If I submit a work of writing talking about common knowledge, for instance, George Washington was the first President, would I still have to cite my sources?

This is really helpful, thank you! One question I had, was; if I saw a silent film, or music video, and wrote a story or poem based on my own interpretation of the unspoken meaning, would that be disqualified?

Y'know, I think I'll count that as a practice, just in case. I wanna make something totally original.
