It was early in the life of the 32X. A platformer from Sega that wasn't Sonic and made by the company behind Bonk's Adventure. Is it worth playing?

Episode Notes:
1. I had an old Kega Fusion capture I had never used so I decided to roll with that for this review. I had played 6 stages and Kega did a fine job recreating it.
2. While Sega published the 32X and Game Gear titles, they had nothing to do with the Saturn version. Super Tempo was developed by Red Company, Aspect and T's Music. It was published by Media Quest.
3. To date, Tempo remains exclusive to each of its original platforms.
4. Red Company developed Sakura Wars games beyond the Dreamcast. They also did PC, PS2, DS and PSP games in the series.
5. The Game Gear version looks like a 16-bit game at times. It was absolutely gorgeous for an 8-bit title.
6. Super Tempo on the Saturn changed the gameplay radically. Tempo used bubbles to capture enemies, could swim, and pretty much played about as different as it could.
7. Tempo retailed for bank breaking $69.99 at its release. It was even more in Japan.
8. I remember showing this off to my buds when I got it trying to talk up the 32X's abilities. They laughed at me and went back to their Saturn's and 3DO's.

As someone who didn’t get to experience 90s games in their heyday, a lot of these old platformers have a lot of charm to me. I just really enjoy discovering games from an older generation where developers did things differently.

@@claudiosacchi3720 And let's keep it real the early 3D stuff looks like absolute garbage these days. 2D has a timelessness to it that just makes it still amazing even decades later. @@ManillaHeep Yeah I was in the same boat myself. I'm actually glad in retrospect that I never got these add-ons cuz they really weren't worth it but it's a shame these games are forever stuck on these consoles. The fact they've never been moved officially anywhere else is just a total shame. A collection of this series would be so cool.

Seeing this in a magazine at the time made me want a 32X... The Funcloland clerk talked my mom outta getting it tho. Same thing later happened when I wanted a Saturn... I went to get Rampage for N64. I was super excited about it and my uncle was taking me there to get it. But the clerk looked at me like that was a bad choice. I told him I have fun with it at the arcade. But he was set on stopping me from getting it and that the fun wouldn't last. So I listened to him and got something else which was Blast Corps. I new that was fun also since a friend had it. I don't regret it but it was def strange and really pissed off my uncle. He wanted to by me a new game for 50 which was gonna be rampage and ended up getting a used Blast Corps for 30. Definitely give it a go on an emulator. It's not amazing, but it's very decent. It's more an audiovisual treat than a gameplay one. Also check out the sequel Tempo Jr on the game gear. It's easier to emulate the game gear than the 32x. Also there's another sequel called Super Tempo, for the Sega saturn. But the saturn is notoriously difficult to emulate, so you can give it a go, but it may not work properly. You might need to actually own a Saturn and a copy of the game. However, it's relatively easy to burn.. ahem... "backups" of Sega saturns onto a CD using a regular CD burner, and play that "backup" disk on the saturn. Of course, to legally make "backups" of Sega saturn games, you must own an actual copy of the game already, but no need to worry about that...

I like how Tempo's box advertises that the game is in Q-Sound. LOLOLOLOLOL um no. The Genesis handles the lion's share of the audio in the game and all non-mono effects. The 32X only does the sampled sound. The Genesis can't steer Q-Sound at least not with the effort they put into that soundtrack. The 32X could probably do it, but every noise it makes itself in this game is in mono.

A 32X compilation is absolutely overdue. There aren't too many licensed games; Sega owns much of it. Star Wars would be an important license, but more folks should get to play Knuckles Chaotix, the Space Harrier and Afterburner ports, Star Wars, Tempo, Shadow Squadron... the version of Blackthorne on 32x felt pretty different, too... and... um... Metalhead? Kolibri? What really will happen is that Sega will say they have a huge announcement. It will be digital re-releases for PS5 and Xbox Series of Sonic 1 & 2, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and freaking Columns. That's what we all want. More ways to play the Genesis version of Columns.

Back in the day this one was a rental for me, then I had to buy it. Not my favorite gameplay in a platformer, I always preferred sonic, dynamite Headdy, rocket knight adv, but there was something about it that was exclusively on the 32x, heck it has a full vocal intro, wacky animations, and a solid music/dance theme. One thing that actually kept me coming back was the way you could grind for points to see more of the ending (of sorts) you got more pictures in the credits the higher your score. Some really wild pictures too. Yes, when you only have a few 32x games you play them a lot to find out these things. Am I the only one who did this? Great vid SLX!!!

@9:45 Tempo's "ducking kick" is actually the highest scoring single attack he has. It took me a few playthroughs to realize how nuanced the game's scoring system is. Far from ideal, but the game doesn't so much reward you for how well you play, but for knowing the spots where you can net loads of points, maximizing them, and (sometimes) dying intentionally to repeat it. It's worth mentioning this game's multi-tiered endings, all activated by score. The best endings require an insane amount of points, which some players have deemed impossible... likely the result of a last minute edit to the game to increase challenge and replay value without adjusting the default enemy totals, but I can confirm the top tier endings are achievable without cheats, even if the grinding involved won't make it worthwhile to many players. Building up enough bonus tokens in order to replay and perfect the bonus stages are also essential to great scores... I found the Karate rhythm game was the most efficient. For years, I had read about this game being stylish but without substance, but I finally snagged a copy earlier this year and I was surprised to find myself replaying it for about two weeks. I ended up appreciating what it does well so much (mostly the characters endear themselves to me), that I can overlook its faults. I even took the plunge and bought a Saturn copy of Super Tempo, and that one truly is work of art.
@SegaLordX

As far as I could tell the “endings” were just different picture prizes based on the score. Not really a compelling reason to replay to most folks.

@@SegaLordX I will say the best ending is interesting. Tempo and Katy end up married (I guess?), home owners, and are shown to have great success building up a big family of their own. Tempo and Super Tempo have some of the most colorful and appealing graphics style I’ve ever seen. The character design certainly rocks Gex, Rayman, etc. The first one is a bit clunky gameplay wise, and Super is simplified (for the better, I think). Every 2D platformer back in the mid 90's always seemed to have pre-rendered graphics and they really didn't age too well in most cases. Clearly the developers knew how to make awesome pixel art with Tempo's movement. It would have been nice if they had taken the time to make really smooth sprite-based bosses instead of the lifeless, pre-rendered stuff that just clashes with the rest of the game.

Tempo is one of my favourite 32x game and I just wish Sega gave us more back then

I think the main problem with Tempo for me is even without the 32X pretty much the whole game is there and the 32X primarily is used for the backgrounds and the bosses. Probably because most developers didn't have the time or resources to get used to the architecture. It's a shame too as in theory it could have done some impressive games but it really never should have been released to start with.

When I bought my 32X, Tempo was my favorite game. The colors, man. To me, It was gourgeous and put Mario, DK and Sonic to Shame. Back then, that was 32 bits for me. Back then, Have not seem anything that beautiful. Gameplay-wise, It was too hard for its own good. To this day, I have not played the Saturn sequel. Hard to make It work.

Conceptually I love it. A grasshopper in music themed platformer with a dancing butterfly that helps out? Awesome acid trip bro. It really is the backgrounds that kill it. Just from your footage some of the flying elements 'wait is that an enemy? a power up? Nah that's just background. The other big complaint is lack of any story. Even comic style stills along with music would help.

I was fortunate enough to have all these that I bought with my own money back in the day. Back in the day games had to be perfect now these days they get to have updates by the internet.

Looks cool. Backgrounds are too saturated, they need to be faded out, or have like some sort of alpha layer in front of them. That would be a nice option to toggle

Definitely overlooked game of that era. Had Sega released the 32X before the ill-fated Mega-CD, Sega could've still been a dominant force in console hardware now.

The fact that they had the mega/ Sega CD and the 32X and that both essentially failed equally is really incredible. And of course both those failures led among other things to have consumer trust lost on Sega that would lead to the domination of PlayStation and the absolute collapse of the Saturn in the US and everywhere else outside of Japan. Sadly neither add-on was really what Sega needed or was really thought out or well fleshed down as a product.

I never played Tempo on 32X till many years later. I was lucky to get a loose cart for $26, but that was a few years back. I like it for what it is. I also have Tempo Jr. I wish I could get Super Tempo, but not at the price that it's going for these days, sadly.

Good review. I have this game in my collection. I had no idea it was worth that much these days, as I got it out of a bargain bin back in the day. Don't think I paid more than $15 for it NIB. These days I usually play it via emulation because I don't like having all those wires around my Genesis.

4:55 @Sega Lord X it was visually stunning, but Astal and especially Rayman hadn’t been released when I bought my copy of Tempo (and Metal Head) in February of ‘95. As a mater of fact, I didn’t even see Astal in action until May 10, 1995 (the day I bought my Saturn) which at the time had only been released less than 2 weeks prior in Japan. (Had there been a way to play it on my US Saturn right then, I would have bought it along with Daytona and Panzer Dragoon). Rayman wouldn’t debut until September (a good 7 months after I bought Tempo). I was able to buy a copy for my PlayStation about 2 weeks after buying the console. A week later I bought the US version of Astal. By this time I had already owned Tempo for almost 8 months.

Maybe it's the 90s kid in me saying this, but I would love to see a new music based platformer that's about as funky as this one, even if it isn't an actual Tempo game! And no, ToeJam & Earl doesn't count because that's not a platformer, unless they somehow make a successor to Panic on Funkotron, but I wouldn't count on it.
