When I first sat down at a piano at 49 with a bass player from a rock band and he showed me "middle C", it was daunting and awkward. I did eight lessons in total with him, bombed a recital, took workbooks home....and ten years later I just uploaded a decent original piece on my channel. Oh ya - all while....I was learning guitar concurrently while maintaining life's responsibilities. You can do it but you must feed your inspiration regularly, omit negative self talk, and put others' perspectives into perspective. You can't get overwhelmed. You simply need to be patient and persistent.

I'm very old and learning 4th year without any teacher - thanks for this channel! From my experience all that really matters are major scales and the rest are "hacks" to make them sounding better given specific chord. Ability to play all diatonic chords is fundamental and this needs to be followed by learning proper voice leading. And yes, rhytm is even more fundamental. And even more fundamental is effort we put into learning language of music.
Great video...was wondering if you could give me some advice. I have cerebral palsy and can only use 7 fingers independently and my right hand is more limited than my left and I am left handed. I played a little piano when I was 10 years old and I have made the decision to try and learn again 30 years later. I know there are arrangements that are made to be able to be played with one hand...do you think I am better off learning those and just enjoying what I can, or should I record the bass notes and then play it back to accompany myself and play the melody with my left hand...or do I play with 7 fingers at a slower tempo and just use non tradiotional finger positioning? I am not looking to be an expert but simply just enjoy piano. Any beginning advice is appreciated!
Wow that’s amazing that you want to play piano even though it’s difficult the traditional way. I’ve taught two students with cerebral palsy and had to gear the lessons to their needs. I think playing something when you can’t or is too hard/slow is a way to end up resenting the piano. I think you should do whatever you feel is fun. Whether that’s playing with just one hand or recording the left hand. I hope you enjoy the journey. Piano is an incredible instrument to play. Let me know if you have any questions!
