Hi Mike, I really enjoyed your two videos interviewing Elspeth Beard. What a wonderfully brave, inspiring and interesting lady she is. Looking at her pictures you forget just how grainy film images can be. With today's digital ISO ability, images can be so refined that they tend to lose some of the character and authenticity of the moment. I shall certainly be looking to get hold of her book, Lone Rider. Many thanks for the great content and helping to give us all much-needed inspiration.
No puzzle, photography is more about emotions, yes feelings than anything else. Thank God we are all different, but at times so alike. Albeit I am a bit older than Mike also as a photographer, I do like to listen to him from time to time. I'll stop ranting, but I have mainly gone back to my beloved Pentax and just occasionally use my Fuji's. Why, because the pentaprism mirror is to me, much more fulfilling. With DSLRs you got to know what you're doing, wth mirrorless on the other hand......you see what you're doing.😀

Oh those lost films! I'm not sure I would have been brave or astute enough to go looking for them the way Elspeth did. But I sure would have had a certain kind "lost children" feel to it. A great conversation to listen in on. Really appreciating them.
Wow Mike, what a fascinating talk with Elspeth Beard and her adventures all those many years ago, I wished that I had done some more travel back in my younger days. I had always be interested in Photography and had dabbled in it numerous times in my life and the very first SLR I ever bought was that very same Pentax K1000 that I bought in Fiji,, it was such a simple camera to use even though I knew little about that I was doing but as long as I had that light meter in the middle and it was in focus, I took some great photos even surprising myself at times.

Very nostalgic interview i remember when shooting with film the excitement i had when waiting for those prints to be developed it was a great experience. Great point Elspeth made when she said YOU VALUED EVERY PICTURE , so true. You are so right Mike about the marketing BS, those extra 10 features are useless, probably only 3 of them will be useful. Great to see the Pentax K1000 and the sound of the Shutter click, i agree it sounds awesome. Thanks for this interview. 😃
Very interesting Mike, I owned a Pentax SP1000 and remember it fondly. I was brought up shooting film and had to be dragged screaming and kicking into the digital age, having resisted for as long as possible. However now I wouldn't want to go back to film although I do miss the darkroom craft side of things. There seems to be a bit of a theme on RU-vid to persuade people to shoot film but I can't help feeling that this only appeals to those who have been brought up on digital and not for for old hands like me to return to it.
@paulmoss4199 - I was similar and for years held the thought of shooting B&W film and printing myself as before. But never have and wouldn't want to any more. Film had great benefits because of it's restrictions, like thinking about a shot rather than spraying and praying. But no way I'd go back to it now because digital post production is so much easier and less messy that it was in the dark room...

Hi Mike, I watched your full interview with Elspeth it is truly inspirational. I've finished your fantastic masterclass and treated myself to a Canon AV-1 one of the reasons for buying this was touched upon in this interview. And this is to slow down when composing a shot thinking about aperture and everything that goes with it, after all, this has to be good in the camera or you're wasting money. I have not done a review on Trust Pilot but I'll get it done this weekend.
I have dug out my old film camera and will shoot some and compare to the digital. I so loved this interview which really helped with the perspective on film vs digital!
I am, at best, a serious amateur. However, my parents bought me a Yashica J coupled range finder film camera in 1966 along with a couple of Kodak slide films (I was 16). Most of my friends took B&W then because it was the cheapest form of photography. In fact, I seem to remember it cost more for 36 colour prints (film and printing) than 36 colour slides. I never 'got' B&W so I stayed with colour slides. That is until 1990 when I decided prints were far cheaper now, more convenient and what better way to bring in the new decade than to drop slides and start taking prints. It lasted 6 months. I could not understand why my pictures were so 'average'. Then the penny dropped. Because prints were so much cheaper I was taking less care on what I took and how I composed the shots etc. I reverted to slides and continued with these until 2007 when I went Digital. So I completely get the message of the video. Fortunately digital doesn't cost you a penny so you can take dozens of shots to get that right one. Not sure it makes you a better photographer but that's another debate.
Hey Mike have you ever been offered work in cinematography for short films or large feature projects? You have a way of describing light and how it interacts that would lend itself to the cinematography world.
