I was there at Expo '86 and the reason for the lack of wood, was that the buildings were meant to be temporary. Of course the people employed in the forest industry would have work, most were laid off at this point
Expo was amazing... After two failure fairs in Knoxville 1982 and New Orleans 1984, Vancouver exceeded expectations! This person interviewed is not an expert on anything but negativity.
Expo '86 was certainly hailed as being better than the previous two flops. But it did not enjoy the measure of success that the more imaginative Expo '67 achieved. The man being interviewed was one who had significant understanding of the venues of both Canadian fairs. He pointed out only a few key differences, possibly due to the limited time that he had on camera, but his commentary seems fair. As for him being an "expert" or not, that is highly subjective.
Knoxville's fair wasn't a flop, from what I understand. It broke even financially and was an amazing accomplishment for a city the size of Knoxville. I was there and enjoyed it. The fair in New Orleans, on the other hand....
Van Der Zalm was a crook no matter how you spin it, he used his cult of personality for his own gains. I would agree with you if they had better leadership or gotten rid of him past his expiry date.
expo 86....the beginning of the end for the average vancouverite....hong kong going back to china was the nail in the coffin....before this you could work and live in Vancouver...
expo would have actually worked as a fun event and nothing more except Vanderzalm took over and started the trend of selling out to China and destroyed the socred party while he was at it leaving us with the NDP and Liberals (the two most incompetent parties to ever gain power in a first world nation) to run BC into the ground She wasnt perfect but i think BC would be much better off had Grace McCarthy become premier rather than Vanderzalm and continued the legacy of building projects that benefited the people of BC rather than building ugly condos for the rich chinese
@@ggqbc My dad had the opportunity to talk with some former SoCred members from the Bill Bennett administraton and apparently the original goal of expo was to invite world industry to set up in BC (for example GM had a pavilion there) and hence why the expo revolved around technology showing all the achievements of BC off etc. They wanted to industrialize BC and move the economy beyond just resource extraction for example manufacturing and tech. The plan wasnt to invite corrupt real estate dealers here but it had the unfortunate consequence of putting vancouver on the radar and after hong kong was handed to red china and vanderzalm became leader instead of McCarthy and ran the socred party into the ground the seeds were sown for the current mess to start taking place in the 90s and ramp up to today. There were good intentions behind expo but as they say "the road to hell is paved with good intentions". The feds are to blame slightly too because BC doesnt control its own immigration. I dont really think an independent BC would have let in a bunch of corrupt hong kong billionaires. Not surprising after they show up the BCLib party gets a bunch of funding out of nowhere The olympics had no good intentions. It was just Campbell kissing federal ass and making real estate developers a profit at the expense of ordinary BCers. I really wish someone had actually followed through on their threats to assassinate that guy the premier before him and the 2 after him are just idiots but he opened the door fully to corruption knowing full well what he was doing.
@@roquefortfiles In my opinion the world has far overstayed its invitation. They were supposed to be just guests but they just waltzed in took over the place and demanded we change for them. Foreign real estate ownership should be banned and we should make an english version of quebecs language charter for good measure.
@@P7777-u7r What are you going to do when people show up with 20 million dollars and then buy houses basically for cash. And then all the rest of their friends do the same thing X 1000. Driving up the price of real estate. The average joe can't compete. We created this nightmare by inviting the world. I just don't like how it is becoming a city of people who don't live here. We're being played like a chump in an international Grifters game. Cheap real estate to park your money in. Live there? maybe. Get my son to do it. Nobody wants to talk about it but it is the truth.
He has been at Global BC for more than three decades, albeit scaled back to two weekdays as Anchorman. Originally he was going to retire after the 2010 Winter Olympics but suddenly announced he was stepping down Dec.15 and did his last broadcast at Global BC yesterday, Dec.16. It has been reported he'll be showing up at Victoria's CHEK 6 beginning in March.
This idiot has no clue what he is talking about, I enjoyed the fair immensely every time I attended, probably a case of sour grapes just like the Olympics
Dont worry BC will bounce back we have always bounced back. In 1952 it was a similar situation (sans chinese foreign agents but it was American agents at the time) people at the time said that BC would never in a hundred years be more than a little backwater on the edge of the world useful for only lumber production and that year was the beginning of the most underrated modernization and economic improvement in history and it was done without a shot being fired or any purges or any famines the way so many other places in the world did it and that is probably why the socred revolution is the most forgotten in history it happened by the ballot nobody died nobody starved nobody fought but it was a revolution in the true sense of the term.
@garycalgary - Wow. You're upset by someone who made comments a couple decades ago plus. Resentment issues? He had some very good points anyway. Vancouver has some amazing wood architecture and that wasn't showcased at Expo at all. I noticed that you have "calgary" in your name. And isn't the whole point here how people looked back then? It's funny.
