she actually was considered for the part of Ursula but she had to turn it down because she was working on Golden Girls at the time. I always thought Bea would have made a great Disney Villain too, she has everything the voice, the elegance and the sarcasm.
allthatjazzspaz95 me too! I think I just wet my blue pant suit. 💁♂️ God love her. That poor conductor probably changed jobs to a soprano after she got hold of him! 🤣
Such an amazing share! Thank you so much! Maybe not her best vocals, but above all she is a performer and she did so well. Full of Bea-Sass as DivaBehavior said and cue-stepping aside, so great!
I personally love it! Yes it was too fast, yes it was kinda off beat and yes the conductor should have been sacked but all of those things contribute to this being an extremely unique performance. R.I.P Bea Arthur 😔
Bea Arthur and Pat Carroll have VERY similar voices to either one would have been perfect to play Ursula. I love both of those women. and I can imitate them too.
Only Bea could take one of Barbra's signature songs and literally make it her own. 30 something years later at the Tonys, Lea Michele has just performed this. I think Lea is a wonderful singer who will be on stage/screen for years but I just love this Bea-Sass version. Lea was just trying and stretching too hard for the Barbra phrasing IMO and when you do that, your always going to coming (a close) second best. Bea wisely did her own thing with it. RIP Bea - one of the greats in many fields!
Thank you for the information! It would certainly be an interesting thing, wouldn't it? But I couldn't imagine someone other than Pat Carroll to voice Ursula, especially someone who played Maude and Dorothy XD
I love everything Bea has ever done...except for this. She's not even trying, she flubbed a few of the lyrics, and though she's a powerful singer, she just doesn't have the vocal capacity to pull this one off. True, that conductor should have been strung UP for cutting her off and the timing of the mudic was all out of whack...but honestly, WHO decided she should sing this song to begin with?
I know but old people singing and dancing is my idea of great entertainment and if they can tell a joke without mangling the punch line, I think they're comic geniuses.
