If all of this majesty and beauty, handed down from the beginning of time, can be erased and covered with cement in just fifty years, there will be nothing left in another fifty, anywhere.
Wow, unbelievable...this sure brings back a lot of memories. I was a young cadet at the army camp at the top of Mission Hill coming into Vernon from the south when this was taken and might even have been in one those army trucks! I moved to Vernon about 10 years later but it had already changed a lot by that time, especially the area south of 43rd Ave on highway 97 and almost all of 27th st. The roadsides now are just a series of chain restaurants and gas stations no different than anywhere else and the hillsides are paved with McMansions everywhere you look. Vernon is nothing, and I mean NOTHING like the quiet, peaceful place it used to be. I know that's true everywhere but that doesn't I have to like it. Having said that, it still beats the big city.
Tony W My understanding is that in the 1970s, a long term plan for the development of the city (known as "Plan Vernon") was drawn up. An important component of that plan was concentrating tourist-commercial development on the highway, with 27th Street intended as a buffer between the main residential and commercial zoned sections. It doesn't make for the most visually appealing highway and I'm sure it doesn't leave a favourable impression for those just barrelling through town (I've read at least one writer dismissing Vernon as a town of "gas stations and motels"), but it does make the western and eastern sides a bit more liveable. I've found that those tourists who have decided to go off the beaten path of 97 tend to be pretty impressed with how attractive much of the downtown area is.
+Colin Bailey Pretty interesting bit of video. I didntrealize that parts of Hwy 97 north of 34th was more residential, I hadto look at the video at spots and realize that there were more homes in that area, 39th and north, wonder when the plan was to get rid of them, were they demolished or just moved, I still see some old homes in the video that are there today, like that brink house besides Carls Jr and across 39th by the 7-11, hehe , :)
+The Random YT Channel When I was growing up in the Vernon area in the 70s, that residential section of 32nd Street north of 34th Avenue was on the decline. I'm guessing it was rezoned for commercial use at that point and houses got demolished as the properties got sold off to developers. One house may have been moved, but don't quote me on that. I also seem to recall a small cluster of post-WW2 style bungalows on 27th Street just north of 43rd Avenue that met similar fates.
great to see. lived in Vernon until I was 10 in 1967. We then moved to Rutland so a lot of this is so familiar. The Kelowna Zoo and of course the Drive In where we watched a lot of movies... The streets of Vernon were so familiar as well. The North End drive in cafe was a favourite hang out for my older teen brother. The big church at the corner across from Seaton High.. I enjoyed this.
i was 10 in 67 too . cant say i recognized much in the film , maybe going by the lake on the right before going down into vernon . up there last fall .
I can just about remember when most of that was still two-laned - amazing piece of video! Kudos to whomever in the Ministry went to the effort of putting this stuff up. Does anyone know why the MoT has these recordings in the first place? Is there a bigger archive of similar material out there?
We heard your feedback and have re-released our latest BC Road Trip Time Machine in its entirety at 20% of its original speed. Bring on the cool vintage car-spotting and old sign reading! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NqvHt2UllZk.html
What a shame that the Trans-Canada from Perry River to Golden hasn't been upgraded like highway 97. I suppose that the main heavy commercial vehicle route and tourist traffic route from BC to the rest of Canada isn't as important.
The 4 laning website doesn't upgrade the highway any faster than the 4 laning signs do. I expect you will be putting up new signs again just in time for next year''s election - just like you did for the last one. Meanwhile the glacial progress on the 'project' with no overall plan or timescale continues at a rate that might see it completed in time for the centenary of the highway's opening in 2062. No plans or prospect of upgrading many of the worst accident blackspots. I fully expect Christy Clark to make another commitment to funding that she will fall short on delivering on (remember $650m over 10 years?).
Can you believe we slowed this down to 25 percent of its original speed? If you would like to reduce the speed further, there is a gear icon on the bottom of the RU-vid screen which will give you options to further slow it down. Hope this helps.
