X. It's one of those games you buy because you're collecting for the unit and it was usually $2 loose. Now, I'm shocked to see that's price has jumped to $20+. I think much of that has to do with the European market having never received their own copy, so more folks are importing it.
And I know I was one of those negative people. My initial experience with this game wasn't exactly positive. However, thanks to some folks over at Retro Gamers, I gave it another chance. Oddly enough, I finally got the hang of it and enjoyed myself somewhat. How about you? Better than Motocross, or no?
I'm actually quite surprised with how competent the game turned out to be. This is the first time I ever seen a review for this game and I was expecting something really bad, but its like you said before. It's not a perfect game, but you can definitely get your fun out of it and there are far worse games out there.
Yeah, definitely! Admittedly, I was fully prepared to write a scathing review that would rival damn near every video made about it, which there aren't many. When I started playing it again, I had a much different experience. Strange turn-around.
Nice review but what about the graphics that you can barely see the track due to the low resolution even on a CRT this looks terrible. It actually looks better here on youtube due to the small window and they could have done something to improve the graphics for the 32x version.
Thanks, cap'n! As for the graphics, I don't feel they're that bad for the era and console. Admittedly, the track's difficult to see during 'Night Rally' and 'Jungle Rumble'. Believe it or not, they did improve the graphics here somewhat. The color palette's a bit more robust, more vibrant... But that frame-rate though. From what I've seen of the SEGA CD version, run through composite, it looks as though the frame-rate's smoother. One thing that does kinda' bother me in retrospect is that the 32X should be able to handle sprite scaling and rotational effects in its sleep. Like, the add-on is supposed handle it even better than polygons, yet BC Racers looks as if it's struggling at times.
I know everyone hates this game, but for some reason when I played it on the Sega CD I really enjoyed it. Not sure why, though it's been a very long time now!
From what I've seen online, the SEGA CD version looks a little better. That, and it has a goofy cutscene, better music, and a competent menu. The only downside I can see to the SEGA CD game is that the color palette's lower, and there's no "versus" play. Honestly, I'd like to give it a try.
Oh, stop picking on the library size. That's so 1998. LOL! All kidding aside, it's an "okay" game. Way better than Motocross. Still, from what I've seen online, the SEGA CD version's better.
I was not aware of any boost. I found this game pretty hard and there were always one or two racers whooping my ass. Never able to get past them so a boost would be good. I thought the cartoon graphics was pretty sweet! I also agree as well that the flipping right side punch only was lame. Either way this is a fun game but only for a couple of plays then it's meh
Bummer. I've had similar experiences with Star Fox on SNES. The frame-rate tends to give me a headache after 10 minutes, but I'll suck it up for that game.
Huge missed opportunity. These games needed optimising on every platform but the MS-DOS version. The 32X version should have had the attack button work on either side depending where the other karts were. Presentation / music was a lazy joke - not even a decent title screen and menu. Lazy, lazy mess and I hope that they lost a lot of money on this. Can tell why Tomb Raider on PS2 ended them.
Thank you very much! Well aware of the SEGA CD version, though I don't have it. Can't weigh in on that one. From what I've seen online, it has an opening cutscene, better music, and the menu looks competent. LOL!
Low framerate, but I don't hate it. Kind of fun, especially with two player. The Mega cd version runs better, but doesn't have coop. The 32X version is US only, but is region free.
I thought the SEGA CD version had cooperative play, having one player drive the bike, while does everything else? The 32X version has "versus" multiplayer. From what I've seen of the SEGA CD version, the music's a damn sight better. That, and the menu looks competent. Hahaha!
Love your reviews brotha!! Also a hardcore sega fan, till I found your channel I thought I was the only person still playing games on a32x.. lol.. the Sega CD version is far better, smoother scaling, music, and it has polish , whereas this version doesn’t feel totally complete, but I agree it isn’t terrible, but core knew their shit when it came to the Sega CD
Thanks, bro! I appreciate it. I'm definitely a Sega boy, and I've always loved the 32X. I freely admit that it was a mistake and that Sega should've shelved it, but I do enjoy the piss out of it. Sadly, I've noticed a lot of my viewers don't really go in for 32X. Like the Jaguar, it's kind of underrated in terms of power and perception. The sad thing about 32X is that was really easy to code for. Core knew Sega's hardware better than most, so it's kinda' shocking to see this port struggle. I know the cartridge was limited then, but I imagined better.
Wait what? You're saying the Sega CD version is smoother? Whens the last time you looked at it? I have both via emulation and the 32x is butter smooth compared to the slow and choppy Sega CD version. Or is it just bad emulation? Watch the comparison video on RU-vid, it's exactly how mine run.
Master-Cast TV Hahahaha to be honest I anticipate and enjoy your videos but it’s really good timing. However, unless you post another video in the next few days, I’m not gonna be able to “FIRST” ya anymore. Changing work shifts.
😉Your miss remembering. It was EAR MARKED for a potential Jaguar CD Conversion, but work never started. Andrew Smith interview: cd.textfiles.com/crawlycrypt2/txtfiles/aeo/aeo_0403/aeo_0403.txt DHGF Magazine Jeremy Heath - Smith : core-design.com/interview17h.html Mark Price from Core Design who did 3D modelling etc on Jaguar Soul Star is yet another source who’s been kind enough to confirm this was the only Jaguar title Core Design were working on.
