My personal theory is that Tassadar (and the Dark Templars) didn't knew back then that you NEED Void energy to permanently destroy a Cerebrate. They managed to assassinate one on Char and they thought "Oh, we just need to kill them and it will work". It's only after the failure of that mission that they learned that conventional means didn't worked against them.

So I thought about this because someone else asked a similar question below. This is a plot hole. Copy pasta: When Zasz was assassinated by Zeratul, the Garm brood became erratic and lost all control, while the Overmind itself was psychically damaged and had to "radio silent" to recover, leaving the remaining cerebrates without their master. If Tassadar and Zeratul together slew a cerebrate on Char and had the same results, the Overmind would have been assaulted once before. This couldn't have happened, because Zasz's permanent death and the Overmind's response were a shock to the Zerg Hive cluster. It was also chronologically impossible, because the Overmind hadn't yet landed on Aiur when Zasz was killed. The only way Tassadar would have given the advice he did would have been if he and the Dark Templar had slain a cerebrate on Char without void energies (or it wasn't killed directly by the Dark Templar). It would have been temporarily destroyed, and the Protoss would not have seen it regenerate. So when Tassadar advised the Executor, Fenix, and Aldaris to eliminate the Baelrog brood's cerebrate, he had no idea that would happen.

It does, it just doesn't work whilst the Overmind lives.

@@dragonstormstudios8871 I don't see it as a plot hole at all. I see no reason why Tassadar and Zeratul would have had to slay any cerebrate other than Zasz prior to the invasion of Aiur. Tassadar giving his advice makes sense if no one knew that the Dark Templar's void energies were needed to kill a cerebrate until the failure to kill this particular one on Aiur. After seeing that attack fail, Tassadar and Zeratul realized (somehow) that the reason this attempt failed but their previous attack against Zasz succeeded was because of the type of energy being used. So, I don't see any kind of chronological problem. The closest thing I see to a plot hole here is that Tassadar and Zeratul were able to determine that the lack of void energies used in the attack was the one factor, out of so many that were different between the attack on Zasz and the attack on this cerebrate on Aiur, that determined the success or failure of the attack. Then again, I can chalk that up to some sort of hand-waving about the Protoss being able to directly sense the energies somehow and figure it out from there. After all, Zeratul _did_ gain some unique insight from touching the Overmind during the killing of Zasz.

As much of a Tassadar fan as I am, it was quite stupid of him to not tell Aldaris that you need void energies to destroy cerebrates. He effectively sends him on a wild goose chase and then he's shocked when Aldaris doesn't trust him anymore.
@stephenwood6663
@stephenwood6663 2 года назад
Heck, *I* found it difficult to trust him after this. I didn't have an easy time with this mission on my first playthrough, so my reaction to his "Unfortunately, yes. Your attack on the Cerebrate failed because the energies that you wield are useless when used directly against the Overmind and its Cerebrates." was something along the lines of "Unfortunately? Unfortunately? Dozens of brave Protoss warriors died following your flawed intel, and all you can say is that it was unfortunate?"
@CallinWire

I guess Aldaris learned this tactic from Tassadar when he started a rebellion but kept quiet about his Razsagal suspicions.
@NoFrameHell
@NoFrameHell 2 года назад
You have to take note that the Conclave scorn dark templars, even framing them as heretics! So giving this information beforehand wouldn't help a tad. Also, Tassadar only came to know about killing cerebrates with void energy because he got stranded on Char where he met Zeratul, which taught Tassadar how to move between shadows and voice energy manipulation for a few months, meeting Jim Raynor a little later (It was covered in a novel called StarCraft: Queen of Blades).
@agiar2000
@agiar2000 2 года назад
I always figured that no one knew that void energies were needed to kill a cerebrate until after this attack failed. Then, sensing the difference in what happened, Tassadar and Zeratul figured out why it went wrong and reported it.

I always thought it was obvious that Tassadar and Zeratul simply didn't _know_ that you needed void energy to kill a cerebrate until they saw here on Aiur that damaging a cerebrate _without_ those energies allowed it to recover, because they had never _tried_ attacking a cerebrate _without_ void energy before. Reading the comments here, it seems that it wasn't nearly as obvious as I had thought.

Dude, indeed, I'm glad I'm not the only one. Honestly, the dialogue are so rich...so much passion in the project. They did their best with the technology at the time too...with limited character animation and resolution...with less mainstream audio editing equipment and software. My god, just how did they managed to create such excellent works is beyond me. Nowadays, I don't understand why there's no soul to anything anymore. Creators have so much more supports now than they could hope for at the time. Do people nowadays just can't understand sci-fi? Sci-fi as a genre is not just "bright led laser, glowing ships, or bugs looking creatures".
